Garden party hits the right note

THERE was plenty to see and do at the Handbridge St Mary’s Church garden party.
Visitors were entertained by a jazz band and children enjoyed the giant bouncy castle

author Daisy

A local author, Daisy Dawes visited St. Mary’s Nursery School last month. Daisy
had her first book, Get Ahead Fred, published this year. The Dragonfly and Butterfly
groups and their teacher, Mrs Longhurst enjoyed the story so much that they wrote
a letter to Daisy, inviting her to come to visit the nursery. They had lots of fun with
Daisy, who read her book and showed the children the models that she used to
illustrate it. Because Fred loves hats, the children sang him a song about different
sorts of hats and then had a go at designing a new hat to add to his collection.

Make use of the community centre
SO many Westminster Park residents are not aware of the existence of the community centre.
If you are one of them the centre is located on Five Ashes Road next to the school and is open
to all residents who would like to join.
They have a variety of user groups such as pre-school, Weight Watchers, bridge club, ballet,
belly dancing and kick boxing.
New members are always welcome so if you enjoy having a drink with friends, or meeting new
ones, perhaps you enjoy playing the fruit machines, pool or darts, or watching sports events on
large screen. There is a monthly Quiz Night (last Saturday of every month), and other events
include BBQs, bingo, disco nights, race nights, charity events and the New Year’s Eve Party.
The joining fee is £2 with an annual fee of £10. Membership forms are available over the
bar from Gill Williams or one of her staff during opening hours: evenings from 7.30 pm and

ARE YOU SUN SMART?
This month is a reminder to wear your
sun protection every day and not just
when the sun is shining! Remember that
daylight exposure is as damaging to the
skin as tanning.
UVA rays are responsible for most skin
cancers and the cause of the signs of ageing
i.e. wrinkles and brown age spots. UVB rays
are responsible for the burn or redness to
the skin. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause
cancer so wearing an SPF containing protec-
tion from both is essential.
An SPF15 blocks just over 93% of UVB
rays, whilst an SPF30 blocks 96.6% of UVB
rays. Unfortunately an SPF50 still does not
give you 100% protection and contains a
higher level of chemicals that can cause ir-
ritation to the skin.
Sun screens containing vitamins A and C
protect the skin additionally. Vitamin A can
protect the DNA from damage. Vitamin
C helps protect the skin from free radical
damage resulting in less pigmented skin
problems like brown spots to frequently
exposed areas such as face, neck, décolleté,
forearms and the backs of hands. People
who have a higher intake of vitamin C in their
diet seem to have fewer problems with skin
pigmentation. Vitamin C applied topically will
give added protection.
Young children and babies are most at risk
and must be completely protected. It is dur-
ing the formative years that the damage is
done. The evidence of that sun damage will
not show itself until later in life.
What a nice night for an evening.
Those of you prone to acne outbreaks, do
you find that your skin is more spotty during
warmer weather? The reason for this is that
your skin produces 80% more oil in the heat!
So do not try to dry the skin in the sun, as
two weeks after sun exposure you will suffer
a major eruption. Use oil free products on
your skin, (cleansing at least twice daily), oil
free sun block and use a gentle facial scrub 3
times a week. Try to keep cool, particularly at
night. Do not sleep on your stomach or with
your face in contact with the pillow. Sleeping
on your back will keep your face coolest!

Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.

August can be a difficult month to find
fresh flowers and foliage. This year the
dry spring and early summer has stressed
many plants.
So if you want colour in August, try perennials
such as the red hot pokers (Knipofia) in red
yellow or orange colours. They range in size
from about 18 inches to 5 feet tall depending
on the variety and will withstand a hot summer.
Phlox are also in flower at this time of year
with scented white, red or pink flowers on tall
stems.
I would also cut back the stems on perennials
that have finished flowering such as Catmint
(Nepeta), Perennial Cornflower (Centaura
montana) and perennial geraniums. You often
find that with some rain, the plants will produce
new growth and a second flush of flowers in
autumn.
Pots of plants can start to look a bit tired so
consider something different, maybe a single
grass such as Acorus. As you can see from
the photograph, a well grown grass plant will
look very striking in a pot and not need much
attention other than watering from time to time.
Why don’t they make the whole plane out of that black box stuff.
If you have a shrub that flowered in spring,
think about planting a summer flowering
clematis to grow through it for colour later in
year. Clematis Perle d’ Azur has large blue
flowers in July and August and is happy
scrambling through a shrub. Cut it back to
about 2ft in late winter or early spring and it
will grow back each year. Clematis Viticella
varieties are robust plants for summer
flowering on growth made this year. So prune
back to 2ft in winter or spring. Varieties such as
Huldine (white) or Etoile Violette (purple) are
readily available.
Keep vegetables well watered and give them
a good soaking once or twice a week rather
than a little bit of water every day. I prefer to
water plants by watering can so I know that
each plant will get a measured amount of
water and that it will sink down into the soil
to the roots. Tomatoes and courgettes will
get a can per plant. Net cabbages and other
brassicas to prevent cabbage white butterflies
from laying eggs on the leaves.

Young scientists’ night at the museum

Year 7 students from Queen’s Park
High School spent the night at the
Science Museum in London. This
was the culmination to an exciting
project working with a team from
the Science Museum, sponsored by
Shell
It aims to enthuse and inspire young
people about science. 25 students
who had shown a keen interest were
selected to take part in workshops
and complete the ‘Launch Pad
Challenge’.
The Launch Pad Project is an annual
event at Queen’s Park for Year 7
students. It is run by the Science
Museum in London and sponsored
by Shell UK. The project sets
two challenges which have to be
completed in eight weeks. This includes ‘The Launch Box Challenge’. Students are given a box of
material with which they have to a build a chain reaction contraption. Our students chose to design
and build a water wheel that caused a domino effect, spelling out the name of the school. Working
alongside science teacher Mrs Prydden the team of Year 7 students built their contraption and the
working design was filmed by the Science Museum.
The final part of the project saw the students visit the Science Museum in London and spend the
night in the Space Exploration Gallery. At the Science Museum they joined 20 schools from across
the UK. Once inside they were directed to the unconventional sleeping quarters in the space
gallery! Students took part in a number of exciting workshops that looked at how Science is used.
For the second year running, QPHS won the Best Behaved School Award.

Gulliver
the rhino
unveiled
Queen’s Park High School
a Specialist Visual Arts
College has unveiled its
Rhino who has been named
‘Gulliver’. The design is
in black and white to give
maximum impact and shows
silhouettes of students
alongside the words “The
man who has no imagination
has no wings “.
The inspiration behind
the design comes from the
story of Gulliver’s travels.
However, the students seen
on the Rhino are setting him
free rather than tying him
down. Each silhouette is of
an actual child and there
is a representation from
all year groups at Queen’s
Park and its partner primary
schools. The silhouettes
were produced during a
master class using digital
imaging and then painted
onto the rhino. Students Art teacher Amy Swann with Year 7 students and
from Overleigh St Marys Gulliver the Queen’s Park Rhino
CE Primary School, Lache
Primary School and Belgrave
Primary School took part in workshops so they could also add their images to be seen on the
rhino.
Amy Swann, who led this project, said “I am really pleased with Gulliver, the final outcome
looks fantastic! It has taken a great deal of planning and hard work to achieve the finished
artwork. The students who have contributed have been a pleasure to work with and are a real
asset to their schools. It’s been a real team effort, thank you to those involved.”
Gulliver will go on display alongside the other rhinos in Chester Cathedral. He will then go on
permanent display outside the school.
