Guided Observation #1- Contextual Factors

Name: Markeyla Helton

Date: Spring 2017
Course: EDUC 2300 Introduction to Education
School: Newport Grammar School

Interview your mentoring teacher to obtain the demographics about the

school. Write a response for each question in a paragraph format.

1. Record the number of males, females, and ratio of ethnicity within the
classroom.
In Mrs. Wellers first grade classroom, there were thirteen students.
Throughout the school day she kept the same students, except when it was time for
RTI. During that time, she would switch with another classroom and have around
five girls and one boy that she would spend twenty minutes or so with. In her
classroom, there were eight boys and five girls. Each of them white, except for one
boy who was Indian.

2. What are the developmental levels of the students within the classroom
you are observing?
The students in first grade stay with the same students and teacher
throughout their day. They are for the most part all on the same developmental
level. The only difference within the students are the ones who are Tier 2 and Tier 3,
who need extra attention.

3. How is the instruction modified to meet the diverse needs of the

students?
Mrs. Weller is very involved in her students learning. She is hands on and
loves to see her students progress. She has them take turns working writing and
working out problems on the board to make sure everyone understands, this also
keeps their attention. For the ones who are behind in subjects such as reading, she
has them read to her one on one aloud so they can take their time and sound the
words out.
4. Research the school and the Tennessee State Government website to
obtain information of the school community, school report card, and
school population.
From the Tennessee State Government Website, I gathered information about
the school. In 2016, the school had a population of 765 students. They serve grades
kindergarten through eighth. Most the students attending are white, which make up
eighty seven percent of the school. Six percent are African American and the
bottom two percent are Asian and Hispanic. Thirty nine percent of the students
come from economically disadvantaged families. Newport Grammar is currently
eligible for the school-wide Title I Program.

5. What are the specialized programs/ activities found within the school
that would assist special needs children, those who need enrichment
activities, or remediation? List the specific programs that are available.
There is an after-school study hall for students who need to stay after and get
extra help with their homework or with subjects they are struggling in. They also
have RTI throughout the day, and assistance for Tier 2 and 3 students.
