Importance of technology:
This project could not be completed without technology and the appropriate software. MovieMaker Live is an excellent tool
for students to use. After taking a day to teach and train the students on how to use the software, it could be used as a learning
activity for various projects throughout the school year. Without this technology, students would have to create something
tangible to present their information on. While this is perfectly fine learning activity for the group of students creating it, it is not
as engaging for the rest of the class while that group is presenting it. Also, videos could not be incorporated into the project,
leaving out opportunities for the students to witness examples and perspectives from the actual time period and/or events.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
There may be some issues regarding internet safety while students are researching information, photographs, and
videos on their topic. To prevent dangerous situations regarding those searches, the instructor should bookmark
websites she knows are safe to use to research information, photographs, and videos on specific topics. She should also
advise the students not to put their last names or any other personal information in the credits portion of their video
because it will be posted on the classroom blog where it will be seen. Even though the classroom blog would password
protected, someone in the class could still show it to someone who might abuse that information.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity:
This is a great activity to get students engaged and involved in their own learning. They will be more motivated to create
meaningful projects because they will be in charge of their learning and the rest of the class. They will also feel this way because
they know it will be shown in front of the class and also posted to the classroom blog. The students will be motivated to actively
watch the other groups videos for two reasons: they know that they will want others to watch their video with respect, so they
will watch the other groups with respect as well, and because the videos will be fun and engaging because their classmates made
them and because they will incorporate appealing multimedia elements such as music and video.
