As a child growing up in Northern
California, Chelsea Rose loved exploring
outside and getting her hands dirty. Rose,
whos a well-known research archeologist
at Southern Oregon University, now finds
herself in a position to serve as a role
model to young girls interested in science,
and she encourages them to do what led
her to archaeology.
My advice is to be curious, be brave,
ask lots of questions and never pass
up an opportunity to get your hands
dirty, Rose says.
She is one of three U.S. archaeologists
featured in a new book, Archaeology:
Cool Women Who Dig, which is aimed at
9- to 12-year-old girls who enjoy looking
for clues about life in the distant past. The
book, by California author Anita Yasuda,
was published on April 11 and is available
to order now on Amazon.com.
Twenty pages of the 106-page book are
devoted to telling the stories of how Rose
became an archaeologist and some of her
archaeological projects. Rose says she
was chosen for the book because of the
recognition she gained as a cast member
on the PBS series Time Team America,
which last aired in 2014.
She serves currently as research
faculty member in the SOU Laboratory
of Anthropology, where her focus has
been on archaeology of the American
West, including the dispersal of an
early Chinese migrant population in
Oregon. Chelsea is the author of the
popular Jacksonville Review column
Digging Jacksonville, and has overseen
numerous dig sites in town.
I love being able to be a role model for
young girls interested in archaeology,
Rose says. I know I don't look like your
average everyday scientist, and I think it is
important for young womenor anyone,
reallyto discover that if they have an
interest or passion for a certain subject,
then there is a place for them in that field.
If all you see is pictures of male
scientists in white lab coats, (or
fedoras and bull whips in the case of
archaeology) it is understandable that
young girls might not think they belong,
she says. But they do!
Other archaeologists featured in the new
book are Alexandra Jones, founder of the
nonprofit Archaeology in the Community;
and marine archaeologist Justine Benanty,
a cofounder of ArchaeoVenturers. Both are
based in Washington, D.C.
Yasuda, the new books author,
has written more than 100 books
for children and adults, including,
Astronomy: Cool Women in Space.
The archaeology book is part of
the Nomad Press Girls in Science
Series, which also includes titles from
various authors about cool women
in astronomy, technology, forensics,
engineering, aviation, marine biology,
zoology, architecture and meteorology.

Iris and Shirley Demonstrate How
Friendship Endures
I
n 2012, a college friend of mine from over 50 years ago co-authored a book on
how men can achieve true friendship and set the tone in the introduction by
penning, Whereas women very naturally share themselves with friends through
acceptance and self-revealing conversations, men shy away from intimacy. For this
months Sensational Seniors article, I have chosen Iris Sperry and Shirley Blaul,
who demonstrate how to achieve and maintain deep and caring friendships.
Their unique friendship did not happen in childhood but came later in their
Jacksonville lives. To gain an understanding of the friendship, its important to start
with their beginnings. Iris was born on May 3, 1929 in Portland, Oregon. She and her
two sisters lived in St. Helens and, later on, several other small Oregon communities.
Her father was a branch manager for US Bank and also worked in the county tax
department. During World War II, the family lived in Westport, Oregon and in 1945
came to Portland where Iris finished high school at Lincoln High School. From there,
Iris spent two years at Oregon State College before finishing her degree in Elementary
Education at Oregon College of Education.
Shirley was born on May 1, 1934 in Mason City, Iowa where she was an only
child, or as Shirley tells it, I was a limited edition. She remembers a stable life in
Mason City where she attended all 12 years of schooling before moving on to Iowa
State University where she continued her love of the clarinet by playing in the Iowa
State band. She remembers her college days with some angst because, even though

she loved science in high school and had received a science award, the assistant
dean at Iowa State told her, Women dont belong in science. You need to major
in home economics. So that is what she did, graduating in 1956. Even with the
disappointment of not being able to choose her major, she had two highlights: she
had 16 girlfriends who have remained close all these years, and in her senior year,
met her future husband, Louis.
Iris, after graduating from college, taught for one year in Warren, Oregon and then
married her eighth-grade sweetheart, Roger Strother, who had just taken a position
with the CIA. Shortly after marriage they were off to Greece for 2 years. While
there, their daughter, Nancy, was born and she left Greece pregnant with son, Neil.
Iris remembers Greece as a very fertile place. After several moves with the CIA
and a stint with Hughes Aircraft, in 1960, Roger took a job in Portland with a start-up
company, Tektronix. Tragedy then struck the family as Roger at age 32 was killed in a
single car accident, leaving Iris with two small children. While this was a difficult time
for her, she says she was blessed to receive the proceeds of a substantial life insurance
policy and Tektronix treated her very well. As a result, Iris was able to be a stay-at-
home mom, which was a priority for her.
Shirley, upon graduation from college, worked for a short period of time in the
test kitchen for Better Homes and Gardens magazine before marrying Louis Blaul.
After a tour of naval duty in Guam, where their daughter, Mirth, was born, Louie,
in 1960, started a long career with Bank of America. They transferred to California
where their son, John, was born and from there to Singapore. Returning to California,
Louis continued working for Bank of America while Shirley started a photograph
note card business and eventually had her cards in 32 Marin County stores. Their
lives, however, were upended in 1984 when their 21-year-old son was diagnosed with
melanoma and only lived three months before passing. And then ten years later, Louis
was diagnosed with lymphoma and died in 1993 at age 60.
After the death of Iriss first husband, Roger, she was single for eight years before a
member of her church introduced her to 40-year old bachelor, Roger Sperry. And as
Iris says, In 1968, I married Roger Number Two and started a new phase in my life.
Roger was a hospital controller, first in Portland and then for 7 years in Ketchikan,
Alaska before returning to Portland where tragedy again struck as Roger died in 1988
from lung disease, also at age 60.
Fast-forward now to their separate moves to Southern Oregon. Iris came to
Jacksonville first in 1999 mainly because her sister, Mary Jones, lived here and Iris had
made numerous visits and found Jacksonville charming. Shirley spent six more years
in California after her husbands death, during which time she managed her grieving
by travel and activity. She visited France, China and Italy and had a memorable trip
to New Zealand where she experienced bungee jumping. She took many cycling trips
and three serious back packing trips. She rode her bicycle across the United States and
in the process, raised monies for Hospice charities. In 1984, with a friend, she climbed
Mount Shasta, where she sprinkled her son, Johns ashes. She made her Southern
Oregon move in 2000 when she relocated with two other widows, the commonalities
being they were longtime acquaintances and women of faith. They located on 10 acres
in the Applegate, and Shirley enjoyed two years there but eventually decided that she
wanted to live in Jacksonville.
Shirley and Iris first met in 2001 through the Applegate Garden Club and both
became members of the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church where in a short time
they became active. In 2002, Iris helped locate a townhouse in Jacksonville near
hers for Shirley, and the friendship became stronger and more important. Early
on they realized that they were connected for a reason; for both had suffered from
severe depression. Iris had been diagnosed as bi-polar in 1997 and with therapy
and medication was able to return to a normal life. Shirley had received a similar
diagnosis, which she believes was initially caused by the loss of her son, followed by
the death of her husband. They talk about their depression without reservation in
hopes that people suffering from depression will know that it is not uncommon and
that, you can get help and should seek it.
Something else they share is a passion for service, and the list of their volunteer
activities is impressive. Shirley has been a Hospice volunteer since 1984 and on the
day of my interview with them, she had to be sure she could make a 5:00pm Hospice
visit. In the 1970s, Shirley was a Girl Scout leader, and Iris, while living in Ketchikan,
started a volunteer program for the hospital. But it was in Jacksonville that their
volunteerism rose to a new level. For example, they became active members of the
Jacksonville Boosters Club, shared a Food and Friends meal delivery route, served
together as Deacons of Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, started the Prayer Shawl
Ministry and still assist with the churchs Vacation Bible School. For many years they
both housed classical Britt musicians. Seniors - Cont'd. on Pg. 35

Southern Oregon Magazine Best Place to Listen to Live Music & competitions were held, including two

competition is organized by the Oregon

the complexity of poetry.

intended to conveyand how to say
it. Much like a musician reads notes,
poets write with line breaks for clues
as to when to use a dramatic pause
or to convey happiness or sadness.

Gimenez-Smith and Personal, by Tony

her favorite poet, finding him easy to

for being introduced to the poetry
program through her elective class,
Speech and Debate, which she calls the
best class everits where I found my
calling and my real talent. She notes
that her favorite non-Speech subject is
Algebra (she was born with her fathers
math gene,) and that shes also taking
Spanish 2, Advanced English, AP Human
Geography, Theater and Honors Science.
As a rare left-brain, right-brain student,
Delaney carries a 4.0 GPA, something she
says, I intend to do for all four years of
high school, if possible. She also plans to
become fluent in Spanish by completing
five years of coursework in four years.
And next school year, she plans to run
for Sophomore Student Body President,
which will add another dimension to her
incredibly energetic and demanding high
school career. As for where she wants
to attend college, its a bit too early to
make that call but Delaney is extremely
interested in studying to become a
registered dietician. After speaking
with this remarkable young woman,
theres little doubt that shell accomplish
anything she sets her mind to doing
with a poetic flare of course!

