WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

Every year, from January 18th to 25th, Chris ans all over the world observe a Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity. A theme
is chosen jointly by the Pon fical Council for Promo ng Chris an Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order of the
World Council of Churches. The theme for this year is: RECONCILIATION - THE LOVE OF CHRIST COMPELS US, words taken
from the Second Le er of St Paul to the Corinthians, chapter 5, vs. 14-20.
This year's celebra on of Chris an Unity has special significance because it marks the 500th anniversary of the Reforma on.
On October 31, 1517, Mar n Luther nailed his 95 theses on the door of the Wi enberg Cathedral in Germany an
event which sparked o the very painful division in the Chris an world between the Catholic Church and the Reformed
Churches. On October 31, 2016, Pope Francis and the President of the World Lutheran Federa on embraced each other
and signed a Joint Statement ending 500 years of separa on and animosity.
The main Prayer Service this year will be held at Salvaon Church, Dadar, on January 20, 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The
service is being organised by a Joint Commi ee of Catholics and representa ves of the New Life Fellowships. So far, most
of our Ecumenical Services have been held jointly by Catholics and the Main Line Reforma on Churches. This is the first
me that we are having a Prayer Service in Mumbai organised by the Catholic Church and the 'Pentecostal Churches'.
I would urge as many Catholics as possible to a end this Prayer Service at Salva on Church. Let us pray together that the
prayer of Jesus that "all may be one" (John 17:20) will be answered.

Reconciliation and the

Reformation Anniversary
2
017 is the 500th anniversary of the key event in the reforma on movements that
marked the life of the Western Church over several centuries. This event has been
a controversial theme in the history of inter-church rela ons. The Lutheran-Roman
Catholic Commission on Unity has worked hard to produce a shared understanding of the
commemora on. Given the fact that the history of the Reforma on was marked by painful
division, this is a very remarkable achievement.
It was in the context of the anniversary that the Council of Churches in Germany (ACK),
invited by the World Council of Churches, took up the work of crea ng the resources for
this year's Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity. A commi ee of ten members, represen ng
dierent churches, met three mes in 2014-2015 to develop the necessary texts. A par cular
emphasis was placed on the prepara on of the ecumenical worship service for the Week.
The churches in Germany agreed that the way to commemorate ecumenically this Reforma on
event should be with a Christusfest a Celebra on of Christ. If the emphasis were to be
placed on Jesus Christ and His work of reconcilia on as the centre of Chris an faith, then
all the ecumenical partnersRoman Catholic, Orthodox, Bap st, Methodist, Mennonite and
otherscould par cipate in the anniversary fes vi es.
From this agreement and the wider ecumenical context emerges the strong theme of this
year's Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity: "Reconcilia on The Love of Christ Compels Us"
(cf. 2 Cor 5:14-20). Its important report, 'From Conflict to Communion', recognises that
both tradi ons approach this anniversary in an ecumenical age, with the achievements of
fi y years of dialogue behind them, and with new understandings of their own history and
theology separa ng that which is polemical from the theological insights of the Reforma on.
It became clear that the material for this Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity would need
to have two accents: on the one hand, there should be a celebra on of God's love and
grace, the 'jus fica on of humanity through grace alone', reflec ng the main concern of the
churches marked by Mar n Luther's Reforma on. On the other hand, the materials should
also recognise the pain of the subsequent deep divisions which aicted the Church, openly
name the guilt, and oer an opportunity to take steps toward reconcilia on.
Ul mately, it was Pope Francis' 2013 Apostolic Exhorta on Evangelii Gaudium ('The Joy of
the Gospel') which provided the theme for this year, when it used the quote: "The Love of
Christ Compels Us" (Paragraph 9). With this scripture verse (2 Cor 5:14), taken in the context
of the en re fi h chapter of the second le er to the Corinthians, the German commi ee
formulated the theme for the Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity 2017.
This biblical text emphasises that reconcilia on is a gi from God, intended for the en re
Crea on. "God was reconciling the world (kosmos) to Himself, not coun ng their trespasses
against them, and entrus ng the message of reconcilia on to us." (v. 19) As a result of
God's ac on, the person who has been reconciled in Christ is called in turn to proclaim this
reconcilia on in word and deed: "The love of Christ compels us." (v. 14, NIV) "So we are
ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf
of Christ, be reconciled to God." (v. 20) The text stresses that this reconcilia on is not without
sacrifice. Jesus gives His life; He died for all. The ambassadors of reconcilia on are called, in
His name, to give their lives similarly. They no longer live for themselves; they live for Him
who died for them.
(Excerpts of the text from the Internaonal version of the text of the Week of Prayer 2017,
published by the Ponfical Council for promong Chrisan Unity)
