TEACHING PHILOSOPHY 2

A great teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart Unknown. This quote

reflects my views on teaching, which as a teacher, I want to guide all my students to success and

to their full potential by instilling knowledge in them, while also influencing who they will

become as individuals. While working towards my dual certification in Childhood/Special

Education, I have established a basis for my teaching philosophy, which I intend on

incorporating in my classroom and which will ultimately reflect on my students. As I have

developed my own philosophy, I am also influenced by ideals and philosophies of progressivism,

which focuses on the whole child, their experiences and their curiosity, rather than on the content

or the teacher.

My philosophy will place a strong emphasis on critical thinking, in which students will

observe, retain, and implement the information. My philosophy will also include students

becoming conscious problem solvers and socially aware citizens by incorporating projects that

will deal with real world issues, such as climate change or overpopulation, which will make

students prepared in the world, and not just academically.

My philosophy will include students learning by doing and experiencing for themselves,

such as taking part in interactive group work or field trips. These experiences will give my

students the opportunity to develop social skills by communicating with their peers and working

collaboratively. This is important because from a young age, students should be aware of their

surroundings and how to socially interact with other individuals. It will also encourage learning

information, rather than memorizing. Student-centered learning is an important part of my

philosophy because while I am providing the information to my students, I believe that they can

learn best from each other, life experiences, and their own self.

Another aspect of my philosophy is making the classroom a setting in which students will

feel comfortable and confident in their learning environment, enabling them to advance and

succeed as both students and as individuals. From the beginning of the year, I will ask students to

help establish classroom rules, which will be enforced throughout the year. After their

contribution, I will ask that all students sign the set of rules stating that they agree and will

follow them. By doing this, I hope to gain the trust of students and to establish a positive

classroom climate, where they will feel empowered and will be interested in learning.

As a teacher, I am committed to determining the needs of all students and being aware

that all students retain information differently and learn at a different pace. I am conscious of the

fact that some students will learn better through visual aids, some through hands-on projects, and

some through auditory, but I plan on incorporating the use of all these learning styles to benefit

all students. I hope to include the influence and involvement of families, outside communities,

and colleagues into my classroom by developing a personal learning network, in which I can

receive feedback and advice from other educators on the internet. Developing a collaborative

relationship with sources outside of the classroom will assist in bringing my classroom and

students to the highest potential.

During my time as a teacher, I plan on remaining aware and conscious of the work I am

doing by creating a journal, in which I will take notes following each lesson to determine if it

was successful and if my students benefited from it. By constantly reflecting, I hope to grow and

learn as a teacher, an individual, and to learn from my students as well. I want to make teaching

an opportunity for me to become lifelong learner by observing, creating, and stepping outside of

my comfort zone. I look forward to being the teacher who will make a positive impact on the

lives of my students and contribute to their personal growth, academically, morally, and socially.
