Good morning, Mrs. Lee Ai Ling and everyone present here today. I recently took part in a workshop, How to Do Well in

English Literature. I gained invaluable knowledge from the workshop and would like to share it with you.

The main thrust of the workshop was on how to enjoy and gain maximum benefits from English Literature, which would

enhance students grasp of the three components of literature and consequently, enable them to perform well in the subject.

Thus, we were told not to confine our readings to the prescribed text, poem or short story. Rather, students were

encouraged to read major and popular classics and plays by famous English figures such as Shakespeare, Jane Austen and

Charles Dickens. This will not only enable us to understand and love the classics, it would also help us gain knowledge of

English literary traditions. Reading also helps to improve writing skills which is a major problem among students.

The speakers also encouraged us to watch movies or series based on classical novels and plays of the famous authors.

Aside from gaining invaluable knowledge, students would be able to expand their vocabulary and fluency in the English

Language. we were also told to watch more educational programmes.

Another way to do well in English Literature is to form focus groups or engage in discussions with friends. We can discuss

the particular themes or literary merits of a certain book or movie. This would enable us to get a good grasp of the literature

component. Apart from that, we should practise writing more often and seek assistance to evaluate our work. Doing so will

help improve our writing skills in English Literature.

Finally, we were urged to use English at home and in school. Most of us are fluent in Bahasa Melayu but lack similar skills

in English. Regular usage of the language would provide us the confidence and ability to speak and write well.

I would like to end my speech by thanking everyone present here for their time and attention. I hope my friends have

gained some helpful tips on how to improve their performance in English Literature.
Thank you.