Regina Dorland Robinson A Lasting Impression

or most of her brief life, Regina
Dorland Robinson worked
steadily toward one goal: to
become an accomplished and successful
artist. She studied and practiced
technique, experimenting with multiple
mediums and styles.
By 1916, at the age of
24, she had gained
a confidence and
competency that
gave her work its
inspiring uniqueness.
Dorland was receiving
recognition for her
work, not only in
her home state of
Oregon, but around
the San Francisco Bay
Areaa major center
of West Coast art
circles. The following
year, in the spring
of 1917, she took her
own life. How could
she come so close to
achieving her lifes dream only to end it
so abruptly? And why?
Born in 1891, Dorland grew up in an
impressive three-story home on the edge
of Jacksonville. Her parents, Dr. James and
Tillie Robinson, were prominent citizens in
the community. Dorlands father began his
medical practice in 1878 and later opened
the City Drug Store. He sat on the town
council and served at least one term as
mayor. Dorlands mother was the daughter
of a successful gunsmith and hardware
merchant. Grandmother, aunts and uncles
lived close by. Dorland was from a family
with influence and reputation.
A year before Dorlands birth, the
Robinsons first two children, six-year-
old Willie and five-year-old Leah,
died a week
apart from
diphtheria.

grief, Dorlands
parents
centered their
lives around
their precious
new baby.
Beautiful and talented, Dorland became a
cherished but overly-protected little girl.
To keep her from harm, the Robinsons
kept close rein on her activities, sent her
to a private school and carefully chose
her playmates. As a result, Dorland was
variously described as a lonely girl,

Dorlands first exposure to art came in
her own home where ornately-framed
landscapes adorned the parlor walls. Her

something about painting early on from
both men and showed artistic potential
at a young age. Her eighth-grade
drawings, part of a class assignment at
St. Marys Academy, reveal untrained yet
remarkable ability.
As an adolescent, Dorland spent
countless hours drawing and painting.
Her parents exposed her to major
art exhibitions in Portland and San
Francisco featuring 17th, 18th and 19th
century paintings by Dutch, English,
and French masters and French and
American Impressionists. The latter
in particular may have inspired the
Impressionist style that she was to
emulate in much of her own work.

 Jacksonville Haunted History Tours Return!
Beginning Friday, May 5, ghosts and
spirits from Jacksonvilles pioneer past
will again be the subjects of Historic
Jacksonvilles Haunted History walking
tours. On the first Friday of each Month
from May through September, costumed
docents will share notable tales of woe,
sorrow, and regret at 7, 7:15, 7:30, and
7:45pm. These approximately one-hour

Oregon and C streets, are limited to 15
people and reservations are required. The
cost is $5 per person, with profits going
to historic preservation efforts.
Here in Jacksonville we take our
history seriously, notes Carolyn
Kingsnorth, President of Historic
Jacksonville, Inc. We respect the legacy
the pioneers left us. But weve also
learned that some of these pioneers have
been reluctant to leave and are still with
us in the form of spirits and ghosts."
These tours are not your typical
ghost tours with special effects. They
are history tours about real hauntings
resulting from past events. The stories
some scary, some benigncome from
multiple sources, from people who have
experienced these lingering spirits. These
tours are our attempt to recognize and
honor these restless souls.
This year, Historic Jacksonville, Inc.
will be offering two different tour
routes. May and June will feature Britt
Hill tours with saloons, Oregons first
Chinatown, and two of the most haunted
houses in town, says Kingsnorth. This
tour is a little strenuous since it does
require our tour guide and guests to huff
and puff their way up Britt Hillbut the
stories are worth it!
In July, August, and September,
well be taking the Courthouse
route with tales of brothels, disease
epidemics and hangings. The
two routes give participants the
opportunity to come back for more
and give us the opportunity to share
more of Jacksonvilles storied history.
Private tours for groups of 10 or more
are also available.
In October, Historic Jacksonville will
offer the Britt Hill tour on October 13
and the Courthouse tour on October 14.
They will be part of what will literally
be a month-long celebration of the spirits
of Jacksonville with the Friends of
Jacksonvilles Historic Cemetery offering
their Meet the Pioneers tours the first
weekend; our tours the second weekend;
and the Chamber of Commerces
Haunted Trolley tours the third and
fourth weekends.

Jacksonville Firewise Update
April was a very busy month for
Jacksonvilles Firewise program. As of
January, our city now has six certified
Firewise neighborhoods and one about

busy preparing for fire season.
We began the season with
a free large landscape debris
collection in the Rich Gulch
neighborhood on April 8.
Two, 30-yard dumpsters
were on-site on South Oregon
Street and the neighbors had
them completely filled by
noon. A very well organized
team of the neighborhood Firewise
Board members, Oregon Department
of Forestry crew, Jacksonville CERT
members and Fire Department
firefighters assisted with this effort.
It was truly a neighbors helping
neighbors achievement.
Next up was a defensible space
assessment of the Wells Fargo
neighborhood that took place April 12
and 13. This was done with help from
the Firewise Board members, Fire staff
and Jacksonville CERT members. The
assessment involves walking house-
to-house to review what measures
need to be taken to create adequate
defensible space around each home.
This information is compiled into a
Firewise report and submitted to the
Oregon Department of Forestry state
representative and the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA). If this
report meets the Firewise program
requirements, the NFPA then certifies the
neighborhood and grant funds become
available to assist neighbors in
addressing some of the significant
defensible space issues.
The other certified neighborhoods
of Gold Terrace, Valley Lane,
Hangman and Vineyard
View are currently planning
their annual events such as
neighborhood educational parties
or clean-up days.
The final activity was another
debris collection event in the Westmont
neighborhood on April 29th with the
assistance of the same teams who have
helped at each Firewise day event.

Ive been hearing a lot from constituents
about Senate Bill 557, which proponents
are calling the Clean Energy and Jobs
Bill. Many people are on both sides of
this issue here in our district. Some want
me to take a strong stance against the
proposal and others want me to take an
equally strong stance supporting it.
I was elected to represent this
district and everyones opinion matters
to me. Ive learned that if youre
hearing from both sides of an issue,
you may be on to something.
At this point, SB 557 is in the Senate
Environment and Natural Resources
Committee. I will follow as my colleagues
debate the issue and receive testimony.
I believe every decision we make should
be made with consideration as to how it
affects our environment, livability and
how it will benefit our lives. But I also
have some serious concerns about this bill.
Similar stated intentions led to the
creation of the Business Energy Tax
Credit (BETC) program, which later
became the source of much controversy.

last year detailed a series of issues that
are worthy of consideration. Among
them was that the agencies charged
with administering the program failed
to perform any control or risk analysis
of the program, which cost Oregon
taxpayers around $1 billion.
Auditors found circumstantial
evidence of suspicious activity on at
least 75 BETC transactions totaling over
$300 million that were later referred to
the Oregon Department of Justice for
further investigation.
Projects were approved for tax
credits for businesses that later filed for
bankruptcy or went out of business. There
was also evidence uncovered in the audit
of potential conflicts of interest among
persons on various task forces established
through these policies and programs.
More recently, an article was published
discussing an ongoing fraud case related
to the BETC program.
The money that went toward
questionable projects could have gone
to reducing class sizes in our schools,
fixing our roads and other infrastructure,
providing health care to our neediest
citizens and public safety. Its important
that we learn from these past mistakes
and not try to repeat them.
Legislation is a deliberative process,
and for good reason. The laws, programs
and policies that we pass must be well
thought out and vetted before they affect
every person in this state. I will continue
to be mindful of those affects when
voting on the bills that come before me
while representing the people of Senate
District 3.

ve always wanted to play Walter
Winchell in one of my columns.
Walter would jump from topic to
topic in almost every other sentence.
So with the forbearance of my
publisher, here goes.
Greetings Mr. and Ms. Jacksonville
wherever you are, in your home or in one of
our coffee shops, restaurants, or traveling.
Weve had great feedback on ODOTs
change to the Y intersection where
the Jacksonville Hwy and 238 meet.
This should reduce the accidents at
that location and there were many.
Congratulations to the bureaucrats who
got it right. Now the next change will be
at the intersection of 5th and California
where near-misses happen all day long.
A couple stopped in at New City
Hall to see what the place looked like.
It turns out they were from the other
Jacksonvillethe one in Florida. They
like our town so much theyre coming
back in five months to see about moving
here. During their tour of our new offices,
they stopped to admire Jacksonvilles
latest acquisition, a marvelous 1883 piano
donated to the city by Donna McMann.
On top of the piano is a matching clock
dated 1883 and, of course, the building
was completed in 1883. Donna doesnt
even live in Jacksonville. Now thats
generosity. Another very generous donor
is Joyce Coleman who donated an early
Eugene Bennett original enamel on paper
for New City Hall. This can be seen in the
conference room which was the old Peter
Britt room on the main floor. A big thank
you to these two people!
Also a thank you to Donna Briggs as
a new Britt season unfolds. Blessed by
Donna Briggs leadership, it promises to
be another outstanding year. Few people
know how complex the job of running
a venue like Britt really is. Dealing
with artists and their temperaments,
negotiating with their managers, staffing,
operating, and maintaining a large facility,
and dealing with government regulations
at every turn, are only some of the tasks.
We ran a movie called The Westerner
at Old City Hall. The story begins in a
saloon owned by Judge Roy Bean where
the judge calls on the drinking customers
to act as jurors. Turns-out Texas wasnt
the only place where that was common.

