is gearing up and ready for

Wear for A Fancy Affair-
Gowns for Girls& Ties for
Guys. The one day event is
scheduled for Saturday April
22nd at 1pm at Plymouth
State University in The
Hartman Union Building.
Students are encouraged to
attend the event to acquire

The Frost Place
Celebrates 40 Years
The Frost Place will cele-
brate its 40th anniversary
July 21- 23, 2017, with a
series of poetry readings and
community events. This
summer also marks the cen-
tennial of the time Robert
Frost lived with his family in
the 19th- century farmhouse
on Ridge Road in Franconia.
The weekend-long celebra-

i.e., saving the few refugees
who come here, and use our
limited resources to maxi-
mize the number of strug-
gling/threatened people that
can be fed and/or moved to
safe areas among people
who share their language
and culture. Thats better
for us and better for them.

For the Love of my
Horse.
Horses are very sensitive and
intuitive creatures. I believe
that we can all learn a lot
from them. One of the
biggest lessons my horses
have taught me is the impor-
tance of unconditional love.
Animals dont set rules or
laws like people do, and they
live life in the present.
Horses dont spend time
worrying because they know
that this will lead to an
imbalance of their energy
field. By keeping in balance,
they have a tremendous pos-
itive influence on everyone
that comes in contact with
them. I believe that a horse
can instinctively tune into a
persons thoughts and even
sense their state of mind.
Spending time with horses
can be very rewarding and
have lasting benefits.
Relationships with horses
can lead to truly amazing
results and sometimes border
on miracles, as I have per-
sonally experienced.

Thirteen years ago, my beau-
tiful grey Arabian mare
became part of my life. Back
then, I didnt know that my
experience with this horse
would change my life forev-
er. When she arrived on our
farm, she was very ill. Her
previous owners never told
me that she was very sick.
After frustrating veterinarian
visits, it was determined that
my new horse had many
health problems including
severe malnutrition and a
fractured hip. To my despair,
I was told that the fracture
would never heal. My veteri-
narian told me that I would
never be able to ride this
horse. He recommended
sending her back to the pre-
vious owner. I contemplated
what to do and how I could
possibly help this horse heal.
I knew my chances of help-
ing her were very slim and I
had made the decision to
send her back to the previous
owner. Recently, I had
learned that studies reveal
horses with fractured hips
have a very low recovery
rate.
That night I had a dream. In
my dream, I saw my horse
walk away from me. I could
clearly see her beautiful tail
flow gracefully in the sum-
mer breeze. As I watched her
walk away, she suddenly
stopped and turned her head
toward me. I understood her
to say how deeply disap-
pointed she was that I had
given up on her. She told me
that everyone had done the
same in the past, and that she
never expected me to give up
on her too. She then slowly
turned away and gave me the
saddest look I have ever
seen. At that time, I woke up
from my dream and I knew
that no matter what could
happen to this horse, I would
not give up on her. I
believed, from that moment
on, that she would heal
again. Our love for each
other would show us the way
to her recovery. I told her
that someday, when she was
healthy enough; we would
canter together through open
fields. It was this deep love
and commitment for each
other that changed my
horses course of illness.
One year later, and after
many months of physical
therapy, my horse and I can-
tered for the first time
through lush green meadows.
Since her full recovery, we
had many wonderful years of
riding together. I believe that
it was no accident that my
horse and I meet. Together,
we traveled a long road of
recovery. Because of this
experience, a deep bond
formed between us which
could never be broken. It was
unconditional love that
helped us see through these
times of hardship and sor-
row. I had pledged to never
give up on her.
Today, my beautiful grey
Arabian mare is twenty-eight
years old. She is even more
beautiful than when she first exemplary, and truly
arrived on our farm. I never embodies the spirit of

In the northern forest of New
England, a big gray cat
crouches silently in a dense
thicket of fir along a snow-
shoe hare run. Its pointed
ears, topped with long tufts
closely tied to their favorite
prey that their populations
fluctuate with the peaks and
lows in snowshoe hare popu-
lations. Lynx also eat squir-
rels, grouse, and other prey,
as well as carrion, and their
diet tends to vary more in
summer, when eggs and fish
may be part of the menu.
Lynx entered New England
from Quebec beginning in
the 1990s, and especially in
the early 2000s, when lynx
populations in the Gasp
Region were high. These dis-
persing lynx crossed the bor-
der into Maine, where they
boosted a small remaining
population and benefitted
from extensive areas of
regenerating spruce-fir for-
est, following the spruce
budworm outbreak in the
1970s. This young forest
supports high densities of
snowshoe hares.
By 2006, state biologists
estimated there were 750 to
1000 adult lynx in Maine. As
this population grew, some
lynx ventured southwest. By
enough snowshoe hares to
support a breeding popula-
tion, but the state and federal
partners have recently
installed remote cameras
throughout the Greens, and
in prime habitat in the
Northeast Kingdom to moni-
tor for lynx. Kilborn believes
there is a small breeding
population in the northern tip
of New Hampshire. Bernier
said there was evidence of
reproduction for a few years,
but except for the lynx sight-
ings in southern Vermont last
year, lynx have not been
detected in the state since
2014.
Whether lynx survive in
New England will depend on
the continued existence of
large blocks of forests con-
necting our states to lynx
populations in Quebec and
New Brunswick, explained

The Canada lynx, once elim-
inated from most of New
England by forest clearing
and unsustainable hunting
and trapping, is making a
comeback. Though still list-
ed as a federally threatened
species, there is an expand-
ing breeding population in
northern and western Maine,
smaller numbers of lynx in
northern New Hampshire,
and intermittently, cats have
been found in Vermont.
The lynx is a creature of the
boreal forest, that broad
swath of conifers stretching
the width of Canada.
Northern New England is at
the southern edge of its
range. This snow cat special-
izes in hunting snowshoe
hares, which make up over
75% of its winter diet. A lynx
will consume one to two
hares per day. Lynx are so
said the tracks in the moun-
tains are probably from lynx
wandering far afield during
breeding season, but the
White Mountain National
Forest was once a stronghold
for lynx. The state is work-
ing with the Northeast
Climate Science Center at
the University of
Massachusetts Amherst to
study whether its high-eleva-
tion spruce-fir forests have
enough snowshoe hares to
support lynx.
Vermont had its first record
of lynx in 2003 and there
have been 14 confirmed citi-
zen sightings of the cats or
their tracks since then. A
lynx was photographed
twice in southern Vermont
last summer. Chris Bernier,
wildlife biologist with the
Vermont Fish and Wildlife
Department, explained this
was likely a yearling male
searching for new territory;
dispersing lynx have been
known to travel up to 500
miles. He doesnt believe the
