Blondl, Martha. The Radicalism of Black Lives Matter. 15. August, 2016.

www.Inthesetimes.com / accessed. 2. April, 2017.

This article raises issues of how black lives matter has become a radicalized movement. Within a
radicalized movement there is a lot more chaos. The article highlights the evolution of Black
Lives Matter from when Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman. This incident
sparked the movement. An organization that was created to bring about change in a peaceful
manner was sabotaged by outsiders trying to create havoc in communities that are already filled
with turmoil.

In the SM project this article will be used to highlight the misuse and the epicenter of where the
once peaceful movement spiraled into a revolt. Although weve seen Black Lives matter
change overtime the media has never addressed it head-on. Instead they have assimilated the
whole African-American community with violence. Inthesetimes.com is a website that addresses
issues that this generation faces. It is a platform that seeks to enlighten others.

Ball, Charing Why Natural Hair is indeed a political Statement. 5. June, 2012.

www.madamenoire.com/ accessed.2 April, 2012

Although this article is opinionated it presents a lot of valid facts about why natural hair is a
political statement. In the mid-90s natural hair was frowned upon. It was difficult for African
American women to get jobs. Even after they were able to get jobs, they were told that their hair
was unprofessional and awkward. As a result women with kinky curly hair textures felt the need
to flat iron or perm their hair. The purchase of perms increased drastically. It was only a
temporary solution and it caused a lot of long term damage. This article highlights the
importance of African American women getting back to their roots and loving themselves fully.
This article is biased because it was written by an African American woman however it
highlights issues that a nonbiased article may not have.

Early, Gerald Afrocentric: Cultural and Political movement

This article discusses all things Afrocentric. It begins by defining the word Afrocentric. The
meaning of Afrocentric is cultural and political movement whose mainly African American
adherents regard themselves and all other blacks as syncretic Africans and believe that their
worldview should positively reflect traditional African values. This idea arose when the civil war
began and black nationalists and radicals began to rise up. One person that has been remembered
for encouraging this movement is Malcolm X. Malcolm X was the founder of the black panthers
and this group promoted violence against the white man as well as African American pride.
This source highlights the origin of extremist movements that led to black power
organizations. This source is valid because Britannica.com/ is an outlet that provides
information. Some of the information will need to be cross-checked to make sure nothing wrong
because this platform does allow opinions of others.

Meme Link: http://www.memes.com/r/qalg accessed. 5 April, 2017

This is a meme that I chose to make for a studio and I chose to use this because I feellike it really
addresses an important issue of people not wanting to listen. On many occasions, Ive heard
people say that black lives matter means all other lives dont. People tend to find holes in
arguments and use them to their advantage. I may be biased but its important tpget to the root of
why people become so standoffish over this matter.

Neal, Larry The Black Arts movement Nationalhumanitiescenter.org/

This source is an autobiography of the life of an artist during the Black Arts Movement. It
discusses the trials and difficulty faced everyday being a black man in a white word. The
movement is referred to as a revolution. This is significant because a revolution means an
instance of change in the social order of a set system. African Americans everywhere were rising
up against the government and making political statements through arts. Violence was no longer
utilized to bring about peace. That sentence in itself is a juxtaposition. This source is valuable
because it creates a personal and primary perspective this first-hand experience is a primary
source. The source is valid because it comes from a government website where all information
must be credible.

Origins of the Dashiki: cultural significance AfrikanRepublic.com, Accessed 3/27/17

The dashiki is an important part of fashion in the Afrocentric movement. They speak to the
origin of African cultures of all sorts. In Africa, there are different types of cloth; they are all
called different names. In Nigeria it is called native, In Ghana it is called kente cloth. Many
countries refer to it differently. This style has recently made a tremendous recovery with an
overwhelming sense of African-American pride. This article talks about how slave traditions
have evolved. This is seen as a positive thing because the culture that was once suppressed
during slavery is now being reintroduced into society.

Sell, Mike Blackface and the arts movement. https;//www.Muse.jhu.edu 2.April, 2017

The black arts movement was a key part of the success to the Afrocentric movement. Many
people began expressing ideas through poetry, music, art and other genres. This was seen in the
late 1960s when the Harlem Renaissance began. Sell talks about the origin of the art and how
far it has come. This specific source may express some bias simply because it is an essay. More
times than often, essays tend to lean towards bias. That being so, I still feel like this source
would be helpful in portraying the image of how blacks have progressed significantly.

bring some neutrality to the presentation on the Afrocentric movement.

Whitcroft, Glen. The Origin of African American music www.academia.edu/african-american-

music

Accessed. 2 April, 2017

This article starts from the 19th century and talks about how music has evolved. Music is a really
important part of the Afrocentric movement because it brings people together. Music has evolved
tremendously; some articles even suggest that the music of today has created an increase in
violence within the black community. Although there is no substantial evidence, many believe

this theory. Music has its pros and cons but it has managed to always allow people to forget their
troubles and enjoy themselves. This article simply highlights different types of music and the
importance of music during the civil war. Academia.edu is a nonbiased educational source
therefore it will be a good source to utilize in the multi modal project.