From 1852 to about 1859, thats how it
was done right here in Jacksonville where
bars served as makeshift courtrooms.
It isnt recorded whether sobriety was
necessary to serve as a juror. Nor was the
quality of the whiskey!
Town citizens continue to prove how
great they are. The latest word is the
Boosters have donated $1,500 to help
defray the startup costs for the Randall
Theatre at the Calvary Church. Also,
three Booster couples wishing to remain
anonymous have each offered $500. Now
thats community spirit in action. On the
same theme, our citizen of the year, Linda
Kestner, can be seen attending every
City Council meeting always with a
smile always with a positive bearing
wonderful is the word that comes to
mind. How different from another citizen
who comes with a scowl hoping to find
something wrong. Every town has one.
Another citizen with a smile is Michele
Brown-Riding who approached the City
with a marvelous idea. Why not have a
Firewise Garden where the lumber yard
ends at Fourth and Main Streets, where
citizens could go and discover plants that
are more fire-resistant for landscaping
their houses? This idea is too good to
pass up. Another suggestion was made
by yours truly to run our new trolley
once every hour from Royal Mobile and
Pioneer Village to the center of town.
Chamber Executive Director Tim Balfour
is considering that one. This new trolley is
a welcome addition to our town because
the windows can be taken out during the
warmer summer months. Thats the way
the streetcars used to operate where I
grew up. Meanwhile, it seems old trolleys
dont always wind up in the scrapyard.
Ours has found a new home in Bandon,
Oregon where they have the money and
resources to restore it.
In just a few days, May 5th to be
precise, On the Town will open for a
month-long run at our new Randall
Theatre. The show focuses on New York
but the title suits Jacksonville. We live
in an incredible town. As the publisher
reminded me, This is a wonderful time
of year to get out and discover something
new and wonderful about Jacksonville
and make new friends in the process

Supporting the Troop SupportersPolice
Chief David Towe was recognized by Mark
Libanke, of Employer Support of Guard and
Reserves, for his support of his officers still
serving in reserve military roles. In this case,
the award was presented to Towe by former
Jacksonville police officer Mark Slagle, who
deployed with the US Coast Guard Reserves
while an active police officer in Jacksonville.
Slagle transferred duty to the Eagle Point
Police Department last month.
Newsletter NewsFinance Director
Stacey Bray showed the newsletters that will
be included with the City service/water bill
each month, starting in March. The purpose
is to keep citizens updated and informed on
City happenings. Bray also demonstrated
several new features of the City website,
including auto-pay for city water bills.
Fire Department Yearly UpdateFire
Chief Devin Hull presented his annual
report that included incident statistics
and response times. The department
has completed training, recertification,
and continuing education to enhance
the skill level of the staff. Hull reported
the department now provides Advanced
Life Saving services, the highest level
of care delivered in a pre-hospital
environment. The level of service
delivery from Basic to ALS, is improved
with use of the Zoll Monitor, enabling
12 EKG leads to be employed in the
field, with faster cath lab notification
in an event of a Heart Attack. Hull also
reported that the CERT Team has 5 New
Members, all of whom have completed
the FEMA training this past year.
Boosting the BoostersMayor Paul
Becker recognized the Boosters Club
for their generous donation of $1,500
to the new Randall Theatre. The funds
will be used for their start-up costs,
including building a new stage at the
Calvary Church location on 5th Street.
In addition, three other couples from the
Boosters made private donations towards
the start-up costs, totaling another $1500.
Car Show Gets Green LightCouncil
gave its approval to hold the Fall Classic
Car Show at the Bigham Knoll campus.
After reports of traffic issues from last
years event, Rod McCloud, with Rogue
Valley Corvette Club, informed council
that the issues have been corrected and
that the location of the show was ideal for
the club and town.
Forest Park Potty PlannedCouncil
approved applying for a Local
Government Grant from The Oregon
Parks and Recreation Department for
the development of a restroom structure
in Forest Park. Administrator Alvis and
Forest Park leader Tony Hess spoke
to the need, and the $36,000 price tag.
Hess and Alvis noted that the cost will
be covered by a $20,000 grant from state
lottery funds, city matching funds of
$8,500, $4,000 in grants, $4,000 from
the Boosters Club and Woodlands
Association, plus $3,000 from private
donations and $2,000 in city crews/
equipment matching funds.
Fortunate for FirewiseHerb Johnson,
Forestry Officer with the Oregon
Department of Forestry presented six
Firewise Communities with recognition
certificates for their dedication to fire
safety in their neighborhoods. The six
communities and volunteer coordinators
are Ron Holthusen and Carolyn
Burrill, Vineyard ViewBarbara Hurd,
Westmont/MaryAnnTracey Hruska,
Hangman WayPam Smith & Ron
Ruppert, Rich GulchJon Gailis, Valley

Super Star is Honorary Citizen
Michele Brown-Riding, an Applegate
Valley resident, was named an Honorary
Jacksonville Citizen in a formal
presentation by Mayor Becker. Riding was
nominated by fellow CERT and Firewise
members Gayle Lewis and Carol Knapp.
Riding has spent years building the
Firewise program and making it a success,
for which we are all grateful.
Visitor Information Center
Performing WellIn his annual report,
Chamber of Commerce Executive
Director Tim Balfour reported on
strong visitor counts and increasing
tourism numbers. Balfour and Council
discussed topics including new methods
of counting visitors, website updates,
social media campaigns and the need to
increase off-season overnight stays.
Citizen-Volunteers WantedCouncil
directed staff to create an application
process for a new Citizen Advisory
Committee (CAC). Interim Planning
Director Converse provided background
on the process with a report on the
Planning Commissions decision to
indefinitely continue the code revision
update. The delay is intended to allow
staff review of the citizen involvement
program and testimony received
regarding the draft code. Staff created a
map of Jacksonville, naming seven regions
from which a volunteer member would
be sought to get a broad cross-section of
the population. Despite discussion that
the code revision process will inevitably
be challenged no matter the outcome
with an appeal to the Land Use Board of
Appeals, council opted to move forward
with creation of the CAC. (Please see city ad
in this issue on previous page.)
Community Center Cash
CompassionAfter hearing an appeal for
relief from the group developing the soon-
to-be-built Community Center, council
unanimously agreed to waive certain
application fees, namely the systems
development charges totally nearly $3600.
Cock-a-Doodle Do Something
Council heard from a group of neighbors
in the Westmont/Pair-a-Dice Ranch/
MaryAnn Drive area whove been
subjected to ear-piercing rooster calls
for several years. (This publisher
is included.) Members from five
households testified, stating that their
quiet enjoyment has been ruined by
roosters crowing from dawn to dusk. All
asked the city council for relief. Although
council weighed the option of drafting
a new, no-rooster ordinance, it opted
instead to discuss the matter further with
the city attorney who will likely suggest
changes to the citys nuisance ordinance.
First Full-Time, Female on Force
Calling her articulate and genuine,
Police Chief David Towe informed
Council that Kayla Cuttins will become
Jacksonvilles first-ever, full-time, female
Police Officer. Towe noted that Cuttins
graduated with a degree in Spanish and
Criminal Justice and that she will be on
the job starting May 1.

Whats Going On?

Due diligence, says Rick Patsche, of extra months to do it right, then Im

President of the Jacksonville Community
Center (JCC)/Cedars on 4th. We reported
earlier that we had hoped to break
ground on the new community center
in the first quarter of 2017. Although we
initially thought the building permits
would take a few weeks, the process has
actually taken more than two months
and was just finalized on April 4 when
the City Council voted to waive a portion
of the permit fees. Some subcontractors
wanted to see the actual permits before
submitting bids; other subcontractors
chose not to submit a bid; and some bids
came in higher than we were expecting.
These realities have resulted in soliciting
additional bids, negotiating bids
with subcontractors and approaching
suppliers about donating materials.
According to Patsche, one of the
reasons he believes he was elected
President of the Board in late 2015,
was because of his experience with
construction and contractors. I take the
responsibility placed upon me by the
Board very seriously, says Patsche. We
have waited a long time to build our
community center and if it takes a couple
good with that, he adds.
Community leaders have worked for
more than 17 years to build a community
center. To date, more than 95% of JCCs
fundraising goal has been achieved.
There is less than $25,000 still needed
so Cedars on 4th continues to accept
donations. (Please see donation form
below.) The community center will have
small meeting rooms for classes and a
large great room that can accommodate
events like wedding receptions, reunions
and parties. Volunteers are currently
working on developing programs for
when the center opens later this year.
Right now, Patsche is working closely
with the Ausland Group, the contractor
and designer retained by JCC to build
the center, to assemble the best team
possible for this project. We dont want
to just put together a patchwork of
subs, says Patsche. We want a team of
contractors and subcontractors that can
and will work together on a schedule
that will allow us to start and finish the
community center on time and within
budget and that is what is taking us a
little extra time. Due diligence.

