CE I1700 Finite Element Methods in Engineering

Project

Spring 2017

Modify the given finite element program to include the linear-strain triangular element and redo
Homework 9 using this added triangular element. Compare the numerical results with those
obtained from the quadrilateral element to verify your modifications.

Note:

1. The project is due on the last lecture of this class.

2. E-mail the modified source program, input data file, and project report file to me at
flin@ccny.cuny.edu by the due date. Type CE I1700 Project Your Name in the subject
field of your e-mail.

3. Also hand in a typed hardcopy project report by the due date. The report should at least
include (a) your thinking and explanation in solving the problem, (b) figures of your finite
element meshes showing nodal numbers and element numbers, (c) computer printouts of
your input data, output results, and the source program with your modifications
highlighted, and (d) your comments and discussions.

4. You should organize your report according to the following general guidelines:
a. Cover page: Giving title, name, and date, etc.
b. Table of Contents: Listing the sections and figures.
c. Abstract: Summarizing the report including important findings.
d. Introduction: Describing the importance of the work done.
e. Procedure and Results: Including figures and/or tables.
f. Discussion of Results: Giving a thorough analysis and interpretation of results.
g. Conclusions: Giving a summary of the findings.
h. Appendix: Showing important calculations and formulas.
Figures and tables should be numbered and must have captions explaining what the figures
and tables are illustrating. You must always show units of axes for figures and the units for
the numbers listed in the tables.
