Master in patternmaking
POST DEGREE/POST EXPERIENCE COURSE
MENSWEAR
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
Our course Master in Patternmaking Menswear" aims to meet the high demand for training excellence in the field of
patternmaking for mens clothing, where the patternmaker is not only at the heart and centre of the planning process but
also plays a big part in resolving problems related to sewing the garments. 2013 will see the second edition of this course
following on from the success of the previous year. All our Master courses are reserved for those who hold a degree from
a university or fashion school or have worked in the fashion industry as a patternmaker.
Like all our courses in patternmaking, this course clearly reflects the philosophy and history of Istituto Secoli, which
since it was founded in 1934, has taught generations of patternmakers and tailors that have helped create the
uniqueness of Made in Italy in the fashion world.
The patternmaker is the figure in a fashion company that interprets and "puts on paper" the ideas of the designer,
transforming a sketch into a project (the pattern) ready to be transferred to fabric. The patternmaker is fundamental to
the design process that leads to the creation of a collection. The strength of Italian patternmakers is one of the key
ingredients for Italian supremacy in the field of fashion.
The tailor is the pinnacle of the clothing world; it is from the tailor that all other professions in the fashion world have
evolved. In companies that produce prt--porter it is the tailor (prototype machinist) who physically realizes the work
and ideas of the designer and patternmaker. The entire design process is contained within the walls of a classic tailors
shop, starting from the clients measurements the tailor is able to design, fit and sew (with all its intricate complexities) a
complete suit, achieving a level of quality, precision and detail that is only achievable with the human hand and years of
experience.
The course focuses on the study of men's clothing, expanding on every aspect of both the creative and technical side,
disproving the assumption that the difficulties encountered when designing mens fashion are similar to those
encountered when designing womens wear or childrens wear.
If you chose this course together we will cover these three main educational goals:
Firstly: the study of the Secoli Method, starting with the basics, progressing to an in-depth study of the design
and construction techniques (patternmaking and sewing) of garments. The course provides a comprehensive study
(but at the same time creative and challenging) of men's clothing. Beginning with the study of formal jackets and
trousers (studying industrial and sartorial methods), followed by sportswear (jackets), shirts, street-wear (cut
knitwear and jeans) concluding with tailor made garments, studying made-to-measure and hand stitching.
Secondly: the study of necessary tools needed to become productive in a short period of time once you find
yourself in the work place. For this reason during the year students study the major CAD patternmaking software
systems commonly used in companies, and participate in the Secoli Fashion Show with clothes completely
designed and assembled by themselves.
Lastly: a true culmination and synthesis of the above two, is to educate and refine your spirit for research and
experimentation with innovative cuts, fabric combinations and accessories. The outcome of the third goals is
materialized with a mini made-to-measure collection (3 to 6 outfits), complete with master patterns, prototypes
and finished prototype garments, which form part of the final thesis, then discussed in front of the examination
panel.
There will be the possibility for students who complete the Master course to undertake an internship in a company in the
fashion sector. Dolce e Gabbana, Alberta Ferretti, Gilmar, Versace, Vaprio Stile, Gucci, are some of the companies where
Istituto Secoli sends students.