for Financial Literacy

ust in case you missed it, April was
Financial Literacy Month. This
isnt something you would have
learned in school because as a country
we have done a poor job educating
students about personal finance. Most
of us learned our financial acumen
from our parents or friends, and who
knows where they learned it from! Lets
take this opportunity to discuss some
of the tools anyone can use to better
understand and navigate the sometimes
complicated world of personal finance.
With May upon us, this is a great time of
year to recommit to getting our financial
houses in order.
Most of us will typically spend weeks
doing research and planning to go on a 5
day vacation to Disneyland, but we wont
spend a half-hour on planning for our
eventual retirement which could last 35
years! Here are a few tips that may help
you get the ball moving towards becoming
a better steward of your finances:
1. Automate Your Savings and
Investing. Have a portion of your
paycheck go directly into your
savings and retirement accounts. Try
to have 4-6 months of expenses set
aside in a liquid savings account. If
you have credit card debt, pay it off
every month. Use autopay to pay the
balance off monthly.
2. Maximize Your Retirement Plan.
The more you can put in your
retirement accounts now, the better
off you will be down the road. This
is something that is best put on
auto-pilot. Like the Ronco Chicken
Rotisserie Oven, set it and forget it.
3. Reallocate Your Investments. The
equity markets have been on a nearly
meteoric rise since the spring of
2009. If you havent taken the time to
reallocate your portfolio to continue
to meet your risk tolerance, you
could be taking on a great deal of
unintended risk.
4. Everyone Needs Estate Planning.
You dont have to be Thurston Howell
III to need an Estate Plan. Do you
want to decide what happens to your
things when you leave this world
or would you prefer the State do it?
Wills, Trusts, Guardianships, Power
of Attorney, and Advanced Directives
all are important considerations for
you and your family.

y dad was a really smart and
talented guy. There wasnt
much he couldnt do, and do
pretty well. His main difficulty for most
of his early life, however, was that he
didnt have many resources to work with.
Growing up during the Great Depression
taught dad to be resilient, clever and
resourceful. Once he joined the US Army
Air Corps, his resource problems got a
lot easier. The Government had all kinds
of neat stuff that a kid who grew up in
logging camps could only dream of.
Like airplanes. Dad loved airplanes and
flying and taught me to love them, too.
Some of the best memories I have are of
dad and me flying somewhere even if
it was just to get a hamburger and slice
of pie. So, the Goverment taught dad
to fly and dad taught me, for which Ill
always be grateful. But flying requires a
whole different approach than driving
because you cant just pull over when
something goes haywire.
For instance, Pilots always do a
preflight inspection. You give the
plane a good going over and check
5. Manage Your Debt. Develop
a strategic debt management
habit that sees you paying down
expensive debt first like credit
cards and personal loans. The key
is to pay off your debt and not
accumulate expensive debt moving
forward. Many changes in little
habits can provide big savings in the
long run. Do you need that Mocha
every morning? Ok most of us do,
but how about packing lunch a few
times a week?
6. Invest for the Long-Term. Investing
is a marathon and not a sprint. Pick
a strategy that is right for you and
stick with it through the good and
the bad. Discipline is perhaps the
greatest tool for long-term success.
Remember what Rocky Said, The
world aint all sunshine and rainbows. Were betting on the future!

In Defense of Presidents
and Generals
T for an evening of
he North was losing the war to
keep the Union. Robert E. Lee,
a southern aristocrat, originally
asked to lead the Union, chose the side
of his beloved Virginia even though his
personal belief was slavery to be a moral
and political evil. Lee was a U.S. Military
Academy man, smarter and tougher
than any of Lincoln's field generals. The
Confederate rebels were hardened, gritty
farm boys willing to fight and bleed for
their jaded cause and for honor as they
knew it. The very future of America was
in the balance.
Lincoln then
hired Ulysses
S. Grant, a
rough, crude
man with a
bad drinking
problem.
Grant was
tough as nails,
a brawler and
not afraid
to die in battle nor to ask of his men
the same. Grant came with no political
baggage. Unlike his gentile West Point
brethren, he wasnt beholden to the upper-
class order and had no agenda other than
winning on the battlefield. Grant was the
vehicle Lincoln used to end the Civil War,
preserve this great country and rid us of
the scourge of slavery.
George Patton was a rabid narcissist,
abusive, foul-mouthed and self-
righteous. Patton had no time for politics.
General Patton, however, did what no
other general could or would do. He took
huge risks to do the impossible, governed
by a warrior spirit and steely will to win.
Patton is the reason why Hitler could not
take a breath on the western front. The
Supreme Allied Commander and soon-
to-be leader of the free world, General
Dwight Eisenhower, used Patton as a
battering ram to penetrate the Rhineland,
bring Hitler to his knees and destroy the
evil of Nazism.
President Lyndon Baines Johnson was
raised Southern Democrat, a redneck in
the classic tradition, not the current day,
watered down, everybodys a racist
redneck. The Republican opposition
was the party of Lincoln. LBJ was a
notorious womanizer, a crude bully, vile-
mouthed and master political strategist.
Johnson was responsible for pushing his
Democrat-controlled Congress to pass the
Civil Rights laws his predecessor, John
F. Kennedy, began and it was his own
stubborn party of the Donkey needing to
be pulled across the aisle.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was on the
holy march, changing hearts and minds.

many steps
and the type
of financing
you choose is
one of the most
important. Just
as homes come
in a variety of architectural styles
and prices, so do the ways you can
finance them. While its easy to tell
if you prefer a ranch style home or a
craftsman, figuring out what kind of
loan you should get requires a little
more investigation. Your lender can
discuss all your options in detail, but
this will help you understand some of
the main loan types.
Conventional Loans:
Conventional loans are also known as
conforming loans, since they conform to
a set of standards set by Fannie Mae and
Freddie Mac. They are the most common
type of loans because they offer good
rates, low costs and flexibility. Following
are the main points of this program:
Can be used to purchase a primary
residence, second home, or rental
property.
Are available in fixed rates,
adjustable rates (ARMs), and offer
many loan termsusually from 10 to
30 years.
Down payments as low as 3%.
No monthly mortgage insurance
with a down payment of at least 20%.
Lower mortgage insurance costs than
FHA loans.
Mortgage insurance is cancelable
when home equity reaches 20%.
Interest only loans have a lower
payment but the loan balance is not paid
off when you make your regular payment.
Government Insured Loans:
FHA Loan. FHA loans were created
for lower income households that would
otherwise not be able to purchase a home
due to poor credit. These mortgages are
government-insured, which guarantees
that the lender wont lose its money if
the borrower defaults. Here are the main
points of this program:
Loan limits are capped based on the
medium home price in the county
the house is located.
More lenient credit guidelines. Those
with less-than-perfect credit may
qualify.
Interest rates are lower than some
other loan programs.
Down payment of only 3.5% of the
purchase price.
If the home needs repairs, you may
opt for the FHA 203k loan (loan that
allows you to include the renovation
costs into your loan).
The seller can pay most of your
closing costs.
Requires less income and assets than
other loan types.
Gift money for the down payment
allowed.
A co-signer on the loan may be
allowed.

process is streamlined.
FHA Mortgage insurance remains in
place for the life of the loan.

Federal and Oregon veterans' home
loan programs gives active or retired
military personnel the opportunity to
purchase a home with a zero-down
payment and no mortgage insurance
premium. VA loans also offer low
interest rates. Here are the main points
of this program:
No down payment
Minimal closing costs
No private mortgage insurance (PMI)
Easier refinancing
Low rates
Must pay a mandatory funding fee
that can be up to 3% of the total
mortgage amount, although it may
be reduced or waived.
Backed by the Department of
Veteran's Affairs, these loans involve
additional steps during processing
which can lengthen the approval
process.
While borrowers can take advantage
of VA limits to closing fees, sellers
may be forced to pay them,
discouraging many from considering
VA buyers.
The VA enforces rigid requirements
for home inspections, which can
delay the process and even impede
buyers who would like to purchase
the home as is. For instance,
if the home requires any repairs
and the seller is not willing to do
these repairs, the home may not be
approved for VA financing.
USDA Rural Housing Loan:
This loan is offered by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) in
rural areas. Geared toward low-income
buyers, USDA loans can have down
payments as low as 0%. Here are the
main points of this program:
Allows for 100% financing with no
down payment.
Loan qualifying criteria and credit
standards are flexible.
Monthly mortgage insurance (PMI)
is required but less when compared
to FHA loans.
Home seller can pay all buyers
closing costs and escrow fees.
The house must be located in a
USDA eligible location.
Household income must be below
the USDA income limit per county.
Your lender may offer additional types
of loans so be sure to contact your lender
for details on these programs and others
that may be available.

