Endbell - The cap at the end of the motor that houses the rotor bearing.

The armature core is made of laminated steel to prevent the circulation of eddy
currents. If the core were solid, magnetic currents would be produced that would
circulate in the core material near the surface and cause the core metal to heat up.

The brush rigging is an assembly that securely holds the brushes in place so that
they will be able to ride on the commutator. It is mounted on the rear end plate so
that the brushes will be accessible by removing the end plate.

The armature is the part of a DC motor that rotates and provides energy at the end
of the shaft. It is basically an electromagnet, since it is a coil of wire that has to be
specially designed to fit around core material on the shaft.

armature coils are designed for armatures, devices which vibrate under the
influence of a magnetic field, or within which an electromotive force is induced

the rotor is the component that is rotated by an external force. In a DC

motor, the rotor is the component that turns a piece of equipment.

The stator is the part of a motor or generator that is stationary . In DC

machines, the purpose of the stator is to provide the magnetic field provided by a
permanent magnet.

The commutator converts the AC Commutator Segments and Brushes voltage

generated in the rotating loop into a DC voltage. It also serves as a means
of connecting the brushes to the rotating loop.

The purpose of the brushes is to connect the generated voltage to an external

circuit.

air gap reduces the inductance of the armature and hence it responds much more
quickly to changes in armature current.

Flux leakage intercepts nearby conductive materials

The commutator risers have air spaces between one another or that the air is drawn
across the commutator there by keeping the commutator cool.

DC motor terminal leads are labeled for easy identification in the motor's terminal
box. For example, leads labeled "A1" and "A2" are connected to the armature
through the motor's brushes; leads labeled "S1" and "S2" are the ends of the series
field; and leads labeled "F1" and "F2" are the ends of the shunt field.

Brush holder insulators of all types serve two functions. First, as one would expect,
they insulate the brush holder from grounding against the frame of the motor.
Secondly, they are the structural component that holds the brush holder.
Pole piece is A piece of magnetic material forming one end of an electromagnet or
permanent magnet, shaped to control the distribution of magnetic flux in the
adjacent air gap

Field winding the electric coil around a field magnet that produces the magneto
motive force to set up the flux in an electric motor

Pole face The end of a magnetic core that faces the air gap in which the magnetic field performs
useful work.

Air outlet is a device at the end of a duct through which air is supplied to a space.

Frame a structural component which supports the functional components of the generator

Pigtail is a small cable to connect to the shank of the brush holder in order to get a
solid electrical contact between the two.
