Link to previous, current, and/ or future knowledge: Remember last year when your 5th grade
teacher talked about the advantages and disadvantages you would have when having a credit and
debit card? Well today we are going to learn what exactly is debit and credit card and ways they can
be applied in our daily lifes so you can one day become a knowledgeable consumer and investor!
Engagement: I will show the students what a real life debit and credit card looks life and explain to
them what is on each of them.
Outcome: By the end of the lesson, you will be able to understand when a characteristic is
provided, and you will be able to determine if it applies to debit cards, credit cards or both.
Expected behavior: You may call out unless my hand is up or if I call out someone individually.
Rules when looking at real life debit and credit cards include not pulling on them, throwing them
around, and giving it back to me in the shape I let you see them.

Explanation/Procedures: Ask Victor to point out the

and a debit card.
Debit cards are issued by the bank when a customer opens a checking account. When a
customer buys an item using a debit card, the money is taken directly from his checking Victor will be in charge of

A credit card is a plastic payment card you can use to purchase goods or services. Using a
credit card is like getting a loan. You pay for your purchases later when you receive a
monthly bill. You also pay interest on the balance.

2. Show the students a real life debit and credit card and explain to the students what is on both
of them.

Both debit and credit cards are almost identical in their appearances except for one thing on
the front of each of them, Victor tell me what is different between the physical appearance of
these two cards? (Show Victor the two cards and have him notice that the difference is that
a debit card will say Debit in front of the card and a credit card will not have Credit nor
Debit).

3. To keep the students engaged, I will have home made debit and credit cards for them where
they will give me the correct card based on the given question.

Now that you know a little bit more about the differences between a debit and a credit card,
I will pass out some home made debit and credit cards and you guys will give me the correct
card depending on the given question. Also it is important to remember that these cards are
NOT what are used in real life, the real life cards are the ones I showed you at the beginning
of the lesson (show the students the real life cards).

Questions:
I have $360 in my checking account, so that is the most I can spend using this card.
Answer: Debit
I had to pay an extra $80 for this television because I didnt pay my entire bill right away.
Answer: Credit
I dont have any cash with me, so I will pay with this card.
Answer: Both

4. Now that we have finished having a little fun with my home made debit and credit cards, I
want you all to work with your partner on the Debit Cards or Credit Cards? worksheet. If
you have any questions feel free to raise your hand and I will come and help. (Monitor)

on debit and credit cards.

Extension: For extension, the students will be given a review sheet (You are a Real Card!) with a
more specific definition of the differences between a debit and credit card and will be asked to
identify which statement describes which card and explain why. This will help the students
understand how credit and debit cards are different in multiple ways.

history and not a bad one! Hint: If you have a bad one you can be limited to buying this you may
want.
Praise: Today you worked very hard, I really appreciate that you all did not fight over the real life