 Story Problems in Real Life

o you remember story problems
from grade school math class?
There was always a known
quantity, but because of changing variables,
we would have to figure out the new
quantity. These problems were designed to
make numbers more relevant to real life.
We may not have realized at the time,
but these story problems really do apply
to our changing situations throughout
our lives. Some of us are baby boomers
and have worked most of our lives,
raised families, paid mortgages and
tried to save what we could towards
retirement. With retirement now
approaching, we are facing a whole new
set of variables in our life-story problems.
While the characters in the following
examples are fictitious, here are two
life-story problems that those in our age
group (60 + with thoughts of retirement)
may be experiencing:
Problem 1: Steve will soon be eligible
for Social Security benefits at age 62. Steve
knows that if he delays taking Social Security,
his SS benefit will increase 6.25% each
year until age 66. If his Primary Insurance
Amount (PIA is his benefit at full retirement
age of 66) is $1000, how much will his
reduced benefit be if he takes his Social
Security at age 62?
Answer: $ 750. By taking his benefit
early at age 62, Steves benefit will have
been reduced 25% from his full amount
at age 66.
Problem 2: Jeffs PIA is $1000, if he
takes his Social Security Benefit at his full
retirement age of 66. Jeff is still working and
may want to delay taking his SS benefit. He
knows that his benefit will grow 8% each year
(simple interest) from age 66 to age 70. How
much will his monthly benefit be if he waits
until age 70 to take his Social Security?

planet produces a next generation,
or offspring, be it plant or animal. The
production of that next generation is
dependent on many
factors such as
weather, predator
abundance, etc. Cold
weather at just the
right (or wrong)
time can wipe-out,
or severely reduce
an entire generation
of plant or animal
production. The
increase in predator
to prey relationship
can do the same
thingmore foxes,
less mice, and vice-
versa. It happens all
the time.
In the case of plant control, the
production of seed must be first and
foremost on our minds. If we have
weeds, or any unwanted organism for
that matter (mice, rats, etc) of which
were trying to rid ourselves, we must
consider when that organism produces
its next generation if were to succeed. If a
weed reaches maturity, and subsequently
produces and disperses thousands of
seeds before we do anything about it,
weve really lost the battle for that year.
Killing one, while allowing thousands to
live, is hardly the scenario for success in
this example.

Managing Mosquitoes and Protecting
Pollinators Part I
T
heyve been around for 30
million years. Theyre most active
at 80F and unable to function
below 50F. They can sense the lactic acid
and carbon dioxide from an animals
breath up to 100 feet away. The females
beat their wings 500 times per second
producing a piercing high-pitched whine
that unmistakably and annoyingly
announces her presence.
Considered by most to be an
aggravating nuisance and by many a
disease-carrying adversary, mosquitoes
in their adult and larval stages serve
an important purpose in ecologya
food source to frogs, small fish, aquatic
beetles, dragonflies, damselflies, bats,
birds, turtles, and even other mosquitoes.
Adult mosquitoes nectar on plants and
are pollinators.
Of the more than 2500 species of
mosquitoes worldwide, about 50 are
found in Oregon. Very few species prey
on humans, and, according to Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife, less
than 1% of all mosquitoes carry the West
Nile Virus (WNV). Humans are not the
first choice for female mosquitoes looking
for a protein snack. Wild birds are the
primary hosts.
Zika does not currently exist in the
northwestern U.S., and in Oregon from
2012-2016 there have been only 36
reported cases of humans infected with
WNV. There were zero human infections
2010-2011, and one human deatha
person with a compromised immune
systemwas reported in 2006 according
to The Oregonian. Approximately 80%
of people infected with WNV will show
no symptoms. Up to 20% infected will
display flu-like symptoms, and less than
1% develop serious illness.

The data show that having or not
having a spraying program doesnt
appear to impact case rates. So what are
the other valid reasons for spraying toxic
substances on our wildlife?
According to the Xerces Society for
Invertebrate Conservation, spraying
pesticides is the knee-jerk reaction to
mosquitoessuch simple approaches
rarely work. Data from the last 150
years illustrate that relying on broad-
scale insecticide spraying is not effective
at managing mosquitoes. Insecticides
can also have profound impacts on the
natural world, harming insects that are
food for birds and fish as well as the bees
that pollinate our food.
Monarch butterfly caterpillars have a
significantly lower survival rate when
milkweed (host plant) is sprayed for
mosquitoes. Pesticide applications are also
killing off mosquito predators that would
otherwise keep populations under control.
There are over 125 mosquito species with
documented resistance to one or more
insecticides, according to the CDC. Most
importantly, adulticides have not been
shown to reduce WNV incidence.
Mosquito management insecticides
are linked to human health risks
like cancer, according to Xerces. The
nonprofit, Beyond Pesticides also
highlights the public health hazards
associated with widespread pesticide
exposure. Making informed decisions

on AAUW Garden Tour
Mark your calendar for the 9th-
Annual Medford AAUW Garden Tour
on Saturday, June 10 from 10:00am
to 4:00pm. This years tour features
two Jacksonville gardens, along with
four other diverse landscapes, chosen
to provide you with lots of ideas and
inspiration for your own garden spaces.
The 2017 tour theme is West Side Story
because all six gardens, as well as Caprice
Vineyards, where wine and food from
the Buttercloud Bakery food truck will be
available for purchase, are located on the
west side of the valley.
In Jacksonville, enjoy a lovely and
carefully-planned garden on Laurel
Lane. Each plant in this small space
has been thoughtfully chosen for color
and texture and placed where each can
best thrive as they provide color and
interest throughout the seasons. When
combined with the garden art and
fencing, the result has a secret garden
feel. At the second Jacksonville property
on Singler Lane, the owner has created
the look of an English country garden
with swathes of colorful perennials and
massed hanging baskets of bright, shade-
loving annuals. The backyard focuses on
pollinator-friendly plants.
Two more gardens are located in
Central Point. The garden on Old Stage
Road includes fountains and waterfalls
found along the meandering walkways of
this charming and well-planned garden

The 7th-Annual Jacksonville
Elementary Schools Writers Festival
will be held on Tuesday, May 9th from
6:00-8:00pm in the school gymnasium.
National best-selling author Megan
McDonald will be the keynote speaker
this year. Ms. McDonald is the author
of many beloved books, including the
Judy Moody series and the tales of Judys
younger brother, related in the Stink
series. Jacksonville Pioneers are honored
to welcome her!
The Writers Festival is a school-wide
event, featuring the writing of every
student. During the festival, students
will hear from Ms. McDonald about
her creative process, then meet in small
groups with local authors, journalists,
educators and other writing enthusiasts
who facilitate discussion of each
students writing. Their favorite piece of
writing is also published in an annual
student anthology, making each of our
Jacksonville students a published author.

On McKenzie Drive in Medford,
the home of a landscape designer,
a delightful space demonstrates the
application of sustainability principles
to achieve a low-water-usage garden that
includes food crops. Also in Medford
on Coleman Creek Road is this years
hospitality garden where ticket holders
may enjoy refreshments during the days
tour. Listed on the National Register of
Historic Places, this enchanted estate
is home to a 100-year-old oak as well
as formal gardens filled with fanciful
creatures and sculptures.
Tickets are $20 (free for children under
12) and may be purchased beginning in
early May at any Grange Co-op location,
Blue Door Garden Store in Jacksonville,
Caprice Vineyards in Central Point, Penny
and Lulu Studio Florist in Medford, or
at any of the gardens on the day of the
tour. No ticket is necessary at Caprice
Vineyards. All proceeds from the
tour fund educational and leadership
opportunities for local women and girls.

with their musical talent. This annual
performance kicks-off the summer of
music on the hill. Students also put on
a special performance for students from

will support next year's musical.

Kiwanis Honors Student of the Month
for April
For the month of April, the Kiwanis
Club of Jacksonville honored Jewel
Burgoyne-Russell, a senior at South
Medford High School as student of
the month. Her proud mother is Tanya
Winslow of Medford. Her current grade
point average is 3.9.
She is finishing up her senior year
taking Health, Economics, Contemporary
Issues, Computer Skills, English, and AP
Calculus. She says she loves math!
Jewel participates in choir, theatre, cross
country, and plays on the softball team,
and played in the Rogue Valley softball
invitational. She loves to help care for the
elderly and works at Judys Foster Care
and Horton Plaza. She has also worked
as a volunteer on the Red Cross Blood
Drive and has helped with Hearts with a
Mission, and the Maslow Project.
Her goals include attending Portland
State University to become a Registered
Nurse and then work to care for needy
people and to positively influence those
around her.
As she has grown up, Jewel has been
influenced by her mother, grandmother
and her teachers. Since her father passed
away recently, she has learned to be more
passionate in everything she does. She

