One place that I has influenced my literacy narrative was my schools
chapel in elementary school through middle school. We would host all kinds of events in the chapel. Sometimes we would have spelling bees, plays, rehearsals, etc. Every year we would perform a Shakespeare play which involved memorizing and practicing lines for countless hours. Sometimes we would be required to write poetry or songs and perform them together on Fridays. My friends and I seemed to always be writing or composing something for the chapel. And even if we were not participating on stage, we were spectating from the audience as others performed. Nearly everything we did involved the chapel and that is why it is one of the most influential places on my literacy narrative. A connection I had with our Malcom X reading was what he said about college. He talked about college primarily being a status symbol. Malcom X did not go to college and was probably more educated than most college students. It reminded me that I am here to learn, not just to gain the status of being in college. Many distractions are the reason so many students do not get the right education and I am trying to limit those distractions.
