Background of

The school I spent my BA2
placement was a large
sized primary school in an
inner-city setting. The
school had a higher than
national average
percentage of pupils who
spoke English as an
additional language (EAL)
and a lower than average
percentage of pupils who
had special educational
needs (SEN).
Within the class I taught,
82% of pupils had EAL. Out
of these pupils, all were

fluent speakers of English,
One child had Selective
Mutism (SM) who
communicated through the
use of visual aids and facial
expressions. Out of the 28
pupils, 25% had SEN, with
7% of pupils having severe
learning difficulties. One of
the pupils with severe
learning difficulties had a 1:1
teaching assistant.
As part of the school's policy,
all classes were set asmixed
ability. Therefore in the class
that I taught in there were a
wide range of different
abilities.

At the school that I
conduced my BA2 SBT
placement, pupils and staff
had access to a computing
suite. The room contained
20 computers and a
interactive board.
In addition to this, there
were 30 tablets designated
to Lower KS2 and 60
tablets designated to
Upper KS2. These tablets
were accessible for
teachers to use within their
lessons and for extra
curricular activities.

On the tablets, educational
apps were included on all
devices. The internet and
access to Google Drive ere
also accessible for pupils to
use.
Whilst the school was very
interested in providing
pupils with tablets and
researching new apps that
could be used to teach
pupils; they strongly
believed that technology
should only be incorporated
into lessons to enhance and
transform the learning

The school itself was
engaged in research with a
nearby university. One of
the areas of interest that
the school had was how
the use of tablets could
potentially improve the
academic performance of
lower achieving pupils,
specifically in the field of
lower achieving pupils in
English.

Lastly, the school was very
committed into ensuring
that teachers and parents
were constantly involved in
their child's progress. To
ensure good levels of
communication, the school
provided two online portals
where parents could
monitor their own child's
progress and be informed
with up to date information
in regards to the school.

Teaching of
Computing
KS2

In KS2, the teaching of
computing is incorporated
into the teaching of a topic.
The teaching of a topic is
taught 3 times per week in
lower key stage 2 (LKS2)
and between 1 and 3 times
per week in upper key
stage 2 (UKS2).
Despite the fact the school
had conducted a lot of
research into the use of
tablets and had plentiful
technology to facilitate the
teaching of computing,
many staff at the school

felt apprehensive to use a
technology in the classroom,
and therefore restricted
themselves in the variety of
ways they incorporated
technology.
In the year group I
conduced my teaching
practice, the pupils had not
yet been taught a
computing lesson. This is
partially due to there not
being sufficient computers
in the computing suite for
each pupil to have a
computer on a 1:1 basis.
