April 24 - 28 Beginner Reader Lesson

Yellow Group (Landon, Kenzee, Sophie, Ella, Catherine, Caleb)

SOL: K.6 The student will demonstrate an understanding that print conveys meaning.
K.7 The student will develop an understanding of basic phonetic principles.

Content Outline: Students who recognize words automatically spend less time decoding and can pay more attention to comprehending what is being
read. Students should be able to recognize a selection of high-frequency and sight words. Phonetic skills are the foundation for
decoding and encoding words i.e., they are the basic skills needed to develop fluency and automaticity in reading and writing.
Rationale: The beginner reader lesson includes specific sections and activities that will increase the frequency and comprehension for the
students. We are focusing on building the foundation so that students will soon be able to read to learn instead of learn to read.

Connection: The fluency books were read the previous weeks. The word focus is related to both in text and out of text. The students word bank is
built into the lesson as well. The students all have COW and are continuing to build their reading knowledge.
Differentiation: Group is put together based on MAP testing data, PALS testing data, and phonemic awareness data. The lesson includes a range of
activities that will meet the needs of all students.

Objective: The student will be able to correctly identify high-frequency and sight words. By Friday, the student will be able to sort their word
study words accurately and be able to explain why. During a cold read, the student will be able to read the word focus words correctly
by decoding or looking at the beginning sounds.
