Goal: To write well detailed online reviews

Objectives:
Students Will Be Able To
1. Practice writing online reviews
2. Discuss characteristics of a good detailed review
3. Read examples of online reviews

Theme: You Have to See This

Extensions: Allow students to start writing their MET museum review that is for
homework.

Activity 1:
Introduction to writing
online reviews
Transition to #2: Okay, so
like our peep activity and
our online YELP page,
people write often write
reviews on food or
restaurants. However, we
can write online reviews on
just about anything written in the first unit (classroom website

1.1 Pre-Stage:
1. Students will discuss with their partners SS
on the following questions:
Do you read online reviews before you
purchase or go somewhere? How many
reviews do you read before you decided
whether to go to the place or buy the
product?
2. Have a few students share Whole group
3. Students will discuss the following SS
questions again:
Have you ever written an online review? What
did you review on?
Please share what you wrote and why you
wrote it.

- Each group will be given a pack of
different flavored peeps. The group members
will eat the peep that have been given.
Students will share with their group
members how they like or dislike the taste.
Students will pretend to write a short online
review on marshmallowpeep.com on the
peep that they have just eaten.
1.3 Post-Stage:
1.. Each group will go around and read out Whole group
their online review.
2. If the review is positive, allow other class
members to try the peep. If it is negative, still
offer if anyone would like to try.

2.1 Pre-Stage: 25
1. Show some examples of online reviews T-SS
that you can write on (movies, books,
shopping, places, musicals, etc.)
2. Ask students what the purpose of writing
online reviews is and who benefits from

3. Ask what kinds of information students
would want to see or read when reading a
review.
4. Show an example online review (2). Ask
students to compare the two reviews and to
choose the review that helps them the best.
5. Introduce the online review that students
will be reading on page 53. (introduce the
sculpture, and one of his famous art piece). T-SS
6. Go over the two vocabulary words before
reading (convex, to look out of place).
2.2. During Stage: S
1. Students will individually read the online
review. Whole group
2. Show students some of the art pieces
mentioned in the reading (PPT)
3. Have students skim through the reading
again and have students focus on the
organization of the review.
4. In pairs, have students put the themes in SS
order based on the reading (exercise 2).
5. Review how a good online review should Whole group
be organized (pass out the handout)
2.3 Post-Stage:
1. Ask students if they felt that if they were
planning on going to this park, if this review Whole group
would have been helpful.

You are going to write your
own online review.
Activity 4:
Writing
Transition to Wrap-Up: Ok,
so now that youve had
practice writing online
reviews, and read each
others reviews. For
homework you will write an
online review for the MET
museum based on our class
trip.

Students will be able to read an example of
a well written online review. Based on the
reading, students will be able to discuss the
different kinds of information that is given
that makes the online review helpful.
3.1 Pre-Stage: 10 -15
1. Ask students if the online review was T-SS
written in personal or impersonal tone.

Students will find examples of some of the
points from the reading.

Students will be introduced on how to
personalize their writing. Students will
look for examples from the reading.
4.1 Pre Stage: 20 -25
1. Give instructions to the online review T-SS
writing.
2. Students will be given a notecard with
the type of online review they will be
writing on. They will be given some
information to help them write their
review. Students will be paired up to do
this activity.
3. The teacher will model the activity with T-SS
her example.

4.2. During Stage:
1. Students will be writing their reviews in SS
pairs. First they will write a rough draft.
For their final draft, students will be given
a poster paper to write their review. SS
4.3 Post-Stage:
1. Students will be moving around the
room to read each others reviews (posters
will be stationed on the walls). Explain to
students that as they read another groups
review, to look for details and information
that should be given for a well written
 review. Students will make comments on
any additional information they believe
will be helpful to include for the reader.
Students are allowed to correct any
spelling or grammar mistakes that they see.

Wrap-up Lesson Evaluation Procedures:

Assign homework:
- Workbook Unit 4E
- Write an online review on the MET
museum. Use what we have discussed in
class to write this review. This can be
based on your personal opinion J Make
sure you bring this to class Monday.

Materials: Textbook, PPT, Peeps (4 different flavors), notecards with scenarios for online
review writing, Handout for online review, posters, markers

Anticipated Problems & Suggested Solutions:

If students seem to have trouble understanding a word while reading, make note and
review the meaning as a class or look it up using the screen with the class.
Also, if a group finishes their online review early, give them another poster paper to
change the writing to a formal review.

Contingency Plans (what you will do if you finish early? need to cut LP? etc.):
If the lesson finishes early, allow students to start their homework on writing an online
review for the MET museum. If the lesson needs to be cut short, skip finding example of
the different ways to personalize your writing from the reading.
