Road Hierarchy

Selected area JHILMIL COLONY

This Streets have their own life throughout the day. The hustle
bustle on the streets turns into a weekly market on Mondays outside
the Ram Leela Maidan.
The Road hierarchy is clear and road usually widths get narrower as
we go inside.
Primary Road run around the block. Secondary roads go through the
block. The widest road is due to function i.e. Monday market.
Tertiary roads reach the interior most areas.
Built Use

The Urban Fabric is mostly Residential. Three types of Residential

area can be identified- Plotted Residential, Row Housing & Slums.
Institutional area exists around Ram Leela Maidan. It has come up as
a result of large open space and its varying uses.
Commercial area exists alongside roads.
Some of the residential have shops on ground floor making it Mixed
Use.
Density

The Built to unbuilt ratio is 0.39.

There are large open spaces around
Solid 28% residential area giving rise to a dense
built but punctured with large
Void 72% greens.
From the figure ground relation we
can also see observe the hierarchy of
open spaces.
Building Heights

Building Heights are

usually 3-4 story high in
the residential area.
But the Slums are 1-2
story high.
The Institutional area is
also 1-2 story high.
Morphology Study

Since the place has been developed by different owners there are
various typologies of housing leading to different architectural
character.
Sudden or abrupt change in typologies causes confusion and lack of
identity.
Scattered and low density of built fabric doesn't fulfill the growing
demand.
Housing typologies along the street on ground floor are converted
into shops.
Illegal construction on row housing leads to problem in light and
ventilation.
Park inside the gated community remain Unused.

Inferences

Manifestation of Continuity
Schools, gurudwara, mosque near ram, leela maiden make the area even
more active. High intensity of para transit movement can be seen here.
Because of the intensity of activities near the ram leela maiden the ground
floors in that stretch is getting commercialised.
Block of Tomorrow: What should it be like?
Mixed Use A mixture of uses along the residential areas would ensure better safety against
crimes late at all times of the day and would lead to better appropriation of space at all times.
Pedestrian Friendly Pedestrian areas are usually encroached upon which makes it difficult for
pedestrian circulation.
Lesser Disparity The Residential plots are very less dense and the Slums are extremely dense
making them ill-ventilated and unhygienic.
Self- Sufficient A block should have its own amenities like school, hospital etc. nearby.

Transformations in Space
Transformation of space from rickshaw parking to food
street in noon and textile and shopping street in night.
The ground floor of residence near the market street is
converted into commercial.
Comments
By studying an urban block, we realize that design is being used a tool of
segregation between classes and not enough interactions between different
sections of the society.
Design should instead be used as a tool for bringing about the changes in society
that better represent a unsegmented society and cultural diversity.
