4.0 Installation Notes

The V-6 PCI has been replaced by two software products: Luxel Server 2.1 and Luxel Desktop 1.0. The Luxel Server
provides communication, licensing and database facilities for Luxel imagesetters. The Luxel Server is compatible with the
database that is used with the V-6 PCI. The Luxel Desktop comprises of a number of user interface applications including
the Dashboard which is a user interface replacement for the V-6 PCI. Both the Luxel Server and Luxel Desktop need to
be installed separately.

4.1 Special note if upgrading from Luxel V6/V6e PCI or from LuxelServer 1.x to LuxelServer 2.x
The database will be imported to a new location. User settings and licence keys will be preserved. However any log files that
have been created will be listed in the new application but not be able to be deleted or exported. Please export log files that
need to be kept and then delete the log entry using the PCI user interface before performing the upgrade.

Windows 2000. requires that the firewire driver is manually installed following the installation of the LuxelServer application.
Please refer to the Windows 2000 specific. instructions in section 4.5.

4.2 General Instructions

Please uninstall any existing instances of LuxelServer, LuxelServer-bundle, Luxel V6 PCI or v6e. Use the 'Add/Remove
Programs' facility of the windows control panel to do this.

Connect, and switch on, the Luxel imagesetter if it is not already connected and ensure that either the application or boot
system is running. Note: it is also acceptable for the imagesetter to be in the shutdown state.

Launch the LuxelServer installer. The LuxelServer is distributed on an CD that will auto-run. Alternatively, the LuxelServer
may be downloaded, as a self extracting executable, from the internet.

Follow the instructions that are provided by the installer. When this completes, check that the installation has completed
successfully. Please note that the application must be installed in the default 'Program Files' folder.

4.3 Checking Server Connectivity.

Start the LuxelServer manager. Do this by double-clicking on the LuxelServer icon in the system tray. Alternatively right-
click on this icon and select control panel.

If the required imagesetter is connected and running as required then the connection status should be displayed as 'Online':

If the connection status is displayed as 'Device not attached' then:

1. Check that the imagesetter is connected correctly

2. Check that the imagesetter has booted without problems. It can be running the boot system or application.

3. Check that the correct firewire driver has been installed and is running without problem. See below:

4.4 Checking the Firewire Driver

A firewire driver that is version 1.51 or later is required. To check what version you have, start the device manager, open
the Luxel V-6 CTP node and select properties from the context menu when the Fujifilm Luxel V-6 CTP Device is selected.
The current version is shown under the driver tab.
If there is no driver then force the PC to detect that a hardware device has been attached. This will cause the 'New
Hardware Wizard' to start which will allow the firewire driver to be installed. Follow the instructions below to install the
driver.

If the driver needs to be upgraded then select update driver from the context menu when the Fujifilm Luxel V-6 CTP Device
is selected. Then follow these instructions:

Do not use the web to search for a driver. Select 'No, not this time'
Select, 'Install software automatically'.

Press 'Ok', even if you haven't got a CD

Browse to the file LuxelV6.sys which is located in LuxelV6, relative to the install folder. Click 'Ok' to complete the
installation. You can check that the driver is installed correctly by using the windows device manager. When the Luxel
Imagesetter is powered on and initialised, the device manager will indicate that the LuxelV6 device driver is loaded:
4.5 Windows 2000.
For windows 2000, start with the Luxel Imagesetter disconnected or switched off. Install the LuxelServer application as
described above. Once this is done, reconnect or switch on, the Luxel Imagesetter. If you are upgrading from a V-6 PCI
version to Luxel Server 2.1, or you are installing the Luxel Server for the first time then you will need to upgrade or install
the firewire driver. Either, use the 'New Hardware Wizard' or the device manager (see section 4.4) to do this.

Click 'Next' to continue.

Leave the default option dselected and click 'Next' to continue.

Click 'Next' to continue.

Insert the LuxelServer CDRom or browse to the location of LuxelV6.inf which is located in LuxelV6, relative to the install
folder.

If this window is displayed then browse to the location of LuxelV6.sys which is located in LuxelV6, relative to the install
folder. Press 'Ok' then 'Next' to complete the installation of the firewire driver.
Check that the driver is installed correctly as described in the general section of these notes, section 4.3 and section 4.4

Installed Applications
The LuxelServer is installed as a windows service. There are also a few support applications that are installed too. These are
installed in the LuxelServer program group that is accessed from the start menu:

'dbfutils'
The LuxelServer has an associated database that is used to store any persistent data that is needed by the Luxel system.
The 'dbfutils' application can be used to view this data and to make backups.

