Electron Volt Calculation for the PV Panel Power

IV Curve

Several important parameters which are used to characterise solar

cells, the short-circuit current (ISC), the open-circuit voltage (VOC),
the fill factor (FF) and the efficiency are all parameters determined
from the IV curve.
The short-circuit current is the current through the solar cell
when the voltage across the solar cell is zero (i.e., when the solar
cell is short circuited). Usually written as ISC, the short-circuit
current is shown on the IV curve below.
The open-circuit voltage, VOC, is the maximum voltage
available from a solar cell, and this occurs at zero current.

Fill Factor
The short-circuit current and the open-circuit voltage are the
maximum current and voltage respectively from a solar cell.
However, at both of these operating points, the power from the
solar cell is zero. The "fill factor", more commonly known by its
abbreviation "FF", is a parameter which, in conjunction with
Voc and Isc, determines the maximum power from a solar cell. The
FF is defined as the ratio of the maximum power from the solar cell
to the product of Voc and Isc.

To calculate FF, Vmp and Imp:

Where:
n: ideality Factor, n=1
K: Boltzmann constant
T:Temprture in K
q: electron charge

Then, we can calculate:

Imp

Efficiency of panel:

By knowing the dimension of panel, Output power can be
calculated.

Example (1):
Given:
Electron charge =1.6*10^-19 column (constant)
Temperature = 300 K
Boltzmann constant = 1.38*10^-23 (constant)
open circuit volt = 38.3 v (from panel
cut sheet)
short circuit current = 8.9 A (from panel
cut sheet)
power input = 1000 w/m2
Panel dimension =(1.6*0.99) m (from panel
cut sheet)

Solution 1:
1. Filling Factor:

FF= (38.3-ln (38.3+0.72))/ (38.3+1) =0.88

SF E |Page 3
FF=0.880.1

2. Maximum Power Voltage (Vpm)

After solving this equation by using solver function

in excel:
Vmp = 31.2 v
3. Maximum Power Current (Ipm):

Imp = (38.38.90.77)/31.2 = 8.4 A

4. Panel efficiency :

= (38.38.90.77)/ (10001.5) = 15.35% .

5. Output power:

SF E |Page 5
short circuit current = 7.82 A (from
panel cut sheet)
power input = 1000 w/m2
panels dimension =(1.6*0.99) m (from panel
cut sheet)

Solution 2:
1. Filling Factor:

FF= (35.5-ln (35.5+0.72))/ (35.5+1) =0.87

FF=0.870.1
2. Maximum Power Voltage (Vpm)

After solving this equation by using solver function

in excel:
Vmp = 28.5 v
3. Maximum Power Current (Ipm):

SF E |Page 6
Imp = (35.57.820.77)/28.5 = 7.81 A

4. Panel efficiency :

= (35.57.820.77)/ (10001.62) = 11.51% .

5. Output power:
Power =0.11510001.62=186.9 watt.
