Day: 2 Introducing the Play and Finish Web Quest

CCSS Standards:

2.1.c. Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel
plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

Understandings:

Structure of the play, plot.

Shakespeares life/build on background knowledge.

Inquiry Questions:

Why is the introduction included? Why does it give us an overview of the plot of the play?

Who was Shakespeare and why do we still read him?

Evidence Outcomes:

Annotated Star Wars and Romeo and Juliet introductions.

Completed Web Quest.

List of Assessments:

Discussion about the introduction.

Learning Target: Compare and discuss the prologue of Romeo and Juliet and Star Wars: A New
Hope and determine the use of a prologue in storytelling. And to continue accessing and building
background knowledge we possess as a class about Shakespeare and his work.
Success Criteria: Each student will examine the prologues of both Romeo and Juliet and Star
Wars: A New Hope and identify the difference between the two prologues, which we will discuss
as a class. Also, each student will complete the Shakespeare Web Quest.

Time: 47 minutes

Materials:
Web Quest (Day 1)
Star Wars: A New Hope Prologue
Romeo and Juliet Prologue
Projector

Procedure:
I. Warm Up (2 minutes)
a. Root Word: mort (Latin) meaning death
II. Watch Star Wars Prologue (2:13 minutes)
III. Annotate Star Wars Prologue (3 minutes)
a. What key elements of the story does it introduce?
i. Characters
ii. Plot
b. Write a sentence explaining why Star Wars: A New Hope included a prologue.
IV. Watch Romeo and Juliet Prologue (0:31 minutes)
V. Annotate Romeo and Juliet Prologue (7 minutes)
a. Paraphrase the lines to uncover the meaning of what is being said.
b. What key elements of the story does it introduce?
i. Characters
ii. Plot
c. Write a sentence explaining the difference between this prologue and the one used
in Star Wars.
VI. Discussion (10 minutes)
a. Star Wars
i. Summarize
ii. How does the prologue from Star Wars help you understand the story
being told?
