Exam

The module examination consists of a written examination of

90 min duration = 90 points

60 min. closed book

30 min. open book (only Dr. Garibaldi section Not Strut-and-
Tie)

The closed book examination comprises 45 min. regarding

Strut-and-Tie, and 15 min. related to concrete design theory.

The open book exam is for the portion of the concrete design
material taught by Dr. Garibaldi, and will not include the Strut-
and-Tie content of the course.

Lectures

Lectures (as PDF in a text format or power point presentation)

will be posted in Opal at the end of the week. Handout to
write personal notes are already posted in OPAL. Each student
shall print hand outs or lecture documents before coming to
class. The lecture documents will be updated by 10:00 AM on
the day of lecture.

Research Focus at the Institute of Concrete Structures

are:

Textile reinforced concrete

Multi-axial strength
Bond between textile and concrete
Concrete under impact load
Modelling with discrete elements

We offer project work and masters theses in these

different research fields

BIWE-01 Design of Concrete Structures

The module offers an introduction to the maintenance

principles of bridge and building management.

Inspection, investigation, testing, and condition assessment

of existing reinforced concrete structures are covered in
these lectures.

The capacity calculation of old buildings and bridges is

covered, as well as advanced calculation methods in order to
estimate additional available load bearing capacity of the
section or the structure.

The participants should be able to assess existing reinforced

concrete structures and to design and calculate necessary
remedial activities of these structures.
