Initiation: Good morning class! How is everyone doing today? Im glad to hear it. So
today we will be going over the skill of the full swing. We will be using long irons for
this skill. Can anyone tell me when you would want to use a long iron? Correct, you
would use a long iron after the initial drive off the tee. Irons are typically used when
you are less than 200 feet away from the green. One thing important is to always keep
safety in mind. But other than that today will be a fun lesson here at the driving range
so who is ready to have some fun?
Introductory Activity
(Time allotted- 5-10 mins )
Description of learning tasks: 1) Organizational diagram(s):
To start this activity after the initiation I will T=teacher
X= student
have all the students grab a long iron and set up in T
the parking lot with enough space away from each X x x x x x
other to practice a full swing. X x x x x
At first I will have all students place their X x x x x
clubs by their feet. 2) Instructional cues:
Eye on the ball
I will then demonstrate and/or have
Arms in a Y shape
someone demonstrate a full swing without a club
Feet shoulder width apart
then with a club.
Dominant hand on bottom
I will have the class watch and mimmack Soft but firm grip
the correct form without a club Keep elbow tight to body
We will then use a club to do our practice Keep front arm almost
swing. completely straight
Once I feel the class is ready we will move Keep knees bent and
chest slightly facing down.
to the next activity.
3) Questions to ask:
Do you feel comfortable?
Do you need help?
Are you keeping your eye on
the ball?
Are you facing the direction
you want the ball to go?

Differentiated Instruction:
Simplified- To simplify this activity for a student I could pair them up
with another student that is more proficient so they can act as a guide.
Challenge- To make this activity more challenging I would grade
students on their form.

-Let students know how they are doing and if
they need tweaks to their swings.
3) Questions to ask:
-How did you hold the club?
-Did you keep your head down?
-Where does the caddy stand?
-What is the difference between a 3
and 4 iron?

Differentiated Instruction:
Simplified- Have the student go to an open area on the driving range
so they could get more reps.
Challenge- Have the student aim for the further away targets.

Closure: Great job everybody! Thank you all for being safe and aware of one
another. Its not always easy staying patient so thank you for holding the clubs
like a cane and leaving them on the ground until you were told to pick them up.
Now, could someone give me three examples of the cues we worked on today?
What is the major difference between using a 3 and 4 iron? Was it easier or
harder to aim for the first set of cones? Great! Before we go, could we all
pretend we have a club in our hand, and practice a swing with a long iron?
Perfect! Thank you all again and enjoy the rest of your day.
