Chapter 14

Of Saving Faith

1. The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of
their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts,

II Corinthians We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and
4:13 therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
II Corinthians Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus,
4:14 and shall present us with you.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word;

Romans How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they
10:14 believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a
preacher?
Romans And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are
10:15 the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good
things!
Romans But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed
10:16 our report?
Romans So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
10:17

by which also, and by the administration of baptism and the Lord's Supper, prayer
and other means appointed of God, it is increased, and strengthened.

Luke 17:5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
I Peter Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all
2:1 evil speakings,
I Peter As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
2:2
I Peter If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
2:3

Acts And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able
20:32 to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

2. By this faith, a Christian believeth to be true whatsoever is revealed in the

Word for the authority of God Himself;

Acts But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the
24:14 God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
Acts And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a
24:15 resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

and also apprehendeth an excellency therein above all other writings and all things in
the world:

Psalm The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is
19:7 sure, making wise the simple.
Psalm The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the
19:8 LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psalm The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true
19:9 and righteous altogether.
Psalm More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than
19:10 honey and the honeycomb.

Psalm The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
119:72

as it bears forth the glory of God in His attributes, the excellency of Christ in His
nature and offices, and the power and fullness of the Holy Spirit in His workings and
operations; and so is enabled to cast his soul upon the truth thus believed,
II Timothy For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I
1:12 know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I
have committed unto him against that day.

and also acteth differently upon that which each particular passage thereof
containeth; yielding obedience to the commands,

John This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
15:12
John Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
15:13
John Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15:14
John Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but
15:15 I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made
known unto you.

trembling at the threatenings,

Isaiah Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is
66:1 the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
Isaiah For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the
66:2 LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and
trembleth at my word.

and embracing the promises of God, for this life, and that which is to come;

Hebrews These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar
11:13 off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

but the principle acts of saving faith, hath immediate relation to Christ, accepting,
receiving, and resting upon Him alone, for justification, sanctification, and eternal
life, by virtue of the covenant of grace.
John But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even
1:12 to them that believe on his name:
John Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but
1:13 of God.

Acts And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy
16:31 house.

Galatians I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and
2:20 the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved
me, and gave himself for me.

Acts 15:11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even
as they.

3. This faith, although it be different in degrees, and may be weak, or strong,

Hebrews For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a
5:13 babe.
Hebrews But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of
5:14 use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Matthew Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is
6:30 cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Romans And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was
4:19 about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
Romans He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith,
4:20 giving glory to God;
Romans And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
4:21
yet it is in the least degree of it, different in the kind, or nature of it, (as is all other
saving grace) from the faith and common grace of temporary believers;

II Peter Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like
1:1 precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
II Peter Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus
1:2 our Lord,
II Peter According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and
1:3 godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
II Peter Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye
1:4 might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the
world through lust.

and therefore, although it may be many times assailed and weakened, yet it gets the
victory,

Ephesians Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the
6:14 breastplate of righteousness;
Ephesians And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
6:15
Ephesians Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the
6:16 fiery darts of the wicked.

I John For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that
5:4 overcometh the world, even our faith.
I John Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of
5:5 God?

growing up in many, to the attainment of a full assurance through Christ

Hebrews And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full
6:11 assurance of hope unto the end:
Hebrews That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience
6:12 inherit the promises.

Colossians For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at
2:1 Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
Colossians That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches
2:2 of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of
God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
Colossians In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
2:3

who is both the author and finisher of our faith.

Hebrews Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let
12:1 us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run
with patience the race that is set before us,
Hebrews Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set
12:2 before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand
of the throne of God.