Diagnostic Terminal
This will start a HyperTerminal session. This can be used to issue diagnostic commands and view diagnostic data from a
Luxel imagesetter, that is connected to the host PC with an RS232 cable.

LuxelServerManager
This application is started automatically at start-up and has an associated icon in the system tray. It provides a convenient
way of controlling the LuxelServer and checking its status.

Documentation
This is a shortcut to this documentation.

Service Manager
The LuxelServer can be controlled from the service manager. The following instructions show how to do this assuming
Windows XP, but similar principles exist for other Windows operating systems.

Right-click on 'My Computer' from the desktop or start menu and select 'Manage'
This will then launch the Computer Management window. Select 'Services' from the 'Services and Applications' node in the
left-hand view.

The LuxelServer service will be listed along with its current state in the right-hand view. Double-click the LuxelServer item
to launch a dialog that can be used to stop and start the service.
If you want to disable the service so that it doesn't start automatically when the PC is switched on, set the 'Startup type' to
'Manual' in the LuxelServer properties dialog.

LuxelServer Manager
The recommended way of controlling the LuxelServer service and to check its status is to use the LuxelServerManager.

The LuxelServerManager is started automatically when the user logs in. An icon appears in the system task tray to show
that the manager has started.

Double-click this icon to launch the LuxelServer control panel.

Press 'Stop' to stop the LuxelServer, for example if you want to swap the connected engine with another, or if you want to
change to a different database. Press 'Start' to start the LuxelServer again.

Backing up the Database

The database can be exported to a file. Similarly it can be imported again. This is useful for backup puposes or if you want
to transfer the LuxelServer to a different PC.

Save.

1. Stop the LuxelServer, using the LuxelServer Manager

2. Copy the database using the 'dbfutil' application that is distributed with the LuxelServer

Press 'Save' and specify a location and filename.

Restore.

1. Ensure that the LuxelServer is stopped. If not, stop the LuxelServer, using the LuxelServer Manager

2. Use the 'dbfutil' application that is distributed with the LuxelServer to import a saved databse. Press the 'Restore'
button and specify the previously saved idx database file.

3. Start the LuxelServer.

Troubleshooting
If the connection state of the LuxelServer, indicated by the LuxelServer Manager control panel, is inconsistent with what
you expect, for example the state remains as 'Device not attached', then the following information may help:

Check the Log

The LuxelServer generates a log file called 'systemlog' in the log folder of the installation folder. The log is a set of 10 files
numbered 0 to 9. The eldest is deleted and reopened if the server is started or the current file reaches its maximum size
limit. Open the latest log with a text viewer, for example Notepad, and check for any error messages.

Check the Device Driver

Check that the device driver is installed and working correctly. Launch the Computer Management window by right-clicking
on 'My Computer' and selecting 'manage'. Select Device Manager from the System Tools node in the left-hand view. For
correct operation, you should see the Luxel V6 CTP device listed as shown below. Its properties should also show that it is
working properly. Note that this information is only shown if the engine is switched on.
Failure to Stop or Shutdown
If the device driver is working properly and you still suspect a problem, stop the LuxelServer and restart it. If the
LuxelServer fails to stop, then a low level data transaction may have failed in the driver.

Unplug the firewire cable and replace it. If this fails, then try to restart the LuxelServer service using the following
procedure:

Right-click on the task-bar and launch the Windows Task Manager.

Select the LuxelServer.exe item from the process list. Right-click and choose to end the process. If the process is not
removed, then reboot the engine or disconnect and reconnect the firewire cable. Restart the LuxelServer using the
LuxelServer Manager. If this fails, then save your work and restart the computer.

LuxelServer 2.0.

LuxelServer 2.0.
Version 2.0 is required to support the Luxel Dashboard 1.0 application.
LuxelServer 2.1.

LuxelServer 2.1.
Version 2.1 improves the resilience of this application to firewire bus reset
events. Specifically, if VNIpc fails to register with the engine then the application
assumes that the engine is disconnected. Previously the registration message
would be re-sent but always fail. This resulted in the application consuming 99%
of the CPU usage, effectively causing the PC to 'lock-up'. The engine monitor
functionality has also been improved, allowing the server to recover after a
VNIpc registration failure.
