Lesson Content Description:
Students will use prior knowledge of details learned through science lessons to create a 5
sentence paragraph about the moon (topic sentence, 3 detail sentences, and a conclusion).
Common Core Standard:
1.W.2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts
about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
NGSS Standard:
1.ESS.1 Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be
predicted.
Common Core Lesson Objective:
SWBAT write a 5 sentence paragraph about the moon that includes a topic sentence, 3
details, and a conclusion sentence.

Teacher reviews anchor charts about the moon and phases of the moon.

THROUGH

Class brainstorms ideas about details they could include in their moon writing.
Teacher creates list on the board from student suggestions.
Teacher shows T-chart with green topic/conclusion and yellow star details color
coded.
Teacher prompts students to advise what should be included in topic and
conclusion on t-chart, ensuring to remind students that we can use caveman
language on the t-chart but not on their writing paper.
Complete t-chart as a class using student participation for yellow star details.
Create a short list of possible topic and conclusion sentences for students.
Partner share about the types of sentences they will have and how many total
sentences will be on their writing paper.

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students Performance


Students complete T-chart
Students complete 5 sentence paragraph with a topic sentence, 3 detail
sentences, and a conclusion sentence.
Teacher circulates to check for understanding, complete sentences and proper
