Modules Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome 1: Identify complex engineering challenges that have Business Value
(C)
Students Evidence Sign & Date
One of the complex engineering challenges that have us interested is the Student:
ability of addressing water shortage problems as main global crisis.
Through our extensive research related to such engineering challenge, we Gabriel Hii Jia
found a great possibility of proposing changes to the usual methods of Enn
performing laundry cleaning, in which it became one of the greatest water
consumption activities for residential living purposes. The stage in which ID: 0321318
our team makes observations on laundry cleaning together followed by
understand the worth of solving such challenge is an essential initial phase
in design thinking: UNDERSTAND and OBSERVE.

Figure 1.0.1 Latest accumulation statistics of average water

consumption activities in most households live in United Kingdom by
year 2016 [1]
Figure 1.0.2 Latest accumulation statistics of average water
consumption activities in most households live in United States by
year 2016 [2]

Figure 1.0.3 Accumulation percentage of average water

consumption activities in most households live in Sydney by year 2005
[3]

Combination of three statistics shown from figure 1.0.1 to 1.0.3 shows

average water consumption for typical families (residential usage) in
United States, United Kingdom and Sydney as representative of
metropolitan cities in Australia. Cloth washing is undeniably one of the
heavy water consumption activities (reaching 10% above) among other
activities despite it does not fall into the greatest water consumption
activity of all enlisted. In terms of market opportunities, our group
consider that an innovation approach of changing the usual methods of
laundry washing would eventually benefit not only for residential
consumers but also expandable to new market opportunities, especially
for backpackers, hospitalities [4], airliners and other relevant areas that
would have limited access to water and electricity supply. To support our
point of view, we look further into more statistics and background
information to provide evidence on such market opportunities.

One of summary findings reported by UK Department of Energy and

Climate Change is remarkable as strong reference for potential residential
users seeking more efficient laundry washing clothes with competitive
capital cost while offering great savings [5].

Learning Outcome 2: Design systems with the aid of design tools and techniques, which
solves complex engineering challenges that have Business Value (D)
Students Evidence Sign & Date
Our team have a vision of proposing an innovation that would Student:
effectively reduce water and energy consumption during laundry
washing. Hence, we decide to conduct measures related to design Gabriel Hii Jia Enn
thinking, in which our team will go through ideate session to generate
valuable ideas followed by prototyping efforts in order to explore ID: 0321318
relevant solution in addressing the challenge set for current project.

IDEATION

During our brainstorming session, we had generated a clear concept of

combining existing cleaning agents with enhanced features such as fast

Patent EP 2029709 A2
Process for manufacturing stable liquid laundry detergent compositions Gabriel Hii Jia Enn
containing sulfonated fatty acid alkyl ester surfactants and comprising
methyl ester sulfonate, which both are mixed with a bulk composition ID: 0321318
to create efficient detergent. The patent is currently hold by the Procter
and Gamble company.

Acknowledgement

First of all, I would like to express my million thanks to my beloved groupmates,

which they are Ho Youliang, Lee Sze Young, Peng Guan Xiang and Aaron Wong Chung
Hieng. The project would not been carried out successfully without their dedication on
contributing efforts in respond to their designated responsibilities. I do really appreciate every
members roles in making project progress towards success through their investment in time
and energy. During every group meeting, each of us had really shown active participation in
group discussion while practising mutual respect on one anothers ideas and opinions. We had
been worked as a team for similar design module in previous semester and thus we do value
the knowledge and experience own by each of us based on our respective engineering
discipline. Best of all, we do really cherish the precious moments we had spent on group
discussions and prototyping session.

Moving on, I would like to grab this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to
Dr. Edwin Chung Chin Yau as our module course coordinator as well as our project
supervisor. Dr. Edwin is a great role model in being a huge success for driving and motivating
the innovation and critical thinking abilities among industrial sectors. His lectures serve as a
valuable inspiration for me to identify and invest smartly in terms of effort and time in
addressing an engineering challenge efficiently. He sets challenges for our team to be self-
motivated in heading the right direction of project progress to propose an innovation and
provide fundamental theoretical basis prior to prototyping stage. In additional, his advices
worth immeasurable for us to reflect on the shortcomings and mistakes made on current
project progress in order for us to achieve the correct learning outcomes throughout our
project.

Last but not least, it is honourable for me to thank once again to our co-technical
supervisor, Dr. Rajesh Rajasekaran, and representative from KLK Oleo Company, Mr. Melvin
Wong Eng Onn, as an important contact for sponsorship of cleaning agent PALMFONATE
Sulphonated Methyl Esters. Our co-technical supervisor has provided constructive
feedback based on our progressive update report on our project progress during his meetings,
such as the alterations recommended for improving our experiments and knowledge sharing
related on chemical detergency. On the other hand, we feel proud to have one international
based oleochemical producer company as our chemical agent sponsor thanks to Mr. Melvin
for his kind and responsiveness upon our request on assisting our project.
