Title/Topic and Grade Level:

Measurement, 4th Grade

II. Lesson Essential Question:

How do we measure and convert using inches, feet and yards?

III. Standard:

4. MD.A.1. Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km,

m, cm. mm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express

measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a

two column table.

IV. Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives Assessments

SWBAT identify a variety of TWBAT access students acquired knowledge by

lengths and be able to convert observing students ability to understand measurement and

them. conversion.

V. Materials:

Rulers

Tape measurer

Students work books

VI. Pre-Lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:

Prior to the lesson, students copied down vocabulary words that are essential for the chapter and

upcoming test. Students already know that 12 inches is one foot and a yard is 36 inches.

VII. Lesson Beginning:

To begin the lesson, have students open their workbooks to the requested page. As a class, we

went through some problems on estimating the sizes of objects. This helps students gain an

understanding of length and measurement.

VIII. Instructional Plan:

1. Show students tape measure.

2. Show students multiple lengths, such as 2 feet, a yard, etc.

3. Give students rulers.

4. Ask students to find and put their finger on one inch, half an inch, and quarter of an inch

on their rulers.

5. Walk around to check.

6. Practice measuring different lengths in their workbooks.

7. Go over answers with students.

8. Have students explore and measure around the classroom. Students will record their

estimate measurement and the actual measurement.

IX. Conclusion:

To conclude the lesson, have students come back to their seats. As a class, have students discuss

their findings. Tell students how great they did measuring the objects in their classroom.

Title of Artifact: Lesson Plan 2: Math
Standard: Standard Five Application of Content The teacher understands how to connect
concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and
collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.

I am placing my artifact, Lesson Plan 2: Math, under Standard Five- Application of Content, as
evidence of continued mastery towards creating lessons that effectively connect concepts in a
variety of ways. The content is applied through hands on learning, individual learning and
working collaboratively with peers. In my artifact, students are given the independence to
explore freely around the classroom. Students should be encouraged to question and experiment
with their environment. This is evidence of my understanding of applying content in various
ways to reach all students and their learning styles.