A
big part of growing-up and
becoming independent, is
learning how to drive. For
many kids out there attempting to get
their license or pass their permit test,
this is one of the few huge tests weve
had outside of school. Sometimes, our
driving education consists of mom or
dad buckled in tight to the passenger
seat while gripping both sides of the car,
knuckles white. Other times, it is made
up of the parent who, for some reason,
thinks you already know what youre
doing. For others, myself included,
drivers education comes in the form of
a class at RCC. Although it is nice to see
my friends for an extended period of
the day, I can tell this class is going to be
difficult. They dont let just anyone drive
on the roads these days. But then again,
maybe they do. Even in the few driving
outings Ive had on my way to school and
home again, I have already experienced
what it feels like to be tailed when youre
going the speed limit, and what its like
to be honked at when youre a second
too late going when the light turns green.
However, those experiences make me want
to be even more patient when I see others
going slowly down the road.
In addition to this, the class I am
taking is eating up other time. Its not
so different from a sport though, so I

of the congested roads in Medford, I
find driving in Jacksonville much more
enjoyable. The speed limit is a friendly

turn, and generally just practice my
driving skills. Also, scenery is exquisite.
Jacksonville is so welcoming to me when
I see those tall brick buildings stamping a
pattern on the bright blue sky. The signs
are always so colorful and people just
look happier in Jacksonville. Or maybe
Im just happier.
As the final word on this, I would like
to remind you how blessed we all are to
live in such a beautiful place, a place alive
with rich history and fluid color, instead
of the bleak grayness large cities tend to
carry. So go on out and twirl in the breeze
(unless you have allergies, but that goes

Making a Cameo Reappearance
A
lthough some ignore the time-
treasured brooch in favor of
something trendier, the cameo
has always been a fashion statement.
(A brooch is defined as an ornament
fastened to clothing with a hinged pin
and catch.) By always, I mean at least
as far back as the Hellenistic period in
the 3rd Century B.C. The ancient Greeks
artistically carved
gemstones that
showed different
colors in different
layers, such
as agate and
sardonyx. The
cameo was used
largely as signet
rings, earrings
and objects dart.
The Romans
used stones as
well as shell and
ivory and both
cultures depicted
mythological gods,
goddesses, rulers, flowers, and portraits.
Napoleon and Josephine were
intrigued with cameos. Josephine wore a
cameo brooch every day and Napoleon
commissioned artisans to create jewelry
for men and women. The cameo became
the symbol of his reign; even his crown
was decorated with cameos. The cameo
was incorporated into daily life. Shells
and semi-precious stones were carved
to make the cameo available to the
common person.
Later in Victorian England, cameos
were carved from metal, wood, shell,
ivory, and precious stones. Wedgwood
made cameos from Jasperware, and
even clothing had cameo buttons carved
from wood. Queen Victoria loved to
wear highly-embellished cameos with
diamonds and other precious stones; the
cameo became a fashion statement and
symbol of wealth and status.
The upper middle class and the
wealthy obtained cameos on their Grand
Tours through Italy. To wear the piece
was to declare that they had been to Italy.

Friends of Beekman Arboretum

The Friends of the Beekman Arboretum
would like to extend a warm-hearted
thank you to the dozens of people
who participated in the CC Beekman
Arboretums many events this spring,
including the annual clean-up days and
the 24th- Annual Jacksonville Woodlands
Hike-a-Thon.
On March 25, the annual spring
clean-up drew more than twenty-five
volunteers. Young sprouts and seasoned
veterans worked side-be-side, planting
several dozen native plants including
bleeding hearts, snowberry, manzanita
and ferns. Others cleared weeds and
prepped the ground for the installation
and placement of the Linda Brodie
water feature dedication rock and
plaque. The volunteer irrigation crew
unearthed and identified several leaks
in the irrigation system that will help
with water conservation efforts. The
focus of this work day was to prepare
for the Hike-a-Thon that featured the
improvements underway at the CC
Beekman Arboretum.

The Siskiyou Upland Trails Association
is excited to announce that construction
of 4.5 miles of new trail across Anderson
Butte should be
completed in May!
This new trail is the
first phase of the Jack-
Ash Trail that will
eventually connect the
trails in Jacksonville
and Ashland. The
construction schedule
has been affected by
the winter weather,
but the crews have
been diligently
working despite all
the rain and snow.
In addition, SUTA
has been performing
ongoing maintenance
of the Sterling Mine
Ditch Trail, installed
map boxes at all of the trailhead kiosks
for the SMDT, and is coordinating with
BLM for more professional trail crews to
help with maintaining the 30 miles of the
SMDT and its access trails.
The Jack-Ash Trails 4.5 miles of new
trail for hikers, runners, equestrians and
bicyclists combined with existing BLM
roads completes a 15-mile connection
between both ends of the Sterling
Mine Ditch Trail. This creates a 40-mile
loop over and around the Anderson
Butte Complex, and will offer many
opportunities for short and long hikes
and rides. The new trail section offers
a chance to access higher elevations
on Anderson Butte, reaching the top
right below the remnants of the old fire
lookout tower at an elevation of 5100
feet. The trail passes through a beautiful

families and community members for
the annual meeting, hikes and lunch. The
morning began with the dedication of
the Linda Brodie Family Plaque, located
on a beautiful rock next to the water
feature. Gatherers then walked through
the arboretum, viewing native plants
and learning about the improvements
and vision for the arboretum. During the
casual annual meeting, children planted
seeds, painted rocks and completed
scavenger hunts before heading out
on a hike. The one-mile hike was led
by Becka Kem while the three-mile
hike was led by the JWAs Larry Smith.
Everyone finished-off the activities with
snacks and lunch on the Beekman House
lawn, generously provided by Dr. Jason
and Jacque Williams of Jacksonville
Chiropractic Clinic.
It was a fantastic day for Jacksonville,
the Jacksonville Woodlands Association
and the Friends of the CC Beekman
Arboretum.

construction crews, we still will be
having a large community trail work
day on May 13th where you can come
out and help us finish building the
Jack-Ash Trial. If youd like to explore
the new route, check out the views and
wildflowers, and give your shovel or
trail tools some use, wed love to have
you join us! We all own the trails, and
helping create one will give you a feeling
of ownership and pride in what can
be accomplished by getting involved.

Siskiyou Trail Now Open
As our hit-and-miss spring heads
into an uncertain summer, more folks
find themselves on our forest trails. An
unusually-wet winter gives way to drier
days when intrepid hikers take to the
woods to enjoy a walk amidst the carpets
of flowers, cascading streams, and trees
alive with birdsong. Cool crisp mornings
and a need for a sunny perch give way to
warm days, when shade is a blessing. Its
Spring in the Siskiyou Provinces, and our
daily weather becomes an adventure all
in itself. Be prepared for anything and be
certain to have some sunscreen and your
sunglasses in that raincoat pocket.
Our park volunteers have been busy
the last few months sprucing up the
arboretum, clearing storm debris from
our trails and repairing water erosion
damage, adding a foot-bridge at the
confluence of Jackson and Cantrall
Creeks, finishing maintenance on
Siskiyou Trail in Forest Park, (more on
that in a bit) chopping back overhanging
shrubbery and pulling poison oak, as
well as planting over 400 native plants
at the old dam site and throughout
Forest Park. A new botanical area with a
comfortable pedestrian-friendly path is
underway at the lower kiosk in the park.
Siskiyou Trail is open for hikers.
Contouring along the steep hillsides
of the eastern boundary of the park, it
prides itself on its spring flowers and
views of the Siskiyou Crest to the south.
Traveling it from north to south gives a
fuller appreciation of its expansive vistas.
Start out from parking area P2,
up Norling Trail, and cross the new
foot bridge over Jackson Creek at its
confluence with Cantrall Creek. Continue
up across Norling Road onto Ridgeview
The East ART is in the Making!

If the Tin Cup Trail, an old Native
American path, is one of the oldest in
the Applegate, the first miles of the East
ART, recently hacked out by Pulaskis,
McLeods, and mattocks, is one of the
newest. And what a beauty it is.
In late March, trail crews from the
Youth Corps and WorkSource joined
board members of the Applegate Trails
Association to break ground for the
East ART, the first
part of ATA's planned
Applegate Ridge Trail
(the ART). David
Calahan, board chair,
was amazed at how
much work was done
the first day. "The
amount of trail that has
been cut is absolutely
incredible!" he said.
Then came the volunteers, between
26 and 30 grubber-wielding and shovel-
pushing workers on April 1. BLM
employees who had helped usher ATA
through the long paperwork process,
preliminary to that day of actual
construction, were also there. They and
ATA board members came to experience
the beginning of this physical fulfillment
of all that mental work, but what
brought community volunteers, both
that day and April 30?
Andrew Simmons, from Jacksonville,
came because he was excited about
having a new trail so close to home.
Suzie Savoie, a self-described avid
hiker, wanted to be a part of history in
the making, saying, she always wonders
about the history of trails, and who made
them and for what purpose.
Alex Weinbrecht, an ATA board member
who looks forward to horseback riding on
the East ART, loved the way everyone was
working hard and had a lot of enthusiasm.
Trail, cross Cantrall Creek at Golden
Cave, and head up and to the the right, to
meet Reservoir Road at P4. The Siskiyou
Trailhead is at the lower end of the
parking area.
A short climb up an abandoned, but
heavily-eroded motorcycle trail will
bring you to a hikers route up to the
Halls of Manzanita Trail. Save that for
another day, and turn right and follow
Siskiyou Trail through a couple of
gullies, arriving at Siskiyou View Loop
Trail. This half-mile loop leads you up to
a prominent knob with excellent views
of distant Dutchman Peak and Red
Mountain, where the Pacific Crest Trail
comes from California into Oregon. A
firebreak here allows a peek down into
Jacksonvilles old water reservoir, where
young manzanita promise to regrow into
a hilltop thicket.
Returning to Siskiyou Trail proper,
turn left, and as you round each ridge,
the Siskiyou Crest greets you again and
again. More gullies promise thin cascades
of water in the wet season, but come up
dry on the hot days when youd welcome
water the most. Passing a spur down
to Rail Trail, (a shortcut to your car)
continue on, as the view south becomes
more expansive. A series of gentle
switchbacks take you down through bird
bills, fawn lilies, frittillaries, buckwheat,
larkspur; finally arriving at Ponderosa
Snag Trail. A right turn takes you back to
your car at P2. Enjoy the trails.

to help ATA with its
trail. "This East ART is just gorgeous,"
she said. "Seeing that trail segment and
knowing what we are up to on the Jack-
Ash inspires me to get the connection
made between the two trail systems. It's
going to be awesome!"
Andrew pointed out that there were
"people like him," in their 30s and 40s, but
that he "worked alongside a couple of 10-
and 11-year-olds," too. The boy he worked
with was, at first, not thrilled to be there.
Then an ATA trail supervisor put a small
sledge-hammer-like implement in his hand
and suggested he break up rocks. From
then on, he enthusiastically added his own
muscle and strength to those of everyone
else working to build the East ART.

