Assignment: Design a lesson plan which integrates the use of one or more Internet web pages into instruction in a meaningful
way. Include ALL materials for your lesson such as worksheets, data collection forms or other scaffolds.

Lesson Plan Title The Cycle of Life

Open /Essential What makes the life cycle of a butterfly, frog, and dog similar? What factors make their life
Question cycle different?
The lesson is being taught so students can recognize the four stages of the life cycle of living
things especially highlighting the life cycle of frogs, butterflies, and dogs. Students will learn
a song about the life cycle from YouTube called Life Cycle Songs for Kids by Super Kids
that introduces different examples of the life cycle and the process of it. Groups
Lesson Summary of students will be provided with 12 pictures each; 4 of what a butterfly looks like
in its different stages of life cycle, 4 of a frog at different stages, and 4 of a dog
at different stages. Students will complete a Venn diagram that demonstrates
their knowledge of the similarities and differences of the life cycle for different
animals.

1. Explain that stages of the life cycle are different for different animals (e.g., mouse, cat,
horse, butterfly, frog).

instruction The life cycle starts when an animal, human, or plant is born.

Examples To make sure that we are all on the same page lets go over as a class the four stages: birth,
of guiding adulthood, reproduction, death. Whats interesting is that some living things will change a

lesson
Now that we know the four stages butterflies go through becoming adult butterflies, lets
look at the life cycle of another living thing; a dog.
Heres a picture of the life cycle of a dog: https://www.education.com/worksheet-
image/219862/color-life-cycle-dog-life.gif.
We know that a dog first starts as a puppy, based on what you know, what does a puppy
need to be able to grow into an adult dog? (Im looking for thinking about how a puppy is
able to grow such as getting milk and food from its mother/owner. We know that with living
things giving them the right food and time will allow it to develop into an adult).
All living things need food, water, and care to reach their adulthood.
The life cycle we want to look at is the life cycle of a frog from its beginning steps to
becoming an adult. Heres a picture that gives you an idea of what a frog goes through to
become an adult: http://www.merrittacademy.org/imgs/student/pixie22/media/image3.png.
Class discussion: Did you find any similarities between a dog, butterfly, and frog as they
grow through their life cycle? (answers can include: all of them change a few different times
from birth to adulthood, all of them are able to reproduce at adulthood, frogs and butterflies
begin as eggs)
Did you notice any differences between the three animals life cycles? (It takes a different
amount of time for each animal to reach adulthood; dog=12-18 months, frog=few weeks,
butterfly=6 weeks. Dogs dont hatch from eggs whereas frogs and butterflies do).
Now that weve gone over the life cycle I would like you all to pick two of the three animals
to compare in a Venn diagram and discuss the similarities and differences.
This is the rubric that I created for your Venn diagrams. Im looking for you to name the
animals you are comparing, at least two differences are given for each animal chosen, two
similarities are listed and you can explain what makes the animals cycles similar or different
in one sentence. Each table will get their own rubric to look over to make sure youre on the
right track.

Students have to understand that every living thing in this world starts as a baby and eventually
Prerequisite dies.
Skills Needed
Students have to understand what similarity and difference mean as I use those terms a lot.

Directions: Pick two of the three animals discussed: dog, butterfly, or frog to compare.
Write what makes one different on one circle and write what makes the other animal
different on the other circle. The middle circle is for things that make them similar. Write at
least two differences for each animal and at least two similarities between the two animals.
Write one sentence about why you wrote down a difference or similarity.
