Erozkan, Atilgan.

The Effect of Communication Skills and Interpersonal Problem Solving

Skills on Social Self-Efficacy. Educational Sciences: Theory and Practice, vol. 13, no.

2, 2013, pp. 739-745.

This source is about how people feel about their ability to communicate effectively. This

will be helpful to me because it is important for my research to understand how confident

our society is today with using interpersonal communication in day to day life. I will use

this source to develop my thesis that we are losing interpersonal communication and it

must be maintained and this study will help prove this.

Ledbetter, Andrew. The Past and Future of Technology in Interpersonal Communication Theory

and Research. Communication Studies, vol. 65, no. 4, 2014, pp. 456-459.

This study is about the history of interpersonal communication which will be important

for discussing how communication has changed over the years due to technology. This

will help me prove that there is a direct link between the increase in technology and the

decrease in interpersonal communication for this generation. This article goes into how

Facebook and other social media websites are causing the decrease in face to face

communication, something I definitely want to talk about in my paper.

Harmon, Patricia. Does Texting Affect Emotional Intelligence? T+D, vol. 67, no. 7, 2013, pp.

70-71.

This article is about the role electronic communication has on personal relationships. It

discusses how electronic communication allows filtering of our dialogue by being able to

spend as much time as possible to send a response. Also communicators often hide

behind their computers which creates a vail over reality because the other person has no

1
idea if what they are saying is true since they are not face-to-face. This creates problems

for when the face-to-face communication actually has to be initiated. I will use this to

discuss how people in my generation are making the problem more severe because they

are hiding behind their screens and not speaking in a physical social environment.

Turkle, Sherry. Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each

Other. Basic Books, 2011.

This book is about how recently we are glued to technology quite frequently even when

we have the company of others. We can be eating out with others and still be on our

phones instead of engaging in conversation. This will help validate one of my points on

how technology is the main cause for the lack of person to person communication.

Turkle, Sherry. The Flight From Conversation. New York Times, 21 April 2012.

The author of this article has studied the patterns in which humans communicate and the

impact technology has had on it for thirty years. She has lots of knowledge and

experience to help my argument. She speaks about how technology has changed not only

how we communicate but who are as human beings. This is important for my paper

because this is the prominent issue I want to discuss. She brings up interesting ideas that

can spark some solutions for my paper that I will need to figure out.

Duck, Steve. Onward and Upward: Some Reflections On the Past and the Future of Interpersonal

Communication. Communication Studies, vol.65, no. 4, 2014, pp. 460-464.

This article is reflecting on the past of interpersonal communication and how humans

have progressed to todays form of interpersonal communication. The history of face to

face communication will help me understand what led up to the decline there is currently.

Steve Ducks predictions for the future will also help me elaborate on how serious this

2
issue is and what action humans can take to try to maintain the value of face-to-face

communication.

Treher, Elizabeth. Interpersonal Communication: Challenges and Solutions: Strategies to

Improve Organizational and Individual Communication. Laboratory Medicine, vol. 39,

no. 5, 2008, pp.261-264.

This article is about the struggles with effectively communicating with others. It gives

solutions and advice on how to better communicate in all aspects of life. This will help

me formulate my own solutions to this major problem of sustaining an important factor of

our daily lives. Communication is changing regardless of whether we think that is a good

or bad thing and there needs to be people finding solutions to the barriers that technology

is creating on interpersonal communication.

Hwang, Yoosun. Is Communication Competence Still Good For Interpersonal Media?

Computers in Human Behavior, vol. 27, no. 2, 2011, pp. 924-934.

This study is about the indirect and direct effects of communication competence through

media and social atmospheres. It talks about the similarities and differences of media and

the physical social atmospheres. A physical social atmosphere means speaking face-to-

face rather than using technology to communicate. Being in a physical social

environment is quite different than speaking through the various devices we use. I will

use this and explain how the similarities and differences can be used to find an effective

solution so future generations can balance technology and speaking in a physical

environment.

Nelson, Donna. Enhancing Interpersonal Communication: Positive Mood Effects. Social

Behavior and Personality: An International Journal, vol. 44, no. 9, 2016, pp.1535-1539.

3
This article is about how having a positive attitude or mood can enhance the

experience of interpersonal communication. Interpersonal connections can have a lot of

factors that go into making it a great conversation or experience. By using this article and

the research in it I can show how having a positive, happy mood can also help the issue.

Semenescu, Georgiana. Interpersonal Communication. Annals of the Constantin Brancusi

University of Targu Jiu-Letters and Social Sciences Series, vol. 1, no. 4, 2016, pp. 159-

161.

This article is describing what interpersonal communication is and why it is important

and necessary for humans. This will be a good entry source into my paper because I can

use this source to help the reader understand clearly and completely what my topic is. It

defines and explains the value of interpersonal communication which will be an

important starting point for my paper.
