SURFS UP
TIME TO HEAD OUT AND
HARNESS THE POWER OF THE
OCEAN TO RIDE THOSE WAVES!
Surfing starts
The first people to ever sur f are thought to
have been the Polynesians, who were tip-
top sur fers from the islands of the Pacific.
They were discovered riding waves on
mysterious boards of wood in the late
1700s by the famous explorer Captain
James Cook. It is thought that
Polynesian fishermen had been
using this tactic to ride
back to shore for centuries.
EXTREME EARTH
Not just for fun!
The Polynesians saw sur fing as more than just the
recreational spor t that we view it as today, they
saw it as a religious ritual, a tradition and a contest
in which they would demonstrate their strength.
In Hawaii, kings used sur fing as a way to show
who exactly was in charge, and only they would
have the best boards car ved from the best trees.
surfing spreads
Sur fing is a ver y popular spor t, and many claim
that its popularity grew in the early 1900s thanks
to the Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic
swimmer and sur f fanatic who travelled to Australia
and mainland America to spread the love of sur fing
outside his native Hawaii.
Now you can enjoy sur fing all over the world,
with ever y countr y of fering a completely unique
sur fing experience; you can brave the large swells
on Australias Gold Coast, or enjoy the cr ystal blue
waters of White Beach, Okinawa, Japan. Wherever
you go there is a sur fing location for you to star t
your journey into sur f-dude-dom!

TRUEVILLE
LIARS
PARADISE
There are t wo small towns, one of which is
inhabited by people who always lie, and the
other by people who always tell the truth. The
first is called Liars Paradise and the second
is called Trueville.
A man who wants to visit Trueville comes
to a crossroad, and, to his amazement, sees
t wo road signs pointing in opposite directions
but both saying To Trueville.
After careful consideration, he decides that
this is quite logical: the correct sign has been
put up by the authorities of Trueville, and the
other by the town council of Liars Paradise.
The latter should of course say Liars
Paradise, but since they are liars they have
put up a sign that also tells a lie.
