Standards (What do you want students to know and be able to do? What knowledge, skills, and strategies do you
expect students to gain? Are there connections to other curriculum areas and subject area benchmarks? )

1.a.1 Students will cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and
Content Standards secondary sources, attending to such features as the date and origin of the information.
3b. Students will evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of
NETS*S Standards: information, media, data or other resources.

Overview

In this lesson, students will learn to determine the difference between credible and non-credible sources. Each
student will use a computer in order to search for historical based sources, and then determine whether or not
they are sufficient for use in their essay. Then, students will learn how to separate those sources into the two
categories that include primary and secondary sources. Later, students will learn to judge how and when to use
primary and secondary in their essays.

Essential Questions

What makes a credible source? What is the difference between a primary and secondary source? When should a
source be used?

Assessment

1. Students will find a total of three primary and secondary sources.

2. Students will exchange credible source lists and evaluate others using a given rubric.
3. Students will then use constructive criticism to better their understanding of sources.
4. The instructor will then use the same rubric to assess and give students a grade.

Resources

1. Students will be given a computer or place to access one.

2. Students will access information from an online database of the instructors choice.
3. Students will then gather their sources from a variety of safe and informative websites.

Instructional Plan
Preparation

1. Students need basic computer knowledge/skills.

2. Students need to have a knowledge of how to operate search engines and databases.
3. Students need to need to have the knowledge of how to operate Microsoft office programs such as Word.

Management

1. Students will spend time in the schools library/computer lab where they will have access to a printer.

Instruction and Activities

Students will be given a detailed handout of the lesson explaining their objectives and skills necessary to
complete it. The library will be an excellent place for students to complete the assignment, as they will have ample
resources. The instructor will be able to monitor the students and give assistance as I will be in the library as well.
The technology used will give students a further understanding of computer programs and research skills. This will
greatly help them in further schooling and possible careers later in life.

Differentiation

Students will form groups of 3-5 students to ensure that they have all tools necessary to complete the assignment.
Independent learning and research will be the primary learning style, though groupwork will be encouraged. The
students will be given a list of approved databases prior to research. The instructor will always be available for
further assistance.

Closure and Reflection

Students will be asked to complete the following reflection upon turning in the assignment.

1. Was this assignment easy to understand?

2. Were you given the technological tools necessary to complete the assignment?
3. Were you given enough time to complete this assignment?
4. Was the instructor helpful in your completing this assignment?
5. What changes, if any, would you recommend the instructor make to this assignment?

The students will turn in their final assignment along with an outline of their essay to be turned in at a later date.
The students will then be given a short quiz that consists of determining what a primary and secondary source is,
and what makes a source credible.
