Lesson
The children are going to learn about specific plants in the classroom. They will

receive a booklet with QR codes and pictures associated with them. When they
scan the QR code it will take them to a website about that specific plant. With this
booklet they will walk outdoors and learn about plants they see.

How will the learning environment be set up?

The classroom: Desk learning using the smart board.
The outdoors: A path will be established, taking the children by all the plants that we would
like to introduce them to.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1: Introduction to Plants

The first 15 minutes of the class will start by introducing the subject of plants and will discuss
their current knowledge of plants. Each student will be asked what their favorite plant is and
what makes it special to them. As a class, students will be come up with a list of qualities that
makes plants unique. This list will be put on the smart board and will be pulled up in future
lessons and the class will add to it. The remaining 15 minutes will be spent un groups in which
students will use the tablets to draw their idea of plants. They will discuss their pictures as a
group.
Day 2: Parts of a Plant
During the first 20 minutes of the class period, teacher will utilize the smart board to interact
with the class. With the children seated on the floor, pictures and materials will be brought up on
the smart board to teach the class on the different parts of the plant. During the last 10 minutes
of the class period, the same figure of a plant will be brought up without labels, allowing the
students to verbally identify each part of the plant.
Day 3: Introduction to QR Codes
The class will be introduced to QR codes using their tablets. To do this, the first 10 minutes will
be used to teach the concept of QR codes to the children. In the remainder of the class time, the
children will explore QR codes placed around the classroom. The QR codes will take the children
to websites on plants and other items in the classroom that the QR code is placed in front of.
Day 4: Indoor QR Code Play and Learn
QR codes and the parts of the plant will be mixed in this class. Using the tablets, QR codes will
take the students to a website where they can label the different parts of the plant (learned in
Day 2). This mixture will cement the learning of both QR codes and the different part of the
plant.
Day 5: Outdoor QR Code Play and Learn
At the beginning of the class, the children are each given a booklet containing 8-10 QR codes
linked to different pictures of plants that can be found in the playground area. Armed with their
booklet and tablet, students will spend the next 20 minutes scanning the QR codes and finding
the plant that is associated with the code. As the children find the plants using this method they
will take a picture of the plant using the tablet. The last 5 minutes of the class will be spent
gathering the tablets and booklet, and discussing the similarities and differences of the plants
that they found.

Extension
As an extension to the lesson, the students can go to Turtle Diary to interactively learn about
plants by labeling the different parts of the plant. Other learning resources are also available on
the site to dive in deeper on other subjects concerning plants. This will benefit the students by
offering a fun and exciting tool to help learn though games.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated

(changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: Addition material can
be added to the lesson for accelerated students, teaching them about more advanced subjects.
This may include: photosynthesis, plant families, life cycle of a plant, etc. Youtube videos and
other websites can be used to teach these subjects.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling
with the material:
The use of only websites using the tablet (removing the use of QR codes) could allow the
students struggling with the material to more quickly understand the material without having to
learn how to use QR codes.

For teachers The teacher will need a smart board to pull up pictures and other resources about
the plants. The teacher will also need to create QR booklet with 8-10 links to
plants for the plant scavenger hunt. A tablet will be used for documentation of
learning.
For students Students will need a journal to write down their ideas and thoughts about plants.
They will also need a tablet to scan QR codes, draw, and take pictures.
