Anorexia Nervosa
According to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and
Associated Disorders, Inc.
Is a person who is not getting enough calories in, which
leads to a significantly low body weight.

They will also show an intense fear of gaining weight or a


fear of being overweight.

A person also has a hard time recognizing the seriousness


of their current weight (AKA: They see themselves as
overweight.)
Bulimia Nervosa
According to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated
Disorders, Inc.
This is the recurrent episodes of binge eating.
An episode of binge eating includes eating an amount of food that is definitively larger than most
people would eat within a two hour time period, along with a sense of lack of control over eating
during that episode.
They try to make up for it by fasting, self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise or use of laxatives,
diuretics or other medications.
A person with Bulimia is very worried about their weight or shape.

Two types:
1. Purging Type Bulimia: involves self induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or
enemas to rid the body of food
2. Non Purging Bulimia: makes use of other methods to prevent weight gain such as fasting or
over exercising

According to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Inc.

-At least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an
eating disorder in the U.S.
-Eating disorders affect all races and ethnic groups
- In a large national study of college students, 3.5% sexual minority
women and 2.1% of sexual minority men have reported having an
eating disorder.
-In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men will suffer from a clinically
significant eating disorder at some time in their life.

Causes for Both Genders
- The effects of the thin culture in media constantly
reinforce thin people as ideal stereotypes
- Professions and careers that promote being thin
and encourage weight loss, such as modeling.
- Family and childhood traumas: childhood sexual
abuse, severe trauma
- Peer pressure among friends and co-workers to be
thin.
- Genetically predisposed: younger women with a
biological sister or mother with an eating disorder
are at a higher risk.
