About Cosmology Club of DTU

Cosmology Club of Delhi Technological University is a dynamic

organization of vibrant DTU students supported by Ph.D. scholars,
Amateur Astronomers, and guided by the Faculty Advisor, which aims
to explore in the field of Astronomy, Cosmology and art of reasoning in
science domain.
Currently operating successfully in Delhi Technological University
under the guidance of Applied Physics Department, Cosmology Club
of DTU offers three courses under the name COSMOS 1.0, COSMOS
2.0 and COSMOS 3.0
This series of Courses provide students with enough knowledge and
passion to pursue higher education in the Astrophysics or Theoretical
Physics.
School Programs

The School Programs are unique models that develop skills in Astronomy and
Space Sciences through a curriculum based academic educational program,
accompanied by workshops, outreach events, competitions, trips and projects.
Cosmology Club offers three Programs for School Students: COSMOS 1.0 ,
COSMOS 2.0 and COSMOS 3.0

The Club is focused on making School Students realize the importance of

Astronomy and Space Science and pursue career in these fields by
developing thinking skills.
Within these Programs, Students will be participating in various events like
International Asteroid Search Campaign, Sally Ride EarthKam, Night Sky
Observation, Solar Observation, Planetarium Visit, and many more activities
like Astrophotography.
ASTRONOMY IN MY BACKYARD is a beginner level
Program for young Astronomy Enthusiast. This
Program introduces students to the basic concepts of
Astronomy that affects our day to day life, nature and
surroundings, introduced through various hands-on
learning activities. The students will be amazed to see
the beauty of nature along with secrets it holds.

The Program is designed for students from 6th class

onwards.

The Program consists of 42 hours sessions covered in

11 to 12 days during the academic year. It includes one
Solar Observation in School Campus and an overnight
observation at one of the observational site. Minimum
Strength to start this program is 30 students.

SAILING THE COSMOS is an Advanced level Program for students having
basic knowledge of Astronomy or has taken COSMOS 2.0 course. This
course is an introduction to the modern extragalactic Astronomy and
Cosmology, the part of Astrophysics that deals with the evolution of the
universe as a whole, and its major constituents. While taking this course,
students will be on a roller coaster ride sailing through the Cosmos.

The Program is designed for students from 8th class onwards.

The Program consists of 42 hours sessions covered in 10 to 11

days during the academic year. It includes Astrophotography
session, an overnight observation and a solar observation along
with practicing higher level Astronomy Skills. Minimum Strength
required to start Cosmos 3.0 is 30.

Sally Ride EarthKam Project Planetarium Visits
Sally Ride EarthKAM (Earth Knowledge Acquired Visit to Nehru Planetarium
By Middle school students) is a NASA educational
Outreach program that enables students, teachers,
And the public to learn about Earth from the unique
Perspective of space.

IASC
(International Asteroid Search Campaign)
The International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) is an educational outreach program for
high schools and colleges. It provides high quality astronomical data to students around the world.

Parallel with Syllabus:

Students joining the programs will not be burdened. There will be synchronization.

Students will enjoy the learning techniques as it involves a lot of projects and activities.

Team Work:

A lot many activities and projects (as many as 80%) involve team work. As a result of which the students get more
involved and also develop communication skills apart from developing scientific temperament.

Development of Leadership Quality:

A lot many activities and projects (as many as 80%) involve team work and so they have a team leader who is
responsible for completion of the projects.

International Acknowledgment:

International projects like IASC, SALLY RIDE EARTHKAM give the institution an international acknowledgement.

New Asteroids discovered will be named after the School name.

Solar Observation:

The good part is solar observation in school campus. Not only will the students taking the program participate,

but also the teachers.

Night Sky Observation:

The best part is the Night Sky Observation which includes an overnight stay outside the NCR. It teaches what

Cannot be taught in classrooms. We have been conducting night sky observation in Sariska, Nainital and

Inchhapuri (Haryana).

Students will learn:

* Setup of Telescopes and filters

* Astrophotography

* Locating various deep sky objects like Nebulas, Galaxies, Stars, Constellations and their histories.

* Image Stacking and various applications like Star Trail.

When I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we
are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the
Universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up many people feel small
because theyre small and the Universe is big but I feel big, because my atoms came
from those stars.

Theres a level of connectivity. Thats really what you want in life, you want to feel
connected, and you want to feel relevant, you want to feel like youre a participant in
the goings on of activities and events around you thats precisely what we are, just by
being alive.

- Neil DeGrasse Tyson

(American Astrophysicist)

The Programs consist of one Night Sky Observation at one of the

observational Centers outside the NCR (either Nainital or Sariska). This part
of the Program gives students memories that last long. These trips are
planned and executed for both flavors of Astronomy: Star Gazing (visual
astronomy) and Astro-Photography with dedicated equipment.

Basic aspects of Astronomy are discussed such as types of objects in night

sky- Moon, Satellites, Meteor showers, Asteroids, Galaxies, Nebulae; types
of celestial coordinate systems; types of telescopes and their working; types
of equipment used in Astro-Photography.

Conclusion...
Cosmology Club programs for schools aim to teach students life skills through the intelligent
application of astronomy and space science concepts. Cosmology Club has been running
successfully in Delhi Technological University (Formerly Delhi College of Engineering).

The club brings the student closer to the environment through its astronomy based
outdoor activities. Cosmology Clubs out of the box activities (like outdoor trips, hands-on
activities and projects) inculcate scientific temper & the love for science and environment
amongst the students. The COSMOS programs, which are among the best implemented
educational programs, have been developed in-house by our members.

Students have the opportunity to enroll in the COSMOS programs, which offers courses
in astronomy and space science education at three levels, Beginners, Intermediate and
Advanced. The courses include outdoor scientific camps, and day and evening
observations carried out within and outside the school campus. The students primarily
learn science by observing and analyzing objects around them. The courses teach budding
astronomers various skills including Focusing a telescope on a celestial object,
Identifying celestial objects, Identifying directions without aid, Finding local time,
astrophotography and many more.

Our aims and objectives are derived from the Constitution of India Part IV-A
Fundamental Duties of Citizen, Article 51 A (h), says It shall be the duty of every citizen
of India - to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and
reform

We are constantly striving to use these programs to foster scientific temperament in society, especially
among the youth who are the harbingers of our future. The ultimate intention is to create an
intelligent, analytic and space savvy global community who will be the future leaders in mains
exploration of space and the universe, in a world that is rapidly heading to a space age.