Another Day in Paradise

The signs of spring are upon us! Pear
blossoms are casting their fragrant petals;
daffodils are showing their sunny faces;
green lawns are getting mowed; and
people are sneezing a lot. If youre one
who suffers from chronic sinus trouble
whether caused by allergies or other
environmental factorsyoull be glad to
learn, help is available.
Sinus inflammation, or sinusitis, affects
37 million Americans each year. In some
cases, its temporary, but for many
people, sinusitis is a chronic concern.
Its causes are many, and may be due to
nasal polyps, smoking, or simply the
way your sinuses are constructed. Some
people have narrow drainage ducts that
make them more susceptible for sinus
inflammation or infection.
Recurring symptoms of sinusitis include
throbbing facial pain or pressure, thick
nasal mucus, headaches, trouble breathing
or sleeping, bad breath, irritability,
fatigue and even nausea. The bad news
is that only about 40 percent of chronic
sinusitis patients respond successfully to
medication. That means 60 percent live
with the uncomfortable symptoms.
The good news is there is relief
beyond medication. An innovative
treatment called balloon sinuplasty
clears nasal passages resulting in long-
term relief for both adults and children.
Balloon sinuplasty is performed by an
otolaryngologista specialist in ear,
nose and throat healthgenerally in the
doctors office using a local anesthetic.
A specially-designed catheter is inserted
into the nose to reach the inflamed sinus.
On the end of the catheter is a tiny balloon
thats inflated inside the sinus cavity.
The balloon opens the walls of the sinus
passage allowing blockages to drain and
the normal flow of mucus to resume.
The benefit to balloon sinuplasty is that
its less invasive than traditional sinus
surgeries. Since theres no cutting or
cauterizing, there is very little bleeding,
a shorter recovery time and minimal
discomfort. Many people who undergo
balloon sinuplasty are able to return to
their normal activities within 24 hours.

or 15 years now weve lived in
the same, sweet house, and for
15 years Ive been walking our
dogs along the same street. Yesterday
as I leashed my companions I grumbled
aloud how tired I was of walking this
street every single day, twice a day. As
we slowly made our way down the same
road, passing the same old houses and
same old trees, the words of the poet
David Whyte drifted into my head:
Attention is the discipline of familiarity.
Hes right, of course. Most of us
have a fairly set routine, lives that
cycle through necessary, if tiresome,
quotidian requirements: we get up, eat,
work, cook, clean, run errands and go
to bed every single day. Its easy to fall
into a certain numbness around these
activities. Its easy to take those who live
with us for granted; hardly seeing them
as we pass through the living room,
scarcely listening as they say something
we think we already know. Life-as-
repetitious-routine can all too easily
become wearisome and dull, and herein
lies the grave danger of somnambulating
through our lives.
The antidote to our numbnesswhat
keeps us from falling asleep at the
wheel, as it wereis attention: radical,
conscious, purposeful attention. It
requires conscious effort to be here
now, as Ram Das said. The discipline
of attention means remaining awake
in the midst of sometimes tedious
familiarity and not allowing the mind
to drift into the lazy habit of I know
this path all-too-well. Ive seen it all, heard
it already, done it a thousand times. It
takes work to shake off the ennui and
really look and listen as though you are
experiencing it for the first time.
In her book, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary
Life, Amy Krouse Rosenthal mused about
this art of attention and awareness in the
midst of our ordinary lives.
When I am feeling dreary, annoyed,
and generally unimpressed by life, I
imagine what it would be like to come
back to this world for just a day after
having been dead. I imagine how
sentimental I would feel about the very
things I once found stupid, hateful, or
mundane. Oh, theres a light switch! I
havent seen a light switch in so long! I
didnt realize how much I missed light
switches! Oh! Oh! And lookthe stairs
up to our front porch are still completely
cracked! Hello cracks! Let me get a good
look at you. And theres my neighbor,
standing there, fantastically alive, just
the same, still punctuating her sentences
with you know what Im saying? Why
did that bother me? Its so endearing.
Since most of us are blessed beyond
measure to have lives of extraordinary
abundance and relative ease, it requires
attention to tune back into the life that
is humming all around us, all the time.
It requires us to become more like little
children. Small children are naturally
attuned to the wonder of Life: they
squat to watch the ants parade in a line
across the sidewalk. They watch the
clouds take magical shapes. They poke
and touch and stare with rapt attention
because everything is new. They know
intuitively and instinctively what
Henry Miller wrote: The moment one
gives close attention to anything, even a
blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious,
awesome, indescribably magnificent
world in itself.
Back on my walk, feeling ashamed
and sheepish at my complaining, I
stopped walking and began to pay
attention. I breathed in the wind-
washed air, grateful for lungs that
works so effortlessly. I listened to the
wind in the pines and the birdsongs
that unfolded one after the next, and
looked anew at my old friend walking
amiably along, his back legs wobbling,
sniffing happily at spikes of spring-
green grass. As I gazed into the forest, a
deer, not five yards away, gazed back at
me. Id almost missed seeing that gentle
creature, lost as I was in my shrunken,
self-centered routine.
Attention is presence. It is receptivity.
It is openness. It is love. And the reward
for exercising the discipline of attention
is the immeasurable gift of a so-called
ordinary day: beauty, wonder, connection
and the vibrant joy of Life itself. Shake off
the ennui and look again, look deeply, pay
attention: an indescribably magnificent
world awaits.

Caring for the Caregiver

L
ast fall I participated in a workshop for
caregivers called, Taking Care of You: Powerful
Tools for Caregiving. I highly recommend this
6-week workshop for anyone who is a caregiver. One of the
many tools presented was to be involved with a caregiver
support group. Since I couldnt find a support group in
the area for those without Alzheimers, I started my own.
In this forum, caregivers openly discuss their challenges,
experiences, ask questions, share, and vent without being
judged. Information shared within the group is confidential
and always stays within the group.
What is a caregiver?A family caregiver is anyone
who provides care for an adult family member or friend
who is in poor health, frail, elderly or disabled.
How to care for a caregiver?First and foremosttake
katherine care of yourself. Without this foundation, you wont
ingram m.a. be available to take care of your loved one. Beyond
exercising, eating well and getting plenty of rest, this
includes making sure to get out on occasion and be social.
Meeting with others who have the shared experience
of being a caregiver provides a social outlet with
common understanding. We have all acquired
knowledge and experience during our caregiving
journeys; this is an opportunity to share these resources
in a positive way. Most importantly, the focus of our
support group is on the caregiver and their needs, not
the care recipient. We understand that this is one of the
hardest jobs one can have, and it is vital for people to
have a nurturing and informative support network.

