3.0 Methodology
3.1 Safety Precautions
1. All operating procedures and instructions must be read carefully before operating

any unit.
2. Do not touch the blower while it is running to avoid injuries.
3. Do not turn on the power if the unit is damaged or partially wet.
4. Do not come into contact with the hot component of the unit.
5. Keep hands dry while using glass apparatus to pour water into the make-up tank

and be extra cautious to ensure no water is spilled onto the electrical parts.
3.2 Standard Operating Procedures

General Start-Up Procedures

1. Valves V1 to V6 are closed while valve V7 is made partially open.

2. The load tank is filled with distilled water by removing the make-up tank. The

make-up tank is replaced onto the load tank and the nuts are lightly tightened.

Then, the make-up tank is filled in with distilled water.

3. Distilled water is added to the wet bulb sensor reservoir.
4. The temperature set point is set to 50 C.
5. The water heater power is set to 1.0 kW and the water is heat up until

approximately 40 C.
6. The pump is switched on and set the water flowrate to 2.0 LPM. A steady state

operation is obtained where the water is distributed and flowing uniformly through

the packing.
7. The unit is run for about 20 minutes, for the float valve to correctly adjust the level

in the load tank. Make-up tank is refilled as required.

General Shut-Down Procedures

1. Heater is switched off and water is allowed to circulate through the cooling tower

system for 3-5 minutes until water is cooled down.

2. Fan, pump and power supply is switched off.
3. Water is completely drained off from the unit if it is not used.
3.3 Experimental Procedure

End State Properties of Air and Steady Flow Equations

1. The system is set under the following conditions for about 15 minutes.
Water flow rate: 2.0 LPM
Air Flow: Maximum
Cooling Load: 1.0 kW
2. The make-up tank is filled with distilled water and the initial water level is

recorded.
3. The stopwatch is started to determine the make-up water supply in an interval of

10 minutes.
4. In this 10-minute interval, a few sets of measurements such as temperatures,

differential pressure, air flow rate and heater power is recorded. Then, the mean

value is obtained for calculation and analysis.

5. The quantity of make-up water that has been supplied during the time interval is

determined by noting the height reduction in the make-up tank.

5.2 Recommendations

At the end of the cooling tower lab experience, several recommendations are generated

to improve the results of the experiment.

1. Routinely check and replace the rubber pipes to ensure there is minimal-to-no water

leakages and consistent water flowrates.

2. Provide a humidity recording devices to quantify accurately the measurements of the

actual humidity of air in the lab, instead of assuming the humidity from the manual.
3. Use auxiliary heaters to increase the temperature difference between the return water

from the water heater and the cold supply water, as this will increase the enthalpy

difference and prevent the chances of obtaining a negligible enthalpy difference.
