Unit Outline

Grade Subject: Kindergarten Reading


UNIT TOPIC AND LENGTH:
Enhancing student reading (3 Months Ongoing as needed)

COMMON CORE CONTENT STANDARDS:

With prompting and support, ask and answer questions (e.g., who, what, where, when)
requiring literal recall and understanding of the details and/or facts of a fiction text;

With prompting and support, use narrative language to describe characters, setting,
things, events, actions, a scene, or facts from a fiction text that has been read
independently;

INITIAL ASSESSMENT : (IF APPLICABLE)
Rubric will be available to outline assessment criteria

Increase successful reading through parent involved, self-selected voluntary book reading

Students provide a list of books being read at home, parents must assist the student and
validate their student has read the listed book(s)
Observations, and homework writing sentences using site words will be administered
three times per week
Students will receive a participation grade of good or great for in class activity making
sentences with site words
Students will be assisted in further developing their reading and writing skills

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: (IF APPLICABLE)


No failing grades will be given for reading assignments to encourage the students to
develop a love for reading and writing.

FINAL PERFORMANCE TASK:

Students will write three sentence stories using site words and other key words used
during the assessment period
LEARNING PLAN & ACTIVITIES:
Using technology to read. Students will use the computer to go to sites like
www.starfalls.com to read and learn new words.
Students should be able to increase their language and linguistic skills
Students should become better readers and writers
Students should be able to sound out their site words without assistance
Students should be able to write three sentence stories without assistance.

Additional Support Strategies:


Encourage students to join their local libraries, and start a class lending library, used
books can be purchased from places like Goodwill, and Salvation Army. Ensure easy
and continuous access to self-selected books for reading. Provide students, regardless
of their achievement levels, with as many reading experiences as possible, especially
students whose language and linguistic abilities needs bolstering
