ADVERBS
RULE 1.- Adverbs modify verbs. They tell you How something is done. That is you describe
the VERB.
Example: - She sings beautifully. (How does he she sing? --- BEAUTIFULLY )
RULE 2.- Adverbs can also modify an adjective. The collocation of the adverb is before the
adjective.
Example: He is very rich. Adverb of negree: very + Adjective rich
RULE 3.- Some adjectives don't change in the adverb form such as: fast - fast, hard - hard
RULE 3.- The adverb form of 'good' is 'well'.

MORE ADVERBS
These adverbs are easy to use and to identify. We know them as WH-words and we use them to find out
details or more information by asking questions.

Interrogative Adverbs which are used for asking questions are called interrogative adverbs.

Interrogative Adverbs of Time are: when, how long, how early, how soon etc.
When will you go back home? How long does it take you to do your
fitness routine?
How often do you exercise? How soon can he start playing again?

Interrogative adverbs of Place: where


Where do you g oto school? Where has she come from? Where can I get some
fresh vegies?

Interrogative adverbs of Lumber are: how many, how often, how much
How many students are there in the class? How often do you have tests? How much
Money do you need?

Interrogative adverb of manner: how


How did you do this? Its beautiful! How are you doing? How was the food?

Interrogative adverbs of degree or quantity: how much, how far, how high etc.
How much did you pay for these earings? How long is this road? How much more
do you want?

Interrogative adverbs of reason: why


Why are you so upset? Why did you stay after school? Why are you calling her
for?

EXERCISE 4.- Read the question and complete using a WH- word

- Relative Adverb: when, where, how, why


These words are the same in form as Interrogative Adverbs; but they are used in the sentence to link
or connect events or a sequence of events. Eg.

When she arrived home she found everything out of place.


The school was built where the old park used to be.
He is the doctor who help us in the emergency room.
Nobody understands why she gota ll upset.

FUNCTIONS OF ADVERBS

Adverbs can Modify the NOUN, an ADJECTIVE or a VERB. Eg

The lighting shone strongly last night


lightning (noun) How did it shone STRONGLY (adverb)

My mom cooks well but my grandmother cooks deliciously.

cook (verb) How does she cook? WELL (adverb )

This pants are too short for me


short (adjective) How do the pants fit? TOO (short ) adverb