M
y dads biggest memory
of the movie To Kill
a Mockingbird was
the scene where Gregory Peck
had to shoot a rabid dog on the
street. At the time when he relayed this memory to me,
(I was in high school) I thought that was an odd thing to
remember about the movie. But, as I think back, it may
be that, having grown up in 1940s-50s rural Kentucky,
that may have been an experience my dad actually
had to deal with. Rabies has a way of capturing our
imaginationwhether it is in the tear jerker Ol Yeller
(a movie I still refuse to watch) or in the
frightening Cujo, it is a scary disease for
which there is no cure. In 20 years of being in
the veterinary profession, I have never seen
a rabid domestic animal. Yet, for my dad, a
rabid dog walking the street may have been
something he experienced in real life. (It most
certainly is a realistic fear for people living in
less developed countries.) Why is rabies so
much less of a concern at this time?
The simple answer to this is public health
officials working to eradicate the disease.
Veterinarians have been on the forefront of
this work by vaccinating companion animals
for rabies. According to the CDC, at the turn of
the 20th century, 100s of people died annually
in the United States from rabies. Now it
is less than 3, and many of those people
actually contracted the disease outside of the
country. However, rabies is still present in
this countrymostly in wildlife species. In Oregon, bats
and foxes are the most common species that are found
to have rabies. The fact that we rarely see this disease
in companion animals is a testament to the benefit of
vaccine programs. One of the reasons so much effort was
put forth to control rabies is that it is a zoonotic disease.
A zoonotic disease is any infectious disease that can be
transmitted between animals and people. Rabies is the
one that has received the most historical attention and is
still the one most commonly dealt with by veterinarians
in general practice by giving rabies vaccinations.
However, there are plenty of other common zoonotic
diseases that are worth knowing about.
Some zoonotic diseases can be transmitted by directly
touching an infected animal. The most common of
these is ringworm. Ringworm classically shows up as a
round, raised, crusty lesion on the skin. It is caused by
a fungusnot an actual worm. It is easily treatable, but
can be annoying and, in some individuals, cause severe
skin problems and pain. If you suspect your pet, and
more commonly your cat, has ringworm, bring them to
a veterinarian and let us run some simple tests to see if
your cat is indeed infected.
Cat Scratch Fever is another relatively common
zoonotic disease that can be directly transmitted from
cats. This disease is not what Ted Nugent is singing
about in a song by the same name. Cat Scratch Fever
is spread by a cat scratch from a cat infected with
Bartonella henselae. They typically pick this infection
up from fleas. As is the case with ringworm, it is
possible for a cat to have this bacterium without
showing any clinical signs. For this reason, it is very
important to thoroughly clean out any cat scratch
with soap and water. If a cat scratch develops a blister
at the scratch site, the lymph nodes in the area of the
scratch get swollen, or if a fever develops after a cat
scratch, it is best to consult with your physician. To
prevent your cat from getting infected, simply apply a
monthly flea preventative.
Some zoonotic diseases are transmitted by feces.
This does not mean you have to touch feces and then
put your hand in your mouth to get the infection,
though this is a mode of transmission. Sometimes these
infectious agents can hang onto a pets fur for months
and, after petting an animal, someone can get infected.

Examples of these types of agents include roundworms,
hookworms, toxoplasmosis, and cryptosporidium.
Most people tolerate exposure to these infectious agents
without any problems, but the very young, elderly,
and those with weak immune systems are most at risk.
Toxoplasmosis is a concern for pregnant woman as it
can cause fetal birth defects in the first trimester. The
best defense against all these pathogens is to always
wash your hands after cleaning up feces, a litter box,
and after petting your pet before you put your hands
in your mouth. (Obviously, if you accidentally touch
feces, wash your hands right away.) Another important
defense against toxoplasmosis in particular is to
wear gloves when gardening, (as cats can defecate in
gardens) and to wash hands after handling raw meat
(another source of toxoplasmosis infection, and, for
that matter, other zoonotic diseases like Salmonella).
Another important method to control hookworm and
roundworm infections is to have your pet on a monthly
dewormer. The monthly heartworm preventatives
provide this protection.
Some zoonotic diseases are transmitted through
vectorsnamely insects such as ticks and mosquitoes.
The most well known of these is Lyme disease, but
other common examples include Rocky Mountain
spotted fever and West Nile virus. These diseases are
not directly transmitted from an animal to a person,
so, if you have a dog sick with Lyme disease, they will
not directly transmit it to you. However, it is possible
that your pet can bring infected ticks into your
household. This is one of the reasons we recommend
monthly flea and tick control (although, the most
important reason we recommend monthly control is
for your pets health).
In addition to rabies, there is another zoonotic disease
that we vaccinate for, and that is leptospirosis. This is
a bacterium that is spread in urine. It can affect both
the liver and kidneys and can lead to meningitis in
people. As it is spread in urine, it is always a good
idea to thoroughly wash your hands after coming into
contact with urine. Ideally, one would wear gloves
when cleaning up a urine spill. Unlike some of the other
diseases mentioned, dogs do not shed this bacterium
unless they are showing signs of illness.
Pets bring us great joy and add many more health
benefits than detriments to our lives. In most cases,
the risk of zoonosis is very low, but it is valuable
to be aware that there are risks and to do things to
minimize those risks. This is best done by keeping
your pet on a monthly flea and tick preventative, a
monthly de-wormer, (again, heartworm preventatives
cover this) maintain their vaccinations, wear gloves
when picking up pet messes, and washing your hands
after handling your pets, especially before you eat.

Shirley acted in the popular Meet
the Pioneers cemetery performances
eight times, and Iris also did a cameo
performance. In addition, Shirley has
been a Cemetery History Saturday
and Tuesday Night Strolls docent. For
four years she was the mainstay narrator
for the Monday Jacksonville Trolley
Tours and enticed Iris to do the same for
a short period. Iris has been a SMART
reader and is famous for her pies with a
pie-a-month for a year going for $450 at
her church auctions. Shirley completed
two church mission trips, one to Mexico
and one to Honduras.
While their friendship did not start
until 2001, they have crowded much
activity into the past 16 years. Since
they both have an adventuresome spirit,
they have made numerous car trips,
with Shirley driving and Iris navigating,
to Arizona, Idaho, Washington and
California, including 52 trips to Shirleys
condo in Sunriver. They traveled by
train to Iowa, took two cruises, one to
Australia and New Zealand and another
to the Mediterranean and they traveled
with a church group to Israel. In 2009,
after deciding to take a camping trip
along the Rogue River, they practiced
for two nights in Iriss backyard.
They pride themselves on knowing
each others families well and are
welcomed into both families. They have
most of their evening meals together,
because, it is so much nicer to share a
meal with someone than to eat
alone, and it is much healthier.
Iris has had a number of health
issues that has slowed her down
some but has not deterred her
spirit. She says that, After
being diagnosed in December
with congestive heart failure,
I spent two weeks thinking
about death, and then one day
I decided that Im going to get

her mother took rooms at a boarding
house in San Mateo, and 25-year-old
Dorland turned back to
her art career. In March,
she displayed several
of her paintings in a
local gallery. On April

suddenly, it was over.

to say, My goal is to stay healthy so I
can see a great-grandchild, whenever
that may come.
Shirley, who has two granddaughters
and one grandson, wants to enjoy life
as much as I can and keep busy trying
to do something productive every day.
Jacksonville living agrees with them or
as Shirley says, Jacksonville is the most
wonderful place where opportunities
for quality living abound, or as Iris
sums it up, I am blessed to live in
Jacksonville.
While Iris and Shirley have much in
common, they are different in many
ways. Iris is easy-going with a just
let it happen attitude while Shirley
is a meticulous planner and record
keeper. Shirley loves to write letters
and cards and keep in contact with old
friends, but Iris would rather spend
her time watching sports and doing
crossword puzzles. Iris reads the paper
word for word while Shirley just skims
it. Iris loves to shop, especially for
clothing, while Shirley shops only out
of necessity. These differences only
enhance their friendship or as Shirley
says, We celebrate our differences.

An Eclectic Season on the Hill
Eclectic is the
word that I used to
describe the 2017
Britt Line-up at our
April 6th Season
Announcement
party, where we
had a record-
breaking crowd
of over 250
upper-level members, Business Partners,
and press come together to celebrate
the launch of another spectacular Britt
season. We revealed many first time acts
to Britt, as well as several of your favorite
returning performers.
In recent years, you might have noticed
that the Britt Board of Directors and staff
has not been afraid to try new things. So
when we had the chance to bring back
Rodrigo y Gabriela, and the only available
date was smack dab in the middle of the
Orchestra season, we called Teddy! All of
us know that Teddy Abrams is not a man
to shy away from trying new things, either.
Hence, Teddy understood immediately
that this internationally-famous Mexican
acoustic guitar playing duo, influenced by
everything from classical to heavy metal,
was a perfect fit. He even encouraged
Britt to provide tickets for his orchestra to
attend the concert.
Moving on, who doesnt like at least
one Prince song? In the wake of Princes
death last year, his iconic back-up band,
The Revolution, reunited for a trio of
tribute shows in the musicians native
Minneapolis. In February, the group
announced it will reconvene once again for
a string of US tour dates to include concerts
in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and

Randall Theatre Company
A
s the Randall Theatre embarks
on its new adventure, I want to
personally thank the Jacksonville
community for being so supportive.
As we take this step new step, I
feel its important for the community
to know about the namesake of the
Randall Theatre, my late brother,
Randall Joseph Downward.
My brother was a magician both
literally and figuratively. He could sing
and act; he was a filmmaker, and an
electronics genius. Randy loved the art
and illusion of magic, was an incredible
artist and had an engineers tinkering
mind. Most importantly, he had a gentle
spirit. I'm sure that had he lived on, he
would have been either a Hollywood
director or have been good friends with
Bill Gates and/or Steve Jobs, helping
them make computers.
I was eight-years-old when he passed
awayhe was only 18. I don't remember
long, intellectual conversations with
him. What I do remember was how
talented he was, how humble he was
with how much talent he had and how
much he shared his gifts with others.
He would entertain sick children at
the Shriners Children's Hospital in San
Francisco with his illusions, just to see

tracks like So Easy. His platinum-
selling first album, The World from
the Side of the Moon, includes the
upbeat love song Gone, Gone, Gone,
which is sure to be a wedding song for
Phillips fans for years to come.

very strong shows that are going to
sell-out reserved seats long before public
