Cave Dwellers Unit (Day 3)

Common Core Standard:

CC.1.2.2. E Use various text features and search tools to locate key
facts or information in a text efficiently.
Objective: Students will identify where they found information using page
numbers and how to identify homographs.
Materials:

Cave Dwellers By Katherine Follett


Dry Erase Marker
Whiteboard
Motivation:
Introduce the Book
o Discuss front/back cover
o What do you see?
o Review Vocabulary
Instruction:

Use masking tool to cover certain words in the story.


o Crack
o Underground
Read at a slow pace and pause so students can help fill in the missing
word.
Introduce Homographs
o Words spelled the same but have different meanings
I like to read. I have read many books.
Guided Practice:

Comprehension Check:
Ask students questions related to the story
o What are the three zones? Write down what page number its on.
Do question 1 with the students.
If done early, have students highlight homographs in the text as class
dojo bonus points.

Individual Practice:
Students will read the question and answer, they will need to also write
where they found the answer to the question in the text.
Assessment:

I will read through the questions and students will write on their
personal whiteboards, and hold them up for me to see the answer.
Modifications:

One student will be wearing an FM system


I will be wearing a lapel microphone
Repeating directions for student who have troubling processing
information
Chunking tasks into smaller parts.
Check for understanding of directions.
Preferential Seating
Frequent feedback and praise
Extra time to complete classwork for a few group of students.
