How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
In the past, students have been introduced to the topic of WWI, and will
further continue to build on their prior knowledge of the war and how it
began.

SS6H7 The student will explain conflict and change in Europe to the 21st century.
a. Describe major developments following World War I: the Russian Revolution,
the Treaty of Versailles, worldwide depression, and the rise of Nazism
Learning Objectives/Learning Targets
Objective/Target Assessment
O SWBAT summarize the key events that started WWI. Bell ringer
O SWBAT make connections from Leviathan to WWI. Venn Diagram
Academic Language/Language Function Objectives
Academic language: Students will summarize the key events that started WWI
through the use of a bell ringer.
Language Function: By summarizing, students are gathering any prior
knowledge they have and putting it together to form a precise conclusion or
reasoning.
Language Vocabulary: WWI, assassination, nationalism, Archduke Ferdinand,
Germany, Austria-Hungary, and others.
Assessments
o Bell Ringer
This informal assessment will be given to test prior knowledge. Students will be
given 3-5 minutes to answer the question in complete sentences. The answers will
vary greatly.
o Venn Diagram
This formal assessment will be collected at the end of class and graded. Students
must be able to give good examples for similarities and differences for Leviathan
and WWI. Students should be able to list several for each category.
Student Supports
o Scaffolding will be provided to all of my students when it is necessary. There are
learners of all backgrounds in this classroom. The lower level students will receive
more assistance during the independent work, whereas the higher level students
will receive less. Scaffolding allows my students to receive the exact amount of
assistance they need.
