Walking thru the mall

Walking thru the mall and describing this as if it is an artpiece. This is what I do
because I am applying for an internship at artforum in summer of 2017. The mall
near my house on april the twenty-fifth, in the morning before the stores open. So
many people, persons past their prime who walk to stay fit and make it past 100 in
one fit and perfect piece, very prim and proper salesladies and salesgentlemen, the
latter ones in outfits that scream hipster or drummer, I am just in this till my big
break, and persons like yours truly who just tries to kill time till nine thirty so that
she can park on the island where the art school still is before it will move to the new
finning place in September.
It is an art piece, this place, it has it all, performance art and architecture, sound
installation and nail art. The mall as art piece or as anti-art, whatever your
inclination is. This is where it all happens, this is where lo-brow meets hi-brow.
Where politics is happening. George Carlin, the late George Carlin described
America as one big mall, with smaller malls in between and people in houses in the
places where there is no mall. Obviously I am paraphrasing here, he managed to be
way more coherent in his critique of malls and the public perception slash
interaction with malls. We heard there is a mall, that is what people say when they
are asked why they came to America. Forget about oppression et. al., America is
one big mall and that is why it is on peoples mind.
Malls, either fascinating or despicable, whatever your inclination is, but I said that
already and the idea is not to repeat one half-naked notion till the cows come home.
Walking thru the mall, I typed this into my i-phone before I had a Canadian maple
donut at the tim hortons in the corner of oakridge here. And I notice that I am not
describing an American mall or a Canadian mall per se, more an anymall, a global
mall. Yup, make it an artpiece, that is what it is just like the city is, any urban
environment the world over, any amalgamation of concrete and stones, something
manmade, yup, that kind of stuff. And it is definitely filled with stuff.
I obviously notice that I am all over the place with this piece but I hope that I will be
able to refine my writing and learn how to focus while I intern at your magazine.
Thank you.
