THE BRITA STORY


In 1966, Heinz Hankammer had an idea - to create a household water filter to reduce toxins and bad
taste from water By 1970, Hankammer patented the first ever water filter to be used for household use.

Operating from his own backyard, Hankammer won over customers by having them taste two cups of
tea - one with unfiltered water, and one which had been cleaned through his Brita filter. The results
spoke for themselves.

Hankammer's dream became a reality, as this family-owned business grew in the German market.
Within a decade, Brita began operating in a business-to-business setting, with commercial-sized
water filters in Europe and the Americas. The 1970s and 1980s saw expansion of Brita products,
including dispensers, pitchers and new filters.

In 1999, a new era in the Brita story began, when Heinz Hankammer stepped down as CEO, and his
son, Markus Hankammer took over as the sole executive officer. From the beginning, Markus initiated
several comprehensive and forward-thinking measures.

The early 21st century saw expansion for Brita through new production facilities and products. In
2001, Brita tap attachments and kettles with integrated filters hit the consumer market. Other
products, such as customized integrated filtering solutions and the Purity line have allowed Brita to
receive worldwide recognition.

In recent years, Brita focused more on philanthropic and environmental initiatives in addition to
expanded product lines. In 2011, Brita received a Green Ribbon in Germany for its sustainability.
Michelle Obama's "Drink Up" campaign teamed up with Brita in 2014 to help children choose water
over sugary drinks.

At fifty years old, Brita now looks into the future to reach new heights. Brita started as an idea in
1966 operating in Heinz Hankammer's backyard, but it has now become a household name. Expect
even more in the decades to come.
