didnthavethemotivationtodoit.Suewasalsoreally
focusedontalkingaboutherfamilyratherthandoing
homework.Tome,thiskindofstoodout.Everyweek
shewouldtalkabouthermomandherdad,asifshe
didntgettoseethemortalktothemalot.Idefinitely
thinkSueshomelifeiswhatisimpactingherlearning
andfocustodoschoolwork.Ifstudentsarent
receivingtherightamountofencouragementand
attentionfromtheirparents,thiscangreatlyimpact
theirabilitiesinschool.
IhavealsonoticedthiswithsomeotherstudentsthatI
wasntabletoconnectwithonapersonallevel.We
wereinformedaboutastudentJohnwhosemother
passedawayafewmonthsago.Hisbehaviorissimilar
toSues.Heneverwantstodohomeworkduringquiet
time,heactsouttohisteachersandhispeers,andis
veryaggressiveattimes.Noticinghiscertainbehaviors
andknowingabouthislosshasleadtomebelievethat
theseareinresponsetoloosinghismother.

thedistancebetweenastudentsabilitytoperforma

Vygotskystheorycorrelatestothewaythehousehold
canaffectthelearningoftheSueandJohn.Since
Vygotskybelievesthatadultslearningcanimpactthe
learningoftheirchildren,thiscouldbethereasoning
behindthestudentsabove.AlthoughIamuncertainof
thejobstheirparentsdo,thiscouldimpactthe
learningoftheirchildren.Sincetheyarentgetting
enoughattentionathome,thiscouldbebecausetheir
parentsarecarelessorneglectful.Vygotskybelieves
thatitisimportantforpeopletofocusonconnections
withpeoplearoundthem,thatsociallearningprecedes
development.Withoutbeingabletoconnectwiththeir
parentsallthetime,SueandJohnhaveturnedtothis
behavioratschoolwithisaffectingtheirlearning.
