Middle Level Lesson Plan (based on Danielson Framework)

Intern Name: Joseph Doner

Grade Level: 8th Grade Lit & Comp
School: Evans Junior High School
Lesson Date &
Time:

Instructions: In the boxes below, include the relevant information concerning your
planned lesson.

Purpose/ Students have now covered mean and median as the first two measures of center used
Rationale to describe a set of statistical values. The third and final measure of center used to
describe a statistical set of values measure of center is mode.

Objectives Students will be able to take a statistical set of values and describe its measure of
center using mode.

Academic Mode
Language Measure of center

Standards Common Core State Standard Math Content Grade 6 Statistics and Probability
2:
Understand that a set of data collected to answer a statistical question has a
distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and overall shape.

Assessmen Formative:
ts Students will work on a guided notes during class to use as a model when
completing homework and classwork.
Classwork will be completed after the mini lesson on mode. Once completed,
students will work with their classmates to complete the in class assignment while
the teacher is there to assist, provide support, and answer questions as needed
The instructor should note students who are struggling as they may need to be
retaught the material at a later date.
The instructor should also monitor for students that may need an additional
challenge.
Homework will give more data on how students are grasping the content and help
the instructor prepare for the quiz following this lesson covering everything in
lessons 1-4 of this unit.

Summative:
No summative assessment

Opening - Students will first consider: The last measure of center is called
Engagem mode. Think about what you think it represents, as well as when
ent this measure of center is useful.
This will engage students in conversation around the material,
as well as allow students to remind each other/ recall the
information we covered yesterday. If no students can recall, they
will look at the guided notes, classwork, or homework for help
If after all of these steps they do not recall, the class will share
out their thoughts for a minute or two before beginning median.

Instruction After recalling information from the previous day, students will begin the guided
al notes on mode.
Strategie The instructor will tell students mode is the most frequent number in a set of
s values. It is another measure of center, used to describe a set of values.
(Procedur Just like mean and median, we will use the same problem from the previous day to
es) calculate what the mode is.
Students will recall the process of creating a number line, ordering the data set into
numerical order, and placing the values on the line as a dot plot in the model from
the two previous lessons and as they would have on the previous homework and in
class assignments.
Students will notice that they can count numbers that are the same in the list when
it is a small list of numbers. The visual representation is much more beneficial with
a large set of data.
Another point to make is that there can be multiple mode, but only if there are
multiple values with the same number of repeated values in the data set. An
example would be if there are three rooms with 2 windows, as well as three rooms
with 3 windows. The mode would be both 2 and 3.
Practice problems on worksheet will be completed by the class as the instructor
walks around the room clarifying, assisting, and answering questions after the
notes and PowerPoint are completed.
The instructor should also not students who may need more instruction later, as
well as students who may need differentiation to a higher difficulty level
Preview tomorrows lesson a review of statistical variability in questions and
data, as well as describing a data set by the three different measures of center
mean, medium and mode.

Closure The class will be quizzed on measures of center which they have
spent one day each on, and will also be asked to tell if a question
or data set could be considered statistical based on the presence
of variability.
Students will be asked to complete one last homework

assignment, and also write any questions they have before the
