Microplanning a week of instruction in regards to classroom management is crucial to how the

rest of the year will continue. The first day of the classroom procedures and rules will reflect the

way the rest of the year will go but if the first day does not go well then start fresh the next day.

My beliefs as a teacher when it comes to discipline is that it should be used as a rare occasion

and not as a regular occurrence in the classroom. Effective teachers manage and non-effective

teachers discipline. Discipline is necessary but if it is used on a daily basis then the teacher needs

to do some real reflection of what is happening in their classroom. This is why class organization

has to be seen as a functional necessity and not a burden for a teacher to deal with in the

classroom. When the teacher can assess the function of everything in their class and assess what

is working and what is not that will take some honesty and seeking advice from master teachers.

It will take research and techniques on organization in the class and patience and perseverance.

Section one:

How I will form and maintain a community in my classroom is I will refer to resources that I

have gathered through my college years. I will reflect on my practicum lessons that I have

learned and I the papers I have written in classroom management in the classroom. In the

classroom I will maintain a calm demeanor at all times because I need to remember that I am the

leader in the classroom that students will be looking towards for help for every situation. I will

make mistakes but I how I deal with those mistakes is how students will be looking at as well.

Section two:

The daily procedures in my class will begin at the door of my classroom. Depending on whether

I pick up my students from the playground will determine of that is where the procedures for my

class start there. When students come into the classroom I will be there to greet each student by

hand and by name. When they enter they will hang up personal items, choose their lunch item of
the day, go to their desks, start morning work, listen to announcements, start morning meeting in

a circle on the carpet, go back to desks to finish morning, go over morning work, and start the

lesson for the day. I will show them procedures on going to the nurse, using the bathroom,

turning in work finished, asking questions, resolving issues with other students, throwing away

items, walking in line, lining up, and anything else that comes up that I may have overlooked. As

a teacher I may think of all that I think I will need to go over as a teacher but the truth is that I

need flexibility in my thinking and my teaching style because things will always come up in the

classroom. For example, if an administration person walks into the classroom I will need a

procedure for something like that as well. I will always need to think if I have created a

procedure for my students when it comes to problems in the classroom.

Section three:

The discipline structure that I will use will be based off of stars earned in a day or in week. When

a student fills up their chart they will get a prize. It will be based upon procedures that are still

being learned and behaviors that need positive or negative reinforcement. I will have my rules of

be respectful, be safe, and be prepared. These rules will allow students to build up a community

that will be facilitated by myself and manifest into a safe, secure and healthy place to learn. The

purpose is to reinforce behavior or actions from students that I want to see regularly and to not

give attention to behaviors or actions that I do not want repeated. I will be able to address

situations without getting too negative or openly embarrassing students in the classroom. At the

end of the day a reflection of a specific incident can be filled out if needed for improvement and

for documentation for myself of a continuing problem.

Reflective page on supporting research and theory behind my ideas and how it connects to

my philosophy of education:
To continually redefine and revise a philosophy statement takes intentional effort that evolves

over time. Through experience and the process of trial and error, a continual practice of self-

reflection will help to develop the course of curriculum. This also will guide the depth of

learning in the lessons, the amount of time spent in specific in an area of content and drive

assessments that will help a teacher determine whether the content has been learned. The

amazing thing is that whether a teaching philosophy is considered progressive or essentialism a

teacher can facilitate learning through whatever style fits their personality. The importance to

continually define the style of teaching to implement the learning theory into the classroom.

Keeping clear thoughts on what and how to get things done will be effective in self-reflection.

The key word in Essentialism is essential. It assumes satisfaction with the status quo existing in

ones culture/society, concentrates on life in the real world (the world of the senses) and on the

attitudes and skills viewed as essential both for survival, social stability, and for individual

happiness and success, (Seibolt, PPT). A Progressive teacher is learning through the relating of

peers, talking when learning, problem solving, hands on activities, and sharing with one another.

Progressivism agrees with my style of learning although essentialism is what my teaching traits

tested. The three Cs, which are collaboration, communication, and connecting, combined with

the three Rs of writing, reading, and arithmetic, are the perfect combination for learning. Even

though an essentialist classroom consists of students at desks, teacher is the model for intellect

and morals, and respect for authority is expected, the need for flexibility in lessons is unarguable.

Even though Essentialism should be respected it does not fit the needs of todays students where

hands-on and movement when learning new topics are opportunities for sparking the imagination

and encouraging peer communication in lessons.

On the first days of school referring to Dr Wongs practical advice on having a classroom

well ran I will use. In his book he talks about the difference between procedures and discipline.

Procedures need to be explained, shown to students, and students need to be allowed to do the

procedures without getting into trouble. When students are allowed to make mistakes and work

through them then the pressure of getting into trouble will be gone. Students will experience the

process of learning through something and not always trying to get the right answers.

Pavlov was the creator of classical conditioning and that helped to create the basis of

behaviorism which is considered operant conditioning. In that process when something is

considered a stimulant then a behavior can reinforced through positive reinforcement after a

reward is given to reinforce the desired behavior. When something is not given or unfavorable

outcome happens then that is a negative reinforcement. When I use a chart to earn stars then that

is how my technique will be used in the classroom. As with all students this approach may not

work for all students but that is why I am thankful that there are other mentor teachers that will

be there for advice and there are other techniques that I can use. No matter what experience, trial

and error and making mistakes are the best teachers.
