Technologys Effect on my Literacy Narrative

As a kid, I grew up learning how to use technology such as TVs, VCRs, computers,

Gameboys, and a few other technological tools. It seems to me that I was still very limited to

technology compared to how kids grow up today. The first phone I got was an old flip phone.

When I first got it I used a lot of abbreviations and slang, but I soon learned to use correct

language. Considering I did not receive a phone till my 7th grade year, and only having an IPod

one or two years before that, I believe texting only had a short impact on my literacy narrative.

I do believe Social networking can influence literacy narrative. Recently I have decided

to delete all my social media because I think it can have a negative impact. In my opinion, the

constant use of false information and data cycling through social media only helps people

become more negative and misinformed. It also develops bad habits of punctuation, grammar,

and style. Doing this has led me to read more as well. I have learned that it is much more

important to consume knowledge and reliable information through books and articles rather than

through media such as twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Technology has many positive and negative effects on todays society. Young kids now

grow up with IPhones at extremely young ages. It is rumored that it is already having a negative

impact on their literacy and ability to effectively communicate. However, technology is also

freeing kids to have access to information all around the world in the palm of their hand.

Since technology is moving so quickly, we are still in the early years of observing how new

technology will affect our literacy as a societal whole.
