Lesson 5: End of Slavery

I. General Information:

Time Frame: 45 Minutes (2 days)
Text: Slavery in the United States by Rebecca Rissman
Other Materials: Ipads, kidblog, Notebook

II. Essential Questions


1. How does history shape the present?
2. How have various groups of people influenced the development of America?
3. What can we learn from analyzing major historical events?

Essential Understandings:
1. Slavery was an American cultural, political, and economic issue.
2. Slavery divided America both regionally (North and South) as well as
philosophically from the colonial period until the Civil War.

IV. Lesson Objectives


Students will be able to examine the reasons slavery came to an end.
Students will be able to analyze the Emancipation Proclamation.
Students will be able to adapt the Emancipation Proclamation for a different
audience.

V. Evaluation/Assessment:
Formal: Students will analyze the Emancipation Proclamation and change it for a
different audience. Students will write a blog discussing: How do you need to change
the text, and why?

Informal: Througout the lesson various informal assessments will be admiistered to


check for understanding before their formal assessment. Teacher will ask questions
during the lesson to prompt responses. Participation

VI. Procedures:
Introduction
Ask the students what they think the Emancipation Proclamation is or if
they have ever heard this word before. Students will share their responses. Go over
what this really was during this time in history. Explain to the students that this
was document was very important duiring this time in history.

Teaching/Activities
Day 1
1. Explain to the students that we will revisit our anchor text to find the reasons
slavery came to an end.
2. Students will access the text on Epic.
3. Students will buddy read Chapter 5, while they are reading this chapter
students will write down reasons in their notebook that slavery came to an
end. Students will also write down interesting words or unknown words.
4. We will come back together and share the reasons and the words that the
students have written down in their notebooks.

Closure

Students will complete a video journal entry using SeeSaw talking about what
they learned today, anything interesting and why it was interesting to them.

Day 2
1. Students can share one thing that they found interesting from the previous day
2. Explain to the students that we will be looking more deeply into the Emancipation
Proclamation.
3. We will go back to Epic and turn to page 41 of our anchor text.
4. We will look at this document and talk about what it means to us.
5. Students will look at the bottom of the page and the part: Consider your Audience.
6. Explain to the students that you are going to change this document to address a
different audience such as your classmates or the teacher. Also explain that you
will have to think about how do you need to change the text, and why?
7. Students will write a blog post usiing kidblog addressing this information for your
new audience.
8. Students will work alone (high), partners(mid), and with me (low).
Closure
We will add the L to our KWL chart.
