Nouns are any person, place, thing, or idea
For example:
teacher park dog

1
Nouns
Special nouns, called proper nouns, are any specific person, place, thing, or idea.
For example:
Santa Claus New Jersey
The special part about
proper nouns is that they
must always begin with a
capital letter.

because instead of repeating the
same noun over and over again you
can replace it with a pronoun.
There are 11 personal pronouns:

I she me us
you it him them
he we her
4
Possesive Pronouns
There are also special pronouns that are called possessive
pronouns. These pronouns show ownership.

Verbs
A verb is a word that shows action. For example:

sit swim

All three of these words are verbs because they

tell you what the subject (the noun) is doing.
7
Linking verbs
Linking verbs are another type of verb. They however, do not
express action, instead, they link the subject of the sentence
to the predicate. The predicate is the part of a sentence
which tells us what the subject does. Some common linking
verbs are:
am was being feel smell

are were been appear stay

is be seem become taste

Helping verbs
The last type of verbs are called helping verbs. They are
similar to linking verbs but they are not the same. A helping
verb helps the main verb of the sentence to show action. For
example: Phil had joined his friends in their game. Had is
the helping verb and it is helping the verb (join).
Helping have am be do will can
Verbs has are being does would could
had is been did shall may
was should might 9
were must

Adjectives
Adjectives are very special because they give writing detail
and make it more interesting. Adjectives are words that
describe a noun or a pronoun to explain more about it.
Something to remember is that
Some examples are:
Colors, numbers, and many
more!

11
Articles
Articles are special types of adjectives that specifically
answer the question of which one. Their are three main
articles: a, an, and the, but there are other ones too. They
are: this, that, these, and those. They are used like this:

This hat is mine. Which hat? This hat.

The dog swam in the lake. Which dog? The dog.

Sentence Structure
When you put parts of speech together you can create a
sentence. There are two rules for sentences: They must
always begin with a capital letter, and they must always end
with punctuation. When writing a sentence you need to
avoid writing fragments or run ons.
Fragment: an incomplete thought. My father.
Run on: sentences that should be separate. Today I went to
the beach today I sat in the sand.
14
Types of sentences
There are four types of sentences and each one has a special
job. Declarative- makes a statement and
ends with a period.
Imperative- gives a command and ends
with a period.
Interrogative- asks a question and ends
with a question mark.
Exclamatory- expresses strong feeling
and ends with an exclamation point.
Can you write an example of each type of
15
sentence?
You have learned many different parts of speech by
reading this book. Now it is time to put it all together.
Write a sentence or two using each of the new skills you
learned from this book. If you look back at the other
sentences you wrote, you might even notice you have
been using all the parts of speech the whole time!
