UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


This lesson plan is part of a unit plan on major cities, bodies of water, and landforms in the U.S.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a computer, the learner will proceed to use Google Earth to locate major cities, bodies of water, and
landforms in the U.S. in 30 minutes with 100% participation.
Given a computer, the learner will proceed to use http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/ to play educational games
labeling a map of the U.S. in 30 minutes with 100% accuracy.
Given a quiz, the learner will proceed to answer the questions related to the standard in 15 minutes with 100%
accuracy.
Using the computer, the learner will create a graphic organizer that will show where major cities, bodies of water,
and landforms are located in the U.S. in 45 minutes with 100% accuracy.

Student Participation
The goal of this lesson is for students to enhance their knowledge about the locations of major cities, landforms,
and bodies of water within the U.S. It also enhances the students ability to apply technology to their education
and learn how to properly use different technology resources.

2.17 Locate major cities, bodies of water, mountain ranges and rivers in the United States

Cities: Chattanooga, Knoxville, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City,

Bodies of Water: Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
Rivers: Colorado, Cumberland, Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio
Mountain Ranges: Alaska Range, Appalachian, Rockies

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
The student will demonstrate a concrete understanding of where the cites and landforms are within the United
States.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600
This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 2.0
We will continue to learn major cities, landforms, and bodies of water such as oceans, capitols, and the Grand
Canyon.
The lesson or technology use will be modified to meet the needs of diverse learners.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction:
Begin by telling students they are explorers and that they are going to travel the country to locate
secret spots within the U.S.
Proceed to ask the class if anyone can name a major city, body of water, or landform in the U.S.
Assign each explorer a computer, and direct the explorer to the computers
Present a screencast to show the explorer how to use Google Earth and kids National Geographic
Allow the explorers to work independently to locate the secret spots.
After a brief review, give students quiz
Provide another screencast on how to create a Graphic Organizers
Allow explorers to create Graphic Organizer
