Lesson Plan

Title Early America


Subject Pilgrims & Natives
Author Alexis Hagan
Standard Writing Standard 3 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.3; Write
narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective technique, descriptive details, and
clear event sequences.
Goal: Create a total educational environment that
promotes respect for difference
Visual-linguistic: writing about the different life styles.
Auditory: teaching the lesson; brainstorming; later having
the students share what theyve written.
Kinesthetic: creating a representation of a pilgrim or
native.
Gardeners Intelligence: Interpersonal (how the people
of the time interacted with one another)

Objective Knowledge of the lifestyle of Native Americans and


immigrants. To
comprehend what life was like for the pilgrims, and
Natives, when they
arrived. Compare, and contrast, the lives of the Pilgrims
and the surrounding
native tribes.

Time duration 85 100 minutes

Materials PowerPoint, paper, writing utensils/markers, What was it


like to be a native person in this time? What was it like to
be a Pilgrim in this time? What are the similarities and
differences?
Crafting paper, glue, markers

Instruction Do first: Build your own person Crafting exercise, using


house hold materials, create a pilgrim or a native person.
(30-40 mins)
"What is your understanding of the Natives and the
Pilgrims?"

Mini-Instruction: Using the PowerPoint, I will teach


about the Pilgrims coming over to America, their
interactions/peace treaty with the Wampanoag tribe. I will
teach about their Chief Massasoit, as well as a native by
the name of Squanto, and their interactions with the
surrounding tribe, allowing the students to obtain an
understanding of the differences between the tribes and
the Pilgrims (20-30 mins)

Guided Practice: In small groups, students will work


together to create a Venn Diagram about the differences
and similarities of the local native tribes and the colonists.
While the students are doing this, the teacher will be
creating their own diagram (with the same stipulations) on
the board (10-15 mins) Share with the class (5-10 mins)

Independent Practice: Creative writing assignment:


students will write one to two paragraphs from the
perspective a tribesmen or a pilgrim, about an experience
they might have had(20 mins)

Exit Slip: One thing you learned that you didnt know
before. (end of lesson/out the door)

Reflections The student achieves a better understanding of the culture


of early America,
they gain the skills to be able to compare, and contrast,
different cultures/life
styles allowing them to understand that everyone is
different and they can
apply this reasoning to their own encounters in life. There
will be active
learning through the allowance of questions. Strengths:
provision of the
websites in case I need to return to them to remember
where I was going with
the ideas I used them for, the simplicity of it. Weaknesses:
No scripted lesson,
Im still not sure what Im going to say or how Im going to
say it.
