authority noun

If you have authority, then you have the power,

knowledge & the right:

i) to make laws

ii) to expect obedience

iii) to control things (or people) &

iv) to judge.

We often use the phrase the authorities to describe the police

force, emergency workers, or the government.

Authority is either earned by someone, or is given to them

- so they can do a particular job, eg the police.

Some people are happy to obey (or submit to) authority, but
others choose to resist authority.

Example 1
Friends, David Alegretti & Sean Foster, have found a
way to go out & socialise - without spending any
money.

Dressed in bright yellow vests, they have slipped into a theatre to

watch a movie, walked right through the ticketing gate at the
zoo, & even gained access to a Coldplay concert - all without
paying any money & with nobody questioning them.

The two friends said that the high-viz yellow vests gave them
authority to do things they normally couldnt do.
Example 2
At age 20, Mr Ariel Sharon joined the Israeli military as a
soldier. However, he showed such extraordinary leadership
skills that he was quickly made a field commander.

Mr Sharon was involved in the Six-Day War of 1967 & the Yom-
Kippur War of 1973. He then left the military & served as
Minister of Defense, & finally became the 11th Prime Minister of
Israel.

Throughout his military & political careers, Mr Sharon, earned the

respect of those under his leadership & he used his authority with
care & wisdom.
