Lesson #: 1 Lesson Title: WWI
Date: April 11 Day of Week: Tuesday Time (Class Period): 3rd, 4th, and
5th
Central Focus
Students will study the causes of WWI and the main events that took
place in the beginning stages of the war.
Instructional Focus
What do I know about my students that will inform this lesson?
Students have discussed WWI throughout middle school and even in
elementary school. Their background knowledge on WWI should be
substantial, but there are details and necessary information that they
did not learn in depth. Students have also been reading Leviathan in the
ELA classes, which has a lot of parallels to the war.

How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
In the past, students have been introduced to the topic of WWI, and will
further continue to build on their prior knowledge of the war and how it
began.

knowledge they have and putting it together to form a precise conclusion or
reasoning.
Language Vocabulary: WWI, assassination, nationalism, Archduke Ferdinand,
Germany, Austria-Hungary, and others.

Assessments
o Bell Ringer
This informal assessment will be given to test prior knowledge. Students will be
given 3-5 minutes to answer the question in complete sentences. The answers will
vary greatly.
o Venn Diagram
This formal assessment will be collected at the end of class and graded. Students
must be able to give good examples for similarities and differences for Leviathan
and WWI. Students should be able to list several for each category.

Student Supports
o Scaffolding will be provided to all of my students when it is necessary. There are
learners of all backgrounds in this classroom. The lower level students will receive
more assistance during the independent work, whereas the higher level students
will receive less. Scaffolding allows my students to receive the exact amount of
assistance they need.
