2. Show the students a real life debit and credit card and explain to the students what is on both
of them.
Both debit and credit cards are almost identical in their appearances except for one thing on
the front of each of them, Victor tell me what is different between the physical appearance of
these two cards? (Show Victor the two cards and have him notice that the difference is that
a debit card will say Debit in front of the card and a credit card will not have Credit nor
Debit).
3. To keep the students engaged, I will have home made debit and credit cards for them where
they will give me the correct card based on the given question.
Now that you know a little bit more about the differences between a debit and a credit card,
I will pass out some home made debit and credit cards and you guys will give me the correct
card depending on the given question. Also it is important to remember that these cards are
NOT what are used in real life, the real life cards are the ones I showed you at the beginning
of the lesson (show the students the real life cards).
Questions:
I have $360 in my checking account, so that is the most I can spend using this card.
Answer: Debit
I had to pay an extra $80 for this television because I didnt pay my entire bill right away.
Answer: Credit
I dont have any cash with me, so I will pay with this card.
Answer: Both
4. Now that we have finished having a little fun with my home made debit and credit cards, I
want you all to work with your partner on the Debit Cards or Credit Cards? worksheet. If
you have any questions feel free to raise your hand and I will come and help. (Monitor)
Extension: For extension, the students will be given a review sheet (You are a Real Card!) with a
more specific definition of the differences between a debit and credit card and will be asked to
identify which statement describes which card and explain why. This will help the students
understand how credit and debit cards are different in multiple ways.
